Looking at screenshots of games like Crysis and Uncharted 2 makes me feel like we are very close to photo-realistic graphics. We can probably achieve perfect realism within the next 3 or 4 gens, but that's pretty much it. What would encourage me, as a consumer, to buy a new console afterward if graphics have already reached their limits? I think after graphics have been "maxed" developers would have to look towards more artistic and innovative means of selling their consoles. Every generation they will always have to come out with a new way of immersion to keep the consumer interested in the industry. This could be things like touch screens, motion controllers, virtual reality, etc. Eventually developers will have to be forced to make more games with a distinct style, like Red Steel 2 and Prince of Persia. So what do you guys think? Will gaming always be able to move forward in the graphics department (with the exception of moving towards a higher resolution) or will developers have to become more creative to stay in the game?

Only graphics fidelity has a limit, scale however doesn't.

So graphics don't have a limit either.

I personally dont think we willreach CGI level in the next 3-4 genslet alone photo-realism (im talking full blown pixar movie quality CGI). And regardless of that, there will always be new and creative artstyles.

I hope we continue improving at a steady pace like all previous gens.

while U2 is stunning, i don't think it is an example of near-photorealism in gaming, crysis is the much better example I want to see in like 10/20+ years time literally gigantic battles able to take place in games, like thousands of on screen objects/players/AI/activity at once I think once devs hit photorealism it will eventually just be games using it getting bigger and bigger as efficiency of making it increases

Graphics don't have a limit. You can create infinite artistic styles. Graphics are held back for the same reason innovation is: Lack of creativity.

I really want developers to stop trying to achieve SUPER AWESOME OMG GRAPHICS..and just focus on the gameplay (it also depends on the type of game).. grandtheftauto4 suffered to much because all they were trying to achieve was graphics and realism, and look how that turn out.. This is why i think the ps2 was a great console, xbox beat it in terms of power but it had the most innovative games to grace a console because developers tried new things to make up for it for lacking in power... just the way i see the world

I don't care if the graphics are the best. I like innovation and techinques more, which do well to contribute to the feel of gameplay.

Examples: Euphoria engine, characters full body animation in Uncharted 1/2

Actually it is. At least in the videogame industry. We game for fun (at least I do) and everything you play doesn't have to be innovative for it to be fun. People throw that term out there far more than it's necessary. If you only want to play innovative games, you'll only play a handfull of games probably in your entire lifetime.

Innovation?

I think that they should try and put some imagination and creativity back into the games. Something that has been direly missing this entire gen.

Best ideas this gen have included "Oi, lets make an rpg but with a shooter twist" and "Oi, lets make an adventure game but with a shooter twist" etc etc.

Most of the highly rated reviews go along these lines:

"SP campaign is about the same length of time it takes you to fetch your mail, there's a story in the same way you could probably make a story out of your monthly visit to your parents (yes, that means it's not interesting) and once again it's a shooter. All of this is however offset by the fact that there's MP where you get neverending replayability doing the same thing over and over. 10/10".

Sequels in their 11'th itteration will still be feel like the same damn thing, no matter how much I flail and waggle my wand in front of my Emotisense HD Ultraslim Feelgood Luvbox version DEATHXXXXXXXXXX 6.9 Ultra.

and please for the love of all that is evil, take a bloody break from the shooters!
