Bad lighting.

Bad shadows.

Bad textures.

Teh Jaggies (this one for me).

Lack of bump mapping.

Lack of normal mapping.

Lack of bloom.

Abundance of bloom.

Lousy particle effects.

Lousy or static environments.

Blocky environments or characters.

Weak animations.

Lack of detail.

Simply lousy art.

Or something else?

I bring this up because I recently downloaded the Overlord demo, and I only got it to run smoothly by turning off normal mapping and soil cover (grass, pebbles, etc). Then I turned up AA to 8x, and it looked fantastic while running very smoothly. I couldn't stand the jags. What are your graphical peeves?

lousy art. a lot of games outside of japan seem to focus too much on making a game look technically good instead of artisically good. its nice and all, but after a while it becomes boring.

Framerates are the most important part. Doesn't matter how good a game looks, if it doesn't run well I can't stand it.

I've noticed in so many games that it looks like aink drawing scanned in for all kinds of models etc... It is very distracting. There is an uneveness somewhere or the other whereas a hand drawn game like Street Fighter was so tight and focused.

Another gripe is not enough particle effects or not enough details.

A culmination of the first four. I'm sitting here playing through the "Underground Maze" part of SSBM's Adventure Mode, and I can't help but think this game could look incredible with some of the more detailed effects we take for granted. Nothing too fancy, just a little improvement needed here and there.

Hardly, I've seen plenty of western Games recently that have wowed me with better artistic presentations than a lot of Japanese games.

Framerate, and all the new crappy shiney textures...how many bricks shine brightly in real life? Honestly, too much shine in games.

I'm not a big graphics hog despite being a PC gamer. I'm more into art style and sound design. Give me voice acting and great art (games like Saya Frontier, Metronome, etc) and I'm happy. PS, Suikoden 2 has the best OST ever.

A choppy Framerate annoys me the most, but coming in at a very close second is shiny textures. The worst offender I've seen? Perfect Dark Zero. After being blinded a good number of times when the sun reflected off of a brick, (or a character's shirt) I hope I never see it again...

What bothers me most is when a dev doesn't try. When they make a bland area and fail to decorate it or give it details. When basically not their exicution is bad but hwne their initial conespt is bad.

I think that has more to do with production values than devs "not trying".

I don't care waht they're getting paid, they should be ableto make a good ammount of detail in an area. rather than leaving square rooms as square rooms

Above all, CRAPPY ANIMATIONS. Game developers nowadays seem focused on adding more HDR and other myriad shader effects, but seem to completely overlook the fact that character animations look totally canned and robotic. For instance, while Crysis has animation that seems a bit better than most other games and is by no means horrible, it still comes off as slightly robotic for some reason. Also, ever seen a game character stand on the edge of a cliff/platform/ledge/stairway/etc., with one foot firmly planted on EMPTY SPACE? I never understood that.

Framerate, if there's one thing I just -can't- stand, it's an unstable framerate. I can live with 20 fps, as long as it stays that way constantly... A game could be 60 fps, but if it drops down noticeably below that constantly, than it just really disturbs the experience.

I think that's what developers should focus on, stable framerate, yes you might have to give up some of that eyecandy, but dammit its worth it, just look at GT4, or Forza 2, or Ninja Gaiden.... can you imagine those games without a stable framerate? Can you imagine how hard it would become if the framerate dropped all the time and you'd miss the apex or the righ timing for a block? EXACTLY my point.

framerate, definitely.

I can't STAND having the framerate slow down in Halo:CE when I play it on the 360... it's SO ANNOYING.

wonderful. it was my opinion, that was yours. i look at games like the FF series, DMC, NG, Ico, SotC, the MGS series, etc. there's something different about their presentation; they aren't as rough on the eyes compared to games like gears, halo, clancy games etc. they are technically impressive, but the character models, design etc don't appeal to me. the people in gears look like a bunch of gorillas, the people in oblivion all look like they're in their mid forties. american artists seem to aim for the biggest, masculine characters they can make. thats fine and all, but it gets old.

The only time I will feel negative about graphics are when:

1. There was obvious neglect to any thought about the visuals.

2. The game is hindered by its look.

3. When a developer promises higher graphics than it actually outputs.

Lack of decent art direction. I mean, really, is it that hard to make a game that isn't rendered in shades of feces?

Lame animations and bloom.

Lame animation because they stick out like a sore thumb and are, well, lame.

Bloom because its become such a cliche, and because it visually annoys the crap out of me. Rainbow Six: Vegas was like Hell for my eyes.

Lack of decent anti-aliasing. Jaggies all over the place can make a game look crap in many areas. Thankfully it doesn't look like it will be an issue this generation. Even Resistance on the PS3 and Sonic on the Wii have good anti-aliasing.
