Just care to naming games of the top of my head that were epic when they came out on PC and now have been dumbed down in more than one way on consoles.

Crysis (possibly if the open world is removed and mod support)

Call of Duty

Battlefield (BC2 was a good game but compared to Bf2 its mediocre)

Supreme Commander

Command and Conquer

Anyone got any more games?

Developers attempt to make a game that appeals to both crowds, but instead end up with a game that is just plain average. It doesn't have the technical edge of a PC exclusive and it doesn't have the casual edge of a console game.

Most of the great FPS franchises from earlier in the decade have disappeared after failing to convert to consoles. Call of Duty is the only franchise which has really made the transition well.

Definitely Bethesda. They seemed to miss an incredibly important factor when it comes to Fallout, and post apocolyptic games in general: ATMOSPHERE. Instead, Fallout 3 resulted in an over patriotic, hollywoodised embaressment to the Fallout name.

Deus Ex

Unreal tournament

Rainbow Six

Call of duty (well this one really wasn't console fault but whatever)

Freelancer

Those are what I can remember.

Now consolities are gonna run in here and talk about the sales the sales but that isn't why the stuff gets dumbed down. It gets dumbed down because that what console devs think the console audience wants and when they see the sales figures they assume that's what they really want.

EDITED for clarity.

The setting was incredibly dull looking for a post-apocalyptic world. Luckily there are mods that add some grass and trees.

Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon. They didn't really die on consoles they died on Modern Consoles because I played Ghost Recon on the PS2 and it was a lot harder then it was on the 360.

I don't know why, but compared to Fallout 1 and 2, 3 just felt.... plastic. It didn't feel ravaged, or depressing. Fallout 1 and 2 were bleak, VERY bleak. Fallout 3 was a great game, but it failed to deliver where Fallout 1, 2, and Stalker did.

yeah imagine if Rockstar said prior to GTA4 that "in order to better serve the broader market, we're going to make GTA4 the same experience on the PS3, 360 and the PS2"... it would really hurt the game no-doubt

anyways, Bioware is a good example that if you're going to jump to consoles you should come up with a new IP that better serves the new platform

Chernobyl still has grass and trees...the game takes place some time after the bombs hit. It isn't unreasonable that some grass would begin to grow.

Because on consoles you'll have a lot more kids playing and they'll want that simplicity, which pushes the developers in that direction.

Yeah, an embarrassment that sold more than all of the previous games COMBINED, has the highest MC average of the series, has 5 DLC episodes, and is universely loved by all except a very miniscure minority whose opinion shouldn't be taken into factor. Yeah, TOTALLY an embarrassent.

You guys can be disapointed, but you have to admit, Bethesda must've done something good since the things I mentioned actuelly DID happen (Despite your hopes).

Still the developers choice. They made the game the way they think is best. It has nothing to with "kids", and more to do with the way they think the majority of gamers want to experience their games. Seriously many of these franchises are not even marketed to "kids", not to mention the average age of gamers is beyond the term "kid". :|

The PC version is handicapped by the limitations of the console version. If the desire for a console version didn't exist many of great PC franchises would still be around.

Call of Duty wasn't dumbed down, there was never much to it in the first place. UT was terrible on console as they had to slow it down for gamepad play which ruined it.,

DarkGamer007

More often than not, it's the controllers. For instance, IL2: Sturmovik. On the PC, it's a full-on sim with complex Engine management and everything. On the Consoles, it's a flight GAME, and you can't even do so much as control your flap settings. i.e. 'dumbed down'.

It's the controllers.

Radiation only contaminates things in the long term, it dosn't kill them outright. Arround Cheynoble there is much more wildlife now than there was before the disaster.

Because they do these things to make the titles more appealing to console gamers? Because so many different FPS franchises that began their life on PC have begun to look more and more like Halo (the archetypal console FPS)?

Most franchises that get dumbed down don't get dumbed down just because of BEING on consoles. They get simplified to reach a larger audience, which being on consoles has nothing to do with. Morrowind for the XBox wasn't "dumbed down" at all. Oblivion was simplified for sales, not consoles.

The only series I can think of where the games were ruined just by fitting them to consoles were Unreal Tournament 3 and IL2-Sturmovik. Slowing down the movement and action in UT3 just ruined the whole point of the game, and IL2-Sturmovik: Birds of Prey was just dull.

Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon weren't Dumbed down last gen on the PS2 and Xbox. Rainbow Six was even on the N64 and it wasn't dumbed down. But it was dumbed down on the Xbox 360 so it could reach a larger audience.

Key words there.

The buck stops with the developers and, to an extent, the publishers. It is not the fault of consoles for existing. If games are "dumbed down" or made simpler to cater to a different audience, that is ultimately the fault of the developers.

So, if you want to blame someone, blame the developers, not consoles.

IL2: Sturmovik

IL2: Forgotten Battles

IL2: 1946

That's it. Period. I'm on Olegs forums all the time, I know what games he makes. Birds of Prey was IL2 dumbed down for consoles, it was never released for PC. Wings of Prey is NOT an IL2 game.

Whether you like it or not, Wings of Prey is Birds of Prey under a different name. It has the same goddamned missions even. I've played both.

Splinter Cell lol.

It was great on the PC.. Was alright on the Xbox... Then it got screwed up on the GC, PS2, PS3 & Wii.

On the other hand, COD did pretty well when it went from PC to consoles. Sure the first few sucked but COD2 on 360 was awesome and so was COD4 & WAW.

Wings of Prey is NOT an OLEG MADDOX game, this is why it doesn't say IL2 in the title! Birds of Prey has IL2 in the Title but it's still not an OLEG MADDOX game, Oleg just liscened the name for $$$.

Wings of Prey is NOT part of the IL2 series. It's just a WW2 flight sim on the same engine. Like Rise of Flight is a WW1 flight game on the IL2 engine, but it's NOT IL2.

Why do people blame consoles for what developers choose to do with these franchises?

The_Game21x

Because on consoles you'll have a lot more kids playing and they'll want that simplicity, which pushes the developers in that direction.

Bingo. THe only real limitations are graphics and I guess control scheme of the mouse and keybord. Still doesint mean a gameis forced to be dumb down cause of consoles. Its the devs faughlt.

These are the IL2 games on PC: I own all of them

IL2: Sturmovik

IL2: Forgotten Battles

IL2: 1946

That's it. Period. I'm on Olegs forums all the time, I know what games he makes. Birds of Prey was IL2 dumbed down for consoles, it was never released for PC. Wings of Prey is NOT an IL2 game.

Why are you ranting and raving at me about whether BoP is an IL-2 title? I'm not arguing about that anywhere. :? The point is, Birds of Prey IS on PC, as WoP has the same freaking missions, the same freaking plane models, the same freaking sounds, the same freaking EVERYTHING that BoP has. For the love of God, they share the sameintros even. That is my argument.

[QUOTE="Silenthps"]Fallout 3. although i'd say its more bethesda's fault than consolesgmc2u_64

Definitely Bethesda. They seemed to miss an incredibly important factor when it comes to Fallout, and post apocolyptic games in general: ATMOSPHERE. Instead, Fallout 3 resulted in an over patriotic, hollywoodised embaressment to the Fallout name.

Yeah just like how people raveda bout Oblivion being one of the best RPG's of all time.. When it is one of the most shallow ones I have ever seen..
