I don't know about you guys, but for me there seems to be a point every console gen where everything just starts looking 'meh.' At the start of every gen, the games look so nice and sharp since we're used to the previous gen (even though the earlier games in each gen are nowhere near as goodlooking as the games released later - it's just that initial wow factor that exists due to higher specs; like the first time you played DMC1 on PS2 coming from N64). Well now I'm well passed that stage and I don't think any upcoming games will impress me. God of War III at its very best sometimes does make me stop and appreciate for a moment but that's it. I think discussion about 'console graphics kings' are a waste of time really since the difference is usually quite marginal anyway.

Anybody else at the same stage where graphics from this gen don't impress anymore? I'm not saying I can't appreciate when a game looks nice, but the wow factor has long since passed.

Shogun II and The Witcher 2 look pretty damn impressive. We've yet to see the full power of Crysis II, and Doom 4 will be a graphical powerhouse. There's still a lot to see while this gen lasts.

Graphics are nothing without good visuals. We have reached the threshold of what graphics can do. Art is going to have to carry it out from here.

And thus that certain PC game became something akin to Lord Voldemort. :P

I partly agree with this. I think there is a minimal improvement that can still be achieved graphically but its all about the visuals.

I assume you're including PC here. Honestly I'll never need games with better graphics than Crysis... if developers want to try to best it as graphics king, they're free to, but I'm perfectly content with what we have. It's a very different feeling I had from last gen, when I was excited about the possibility of upgrading (my PC/consoles).

Get a PC, it will not only open up a new library of games, but will give you that graphical "wow" factor back.

Metro 2033 Dx11 maxed out is incredible.

Even titles like ME2 will look vibrant and fresh again, not to mention modding out games like Oblivion/Fallout 3 to new impressive graphical heights.

Yeah I really want a beefed out gaming PC. It's been too long. I have a medium-low spec laptop that can handle games like CS: Source just fine but I miss PC gaming. Big time. Just to need sort out my career and then I'll get one.

And when you get to photo-realistic graphics, what then? It's the art design of a game that truly makes it special, not the absolute graphical quality. Sure a game like Crysis looks great, but it's the little details that make such a game truly stand out.

I'll agree that art style >>>> technical, but the technical aspect is part of it. Which is why so many Wii games struggle so. some of them look fantastic though Or, to put it another way: The more resources the dev has, the better looking they can make whatever art style they choose.

Unless he means recently, which is true. We reached a type of plateauin 2007, and we haven't produced better looking games since, even in 2010.

It's the typical mid console cycle graphics lull. If you want to play significantly better looking games, the PC is the only way to go. And with this gen being stretched out longer than any other, that option is only going to become more and more appealing in the next few years.

This long console cycle could actually bring a lot more people onto the PC ... consoles could take a significant hit; which could lead to PC games being good again, and not just console swag.

Was more impressed with game like DMC,Morrowind,GT3... and many more than the type of graphics we get today. Guess we are just used to them by now. Graphics really have not changed much imo. But there is a not of room for improvement, so I hope next gen delivers.

you say that now but you haven't seen ANYTHING yet. so be patient. the UNREAL 3 engine ( which we all thought was finished ) has been used the way it should have been by Ninja Theory and the game Enslaved and Bioshock Infinite. both games look amazing. also Gran Turismo 5 should be jaw dropping. and lets not forget RAGE and Gears of war 3. we haven't seen the tip of the ice berg of what the PS3 and 360 are capable of. every year some lemming or cow claims the 360 and PS3 are maxed out then BAM..here comes RAGE and Enslaved.

Yes, well, you would be in the minority. I don't even believe you saw someone play with that set-up. I've seen quad sli 480 setup's on hardware sites and they needed to link up power supply's to share the load in order to power 4 of those things. Plus they run notoriously hot. That set-up is highly impracticable to say the least.

I would agree with him that art style can have a dramatic effect making the world better/worse... but graphics play as large a part (if not more). I call shenanigans on the quad sli as well, though Crysis is starting to look dated compared to Metro 2033 dx11 etc. (though the scale of Crysis is still unrivaled)

Metro does look great, but when will games start coming out looking great and actually running on current hardware? Metro 2033 runs at an average 15 fps out doors and 30 fps indoors on my GTX 460 oc'd.

I couldn't agree more! Please, for the love of god, it's been three years and there's not one single game

that has more impressive graphics; Valve needs to get Source 3 out ASAP. I'm ready to have my mind blow

again. That and my wallet has gotten fat waiting for some game to make a system upgrade worth while. I

haven't had to touched my PC in two years and it's still maxing every game I throw at it. Napoleon, Metro 2033,

Dirt 2 all run at 45+ FPS, all games but that "one".

Here's hoping Shogun 2 can make a 2011 release date. That might just do the trick.

There's a long way to still. The day I'll be satisfied is the day when a game world can be photorealistic zooming in and out a la Google Earth and the whole game can be loaded into memory all at once with all events in the game all happening in real time. Obviously, there has to be a fast-forward just in case. But, everything is synchonized with each other.

In terms of technical graphics I'm never that impressed. I mean that's a natural progression. As hardware gets better so will the engines and their ability to churn out more. That's not very impressive, it's just predictable IMHO. I'm impressed more by developers trying new directions artistically (and having good technical graphics mixed in is nice too), and that can happen regardless of systems specs, or point in time within a generation.

Actually your wrong. There is tons of potential left with these consoles but not many companies are willing to invest in new engines. Middle ware is infested everywhere.

Look at Rage even on the consoles. Killzone 2 and 3 both are games that look better than most games out there.

Im still impressed, I still find older games impressive too though I mean:

I still think that game looks great even today. Ofcourse its the fact its hand drawn that makes it look so great, and art ****always outshines raw power in my eyes (I would rate a lot of games higher than Crysis, one of which is a GC game :P).

LMAO no it wont, untill games are being desgined grond up for pc there just gonna look like prettier versions of there console counterpart. Thats one reason why the next gen is taking so long to come out because for the average consumer to say "OH WOW" were gonna need something far more powerful then whats out now.

Well yeah, we'll have to wait for next-gen consoles for the "wow" factor again. But some of us said "wow" when we saw Resident Evil Revelations on the 3DS too.

I used to be a graphics whore, but then I realized that they didn't matter. I'm having a blast with Mario Kart Ds lately, although the graphics are sooooooooo outdated, but the gameplay makes you forget about that aspect.

Uncharted 2 and Rage impressed me and after watching Bioshock: Infiniti trailer, I'm still impressed. For me it's all about game play anyways. Tetris wasn't the best looking game, but it kept me entertained for hours. While Myst was incredibly beautiful, but I got bored with the game after 15 mins. Go figure. It's not all about graphics. Hermits seem to believe this though.
