Can video game graphics now be considered photorealistic enough to put games in the category of movies?

i use the term photorealistic loosely

You can make movies out of them. (Machinima) But we still don't have a game that looks up to par to CGI (Not even Toy Story)

well lack of anti-aliasing was the norm last gen. Now present gen games must have AA or it will get thrashed.

pre-baked shadows, cheap bloom lightinglast gen. Now dynamic lightingis the big talk

pre-rendered animations last gen compared to motion capture this gen

Bullshot, not to mention the grass, flat textures, and crappy shadows. Ratchet is probably the closest we have gotten to a Pixar movie, but no way is it getting to that quality this gen. Even if it was on PC.

Not even close to a CGI film. And TC all your links go to the same vid.

well lack of anti-aliasing was the norm last gen. Now present gen games must have AA or it will get thrashed. PC games had AA last gen

pre-baked shadows, cheap bloom lightinglast gen. Now dynamic lightingis the big talk. Prebaked lighting is the closest we can get to CGI level of lighting as of now, allowing for much higher fidelity and accuracy than dynamic, dynamic lighting still an epic failure for shadows as of now. the only good feature of dynamic lighting is.. well the lights can move.

pre-rendered animations last gen compared to motion capture this gen ..... im not even sure where to start with this statement. Do you understand how animations and motion capture work? But ignoring the huge wtf with that statement i will focus on motion capture.. There was plenty of motion capture last gen and still a good deal of key-frame this gen. The main good advancement in animations this gen has been inverse kinetic systems and animatnioin warping becoming more mainstream. But again games like Half life 2 had these last gen.

The Deathwing's Fire and smoke alone took 40GB per frame at 30fps per second to RENDER. The DATA per frame.

About 1 TB per second!!!

A whole game is like 20 GB at most...and that's everything....

On the side note, Deathwing cinematic probably contains more details and realism than two The Old Republic Trailers combined.

Blizzard' CG is always ahead when it comes to GRAPHICS and animation.

And Hey, they don't use motion capture.

Its not even funny how far away we are from movies. As a movie director, the cinematic quality and pacing is a different form of media. Games are games,

and movies are movies. But talking from a technical standpoint, ray traced shadows and ray tracing as a whole takes hours of rendering on 1 frame alone. Games use graphics engines that tend to look good on but in reality up close you have low resolution textures and polygon models far behind of that one of a movie. Or bitmap images as skies or background. Games are like girls with make up. and movies are the girls that look good without make up

To answer the question, they've come a long way in a short time. Sure, they aren't on par with the latest movies. But they have made enormous strides in the last decade.

Couldnt of said it better myself. It will be a long time until games can catch up to what movies are now just speaking in technical terms.

You used the wrong example clips for this type of topic. Stick with PC games and you're a step closer.
