What are graphics? To what degree are they important? Are they immersive or just a gimmick? Are physics, framerates, and load times all part of "graphical power"?

Does "graphical power" simply pertain to resolution, poly count, lighting effects, and texture-maps?

Does the "graphical power" of a game have correlation to the stylish, fashionable, or cute imagery?

Like many aspects of gaming, graphics can be subjective and significant. But can "poor" graphics ruin a game? Can "amazing" graphics make a game better? As long as artwork from both an intrinsic and technical view is given a fair critique, graphics will always be a major focus in the industry.

From 8bit to HD, our plasticity allows us to create better and more vibrant looking visuals than each game before it. Graphics are important, and furthermore, the graphics of any platform can be great.

"But can "poor" graphics ruin a game? Can "amazing" graphics make a game better?" Answer: No. (realistic)Graphics are overrated, and are the most irrelevant aspect to a video game.

An art-style (Okami, Wind Waker, Jet Set, World of Warcraft) is much more important than making something as "real" as possible.

2D vs. 3D is as much of a design issue as it is a graphical one.

i say the art style,no matter how many polygons you put in a game,it's going to look bland without some artistic touches, like the art style in gears of war which kinda resembles london.

Artstyle is more important to me. I'm glad the game with the most impressive technical graphics(Geow), also has amazing art-direction.(I love the environments, very inspiring stuff)

It depends.

To me poor graphics can ruin a game for me. If I'm njoying a game, I want it to look at least somewhat nice.

On the other side, Graphics doesn't always make up for poor gameplay either.

However, in my mind, if a game has INCREDIBLE graphics, doesn't that kind of assume the gameplay will already be good? If any company has enough money to make graphics inredible, they probbly are good enough to make the game not suck.

I choose "Other".

It's good where it fits.  Gears of War needed the realistic graphics so that it could be taken seriously.

Okami's art style really helped it, though, because it fit.

It depends on the type of game and how it's used.

To me graphics is only a part of the atmosphere. I want to feel good because of the graphics, and have it create an atmosphere together with other elements. That's also why I really liked Oblivion graphics better than Gears graphics. Coming out of the sewers says it all...

Technical and artistic style should go hand in hand. sadly they don't most of the time. either you have a super realistic game pushing graphics pretty damn far; which for most games like this have such a bland appeal to me, i stop playing the games a few weeks/months after i buy it. on the other hand you get artistically beautiful games that usually go unappreciated & become underground hits because they don't fall in line with category 1.

I totally agree. When I read your post I thought about the graphics in Metal Gear Solid 2 and how the limits of the PS2 inspired the gritty yet futuristic look. Another good example I would say is Zone of the Enders 2. Beautiful stuff man.

Art > Graphics.:P

Kev_Unreal

I agree and disagree, lemme explain 8)

As an artist myself (I inked at Marvel for a few years) I have to agree that Art comes before Graphics - however, there is a technicality that exists in gaming and not in painting or drawing. Graphics must have Art and Design as their foundation in order to become beautiful - and to remain beautiful, they have to work technically.

That is actually a pic of Metroid Zero Mission - but yeah man, they really need to re-release Super Metroid or bring it to Virtual Console. Super Metroid really pushed the edge with sidescroller adventures - using Save Points, Maps, Equip Menu, etc.

Super Metroid is to sci-fi what Castlevania Symphony of the Night is to fantasy.

Absolutely agree with you - it's crazy how in Half-life, because of the physics capabilities, you could shoot a stack of barrels or boxes and watch them tumble downward into water and move with such grace, it was beautiful.

The reason I chose half-life is mainly because of the moment, walking out of the train station and looking up at the Citadel. That was beautiful and epic. But I agree with you, the physics made the game a lot more realistic, with th crates a breaking and the saws a flying into headcrab covered peoplesd faces. Yup that is art. :) Thanks for the compliment dude. :D Appreciated

To me I prefer a unique Artstyle over a realistic looking game because I don't want to see realistic stuff in my games because I see realistic stuff everyday when I'm not playing a game, and I play games to excape realism, and see stuff I wouldn't see in Real Life.

I personally thought that Twilight Princess also had a distinct art style as well. It may not be as colorful as the WW's art style....but it kinda blended cartoony with realistic. Surrealistic is what I think it's called.

It really depends on the subject matter for me. For a game like Wind Waker, the cell shaded graphics work well. However, in a game that thrives on realistic combat, I think cell shaded graphics would have made GeoW a lot less than it is.

For someone who believes that realistic graphics don't make a difference, I suggest you play GeoW. It definitly affected the way I viewed the game.
