Admit it, every single gamer here have met at least a dozen of the biggest graphics whores out there. Whats more interesting is that there are tons and tons of them out there in the industry, and most of them arent sitting in front of the TV playing games like the rest of us, they are designing games.

I want to dedicate this thread to all the graphics whores around the world who has brougt us some of the most gorgeous games

Ode to a gfx whore

----------------------

Oh, whore, what a name that is

your desire to attract has brought us all to wonderous places

for this I thank you

your shiny beady eyes with its shameless attention for texture overlay

your down to earth desire to masquerade pixels on the big screen

it is you who will give us the gift of Killzone 2

it is you who gave us GeOW2, uncharted, MGS4

theres a long list of things I want to thank you for

but in the spirit of keeping it short

I'll thank for you for being yourself

just a plain old graphics whore

--------------------------------------

Rofl, honestly, without them all of our games will look alot crappier.

Think about the creators of the Unreal Engine, it sacrifice Open Worldness for a close environment to fit more textures/physics quality. They're forgoing ambitious game design to compromise for vastly superior looks and feel.

Just compare the quality of the Oblivion engine to something like GeOW engine. People should admit, that even with the limited functionalities of the unreal engine, we'd rather have that over an Oblivion engine anyday.

Games that's all about gameplay and pays little attention to graphics quality ultimately fail. Its Ying and Yang, Starsky and Hutch, Jordan and Pipin.

I wouldn't call soemone who wants their game to look good and play good to a graphics whore. I would call someone willing to have a game that has horrible gameplay so they can have pretty graphics a whore.

Right, Im thinking about people who spend months modding Oblivion to just make it look better. Or the creator of Unreal Engine 3 that sacrifice Open World-ness for frame rate and texture quality. Thats mine definition.

Hmm..true, a graphics whore could be that, but, let's face it, graphics do attract your view at the begininng. For example, Gears gameplay is way better than its graphics, but it's because of its graphics that we gave it "a chance"

Kind of like LBP.

whats the first thing you look at when you start a game?

its not called VIDEO game for nothing...all about looks.

Same goes for gameplay, but don't forget a great presentation adds to that immersion and overall gameplay..sometimes.

on the other side of the coin, i'd like to appreciate the performance programmers who opt for smoother framerate and gameplay rather than shinier textures

without you, a game might be like watching the old nickelodeon

sometimes the 'video' factor needs to be sacrificed for the sake of the 'game' factor, which is really what you're doing with the game, interacting.. not watching a video

this is like saying, let's appreciate the illustrators who draw covers for books

yes, its funny for the converse too. Because even though my comp is about a thousand dollars away from running Crysis, I do appreciate the game for setting standards for next generation games.

At some point gamers realize the biggest trend with devs. One dev release an impossible to run game that looks amazing. Upon realizing that looks alone cant sell, that dev follows to optimize it a little better so its available to more people. Then every other dev shoot for the half way point until next gen when the bar is raised.Â
