Here at GS the latest trend from fanboys this gen has been to confuse great franchises with system seller games for their console of choice. Now this topic is not to downgrade the quality of a franchise, Im just fed up with fanboys touting games that are successful franchises(niche gaming) with collossal blockbuster hits that makes good ole great grandma stand up and take notice....

What titles do you feel are System Sellers and why?

Final Fantasy, Zelda, Pokemon, Halo. Those are the system sellers that come to mind for me.

I agree those titles tend to start a buying frenzy for the respective consoles...

And as sad as it may be I will say Madden and movie themed games always results in a typhoon worth of console sales

NG2 may own but I would put that in a great franchise category rather than a system seller. Only the select few would enjoy that genre versus hearing about the sales of Pokemon or Halo on CNN...

I have to disagree there. Madden, people can just play those games on their older consoles, and the same is generally true for movie titles. They are always released on 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, DS, and even GBA. Turtles, Spiderman, Transformers, Harry Potter. Pretty sure they all were on all systems. Madden 08 PS2 sales topped every other system combined, unless I remember incorrectly

When I reffer to a system seller Im talking about this gen only... but I do get your point. I still have to disagree cause regardless of these title being available for every system or the quality, the market always has a rush of console sales during the time of their release.

Not going to lie- when I saw the title of the thread, I assumed a, "The Halo franchise is a system seller, but it by no means is a good franchise." So, kudos for not doing that.

I dunno about that one...I will give it credit for being a great franchise but as long as I been gaming I havent heard of a nationwide demand for this title. The type where retailers are completely sold out and news venues that dont normally report gaming news is reporting the sales from this title...

To each his own, I guess

But just as you mentioned earlier, these games are available for all consoles...so why would a casual pick up the most expensive console to play a game?

GT3 was the second best selling game of last gen. (Only behind GTA:SA, and not by much)

Agreed. I'll ad MGS and GT to a certain extent. I also now think that Gears of War 2 will become a system seller for the 360.

Like I said, its a great franchise that was available to 15 mil + Sony customers and may have generated a few more supporters. But IMO the franchise doesnt have the draw to sway the non-gamer or rival system supporters to break down and buy a Playstation for the title.

I would think the majority of GeoW2 buyers would already have 360's, being fans of the first game.

I can agree that Gears emerged (no pun intended) as a great franchise, but I dont think is can draw in lil billy and grandma. It will just be a great addition to the 360 library

Well if you want to use that logic, hell a XBLA, VC, or PSN title could have the same effect to make someone buy a console. I didnt want to use Halo or GTA as a example because it breeds conflict between the Xbox and Playstation on these boards, but I see I will have to do so to prove my point.

The games I mentioned are System Sellers meaning they sparked a buying frenzy from people wanting to experience a game that is on the lips of every news reporter and magazine article. Its the latest fad, the new black of the season, the "its" thing to have in your home...

This is the type of exposure System sellers generate.

As good as they are I guess I mean they wont have the same impact of games like Halo, Mario or Zelda.

Also I think people are going to find that GoW2 will have some serious hype including press, TV, etc. Not to the level of Halo 3 but when its launched I think non gaming media will be talking a lot about it especially if the film makes it to the big screen before then.

Fair enough, I can admit when Im wrong about the franchise being notable...But next time let the person debating do the work. Also this article was imbedded in a section of CNN the average person wouldnt read. I know all media outlets have their "tech" section, but I dont recall this being on the front page on CNN during its release...I could be wrong but hey, stranger things have happened before...

System sellers and great franchises go hand in hand for me you buy consoles for certain games like Lemmings bought 360 because of the halo series (a greay franchise and system seller) Sheep bought into a wii because of SSBB (agian a SS and GF) Cows bought a ps3 because of FF and MGS4 ( I dont like them but the rateing and sales speak for themselves)

lol, how are you going to remember what the headlines were at CNN.COM on a specific day over 6 years ago?

NavigatorsGhost

Its simple its called a great memory...I have been around long enough in the gaming realm to remember the games that made such impact on the world that the average mom and pop were even talking about them, GT is not one of those franchises.

Remember the global hype around surrounding the release of SMB3?

Do you remember the news uproar about Street Fighter II or Mortal Kombat taking over the world?

If you have had the pleasure of being exposed to gaming at its finest you will no that the GT series just simply launches, makes its money, and is only popular among Playstation fans....Its is a great franchise, but not a system seller!!

halo, mario etc are fun but they are not the best you can get. We as gamers know the games that we want and how to get the most out of our system, let the n00bs find out for themselves.

They might not be the best you can get, but they sure move systems. This is a fact...there is no room for opinions here.

[QUOTE="asdasd"]Gran TurismoFatalDomain

I dunno about that one...I will give it credit for being a great franchise but as long as I been gaming I havent heard of a nationwide demand for this title. The type where retailers are completely sold out and news venues that dont normally report gaming news is reporting the sales from this title...

To each his own, I guess

Game On....

so many people bought gran turismo because there is no other great racing sim on the ps2
