What is the greatest gaming platform? What makes it the best? What is your favorite part of that system? If you want you may mention your favorite console or handheld if it not be the greatest one.

I beleive the Super NES(Super Nintendo entertainment system) is the greatest gaming platform. It seems to me, that the SNES has a Gem(amazingly great game) for each and every video-game genre(racing, action-adventure, fighting, etc.). Name any genre or type of game and SNES has a great game for that particular genre. My favorite video-game platform is the Gamecube. Although it never reached a high popularity, I think Nintendo did a phenomenall job with the Gamecube. With games like Super Smash bros. Melee, Resident Evil 4, and Metroid Prime, the Gamecube can rival any system and put up a good fight.

Please post your opinions and thanks for checking outmy thread.:)

This is actually a great answer because P.C.'s library only builds and never ends.

Great game in every genre? SNES didn't have any good First Person Shooters. :P

Seriously though, SNES was a great platform, but I don't view it as the best. I'd say launch PS3 is the greatest game machine ever, personally. I mean, PS1 + PS2 + PS3 library on one machine? Hard to compete with that.

PS2 is my choice. The selection of games is just amazing.

There is no right choice here, though.

20yrs ago I would agree, but I believe the PS2 and SNES are still the greatest, with the Genesis, very close behind. What makes them the best is I've had the most fun playing games on these platforms, then any other console that has been released. The 360 is slowly catching up though. The PC gave me a lot of gaming joy back when I was in high school and college (over 20yrs ago lol!!). I don't play PC games much these days as I'm having to much fun playing my game consoles. What makes it the best? All the incredible games. Favorite consoles: PS2, Dreamcast, Genesis, SNES, XBox 360 Gameboy/DS.

Megadrive,PS1 and PS2 so many good memories and time wasted.

Cant say the same for this gen theres been very few games that have struck me as WOW tbh :S its just bigger bugets and better graphics most of the time which is a little dissapointing :( last gen even tho its became a massive cash cow you had Guitar hero 1 and 2 appearing and to me they were a breath of fresh air.

Motion controls might have had a bigger impact on the general public but to me i just cba with it i prefer lying in my bed with a controller and a can of cola :)

Well, let's say I think the PS1 had the greatest library ever. Obviously the PS2 would be a better gaming console, since it can play the PS1 library IN ADDITION to its own library. Likewise, if the PS2 is great thanks to the PS1 and PS2 libraries, the (BC) PS3 has to be even better, since it plays those games PLUS its own.

AAllxxjjnn

What I came in here say.

It's not entirely true though, is it? If I bought a PC in 1990, that PC does not have a never ending library. I could play games on it for maybe a few years without needing to buy new hardware. Likewise, PCs are not 100% BC; buying a PC today doesn't mean I can play every PC game ever made. I have plenty of old DOS PC games that are unplayable on modern PCs. Privateer 2, for instance, when I try to play it on a newer winxp or vista PC runs way too fast (like 10x normal speed) pretty much guaranteeing you die within 5 seconds. Maybe it's possible to go in and screw with settings and hardware profiles and such to fix it, but it's not really worth it. I remember the days of having to change your settings for every game and use boot disks and all that junk. Not interested.

Anyway, the point is saying that PC is one continuous platform implies that you can buy 1 pc and play all pc games, past, present, future, and it's not the case.

Well the think is that when you buy a new PC unlike consoles you know your old games will still work one way or another ( natively or with the help of an emulation like Dosbox or with a community patch ). Sure there are few games that wont work but most of them will and that is great knowing i still play blood,Unreal and Duke Nukem 3d that i bought 10 years ago

the wii would still win by having the best games ever playable on its console, everything from Zelda OoT, SMG1 and 2 to Metroid Prime and RE4 ect.

all the best from gamerankings and metacritics

When I bought my PS3, I knew that my entire library of PlayStation games would work on it, with no need for hunting for an appropriate emulation software or patch, everything from PS1 games from 15 years ago to PS3 games from this year, next year, or 5 years from now.

Yeah but you are the minority of people that own a PS3 with BC. Sony removed BC long time ago and most people cant play their PS2 games ( imo BC on PS3 was a big plus and was considering getting a PS3 but since sony removed BC i didnt buy one ). As for hunting patches and emulators is not that hard actually. Most games work on compatibility mode while older games work with Dosbox which is easy to use. So you only need 1 piece of software. Sure there are games that need ti dig a little deeper to get them to work but imo that is one of the joys of Pc gaming. Let alone you can get older games to work at HD resolutions

I understand what you are saying, but based on PS3 GAMES ONLY, meaning ONLY GAMES THAT CAN BE ONLY PLAYED ON THE PS3, is it still the best?

I doubt anyone else thinks so

Half-Way

So you are comparing ONLY exclusives, and not total libraries? So games like Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption, Halo, Zelda: Twilight Princess, etc. don't count?

the wii would still win by having the best games ever playable on its console, everything from Zelda OoT, SMG1 and 2 to Metroid Prime and RE4 ect.

all the best from gamerankings and metacritics

quality > quantity as cows like to say

PS3 has 25 games rated over 90 on Metacritic. PS2 has 63. PS1 has 29. 117 AAA (by Metacritic).

Wii has 10. Cube has 26. N64 has 17, but only about 7 of them are available on the VC (and if you had those games originally, it's not like you could play it on the Wii without buying it again). Metacritic doesn't go back further than that, so that's a total of 43 AAA (by Metacritic).

PC. what do i love about it? 1) i get what i want instead of being told what i can have 2) its an open platforms. any company can compete with another. 3) better controls for most games 4) cheaper games (legally of course). 5) better looking games 6) better running games. 7) brilliant exclusives (thats opinion of course....but the more i dig the more gems i find on the PC). things i dont like about it 1) some DRM systems. im not anti all DRM (alpha protocol for example...nice system). but ubis system is just nonsense. of course consoles are starting to get it also (capcom have used ubis system on the PS3 already for a PSN game). no one can escape from the madness :(.

PC for a number of different reasons. Some of thos being:

  • Mods - a great addition to any game, and a plethora of good choices out there
  • Library - The library is huge, even for just this gen alone and not counting past gens
  • Performance - performance is based on hardware, therefore if I have good hardware, then I can get a silky smooth 60FPS in a lot of games, or just settle for 30FPS on intense games
  • Graphics - No need to explain this, but suffice to say resolution and other details in games is phenomenal

PS3 has 25 games rated over 90 on Metacritic. PS2 has 63 (and if you had a slim or any type of ps3 that wasent bought at launch you could not play those). Wii has 10. PS1 has 29. 117 AAA (by Metacritic).

dont be silly, you know that the argument quality > quantity can always be used as demonstrated by many gamespot users

all of the best games are playable on the wii, the top 3 of all time Zelda OoT, SMG1 and 2

see?

+ the red is a bonus just for you :)

^^^^^^ This is the only correct answer!

This is actually a great answer because P.C.'s library only builds and never ends.

This is true. I was just playing the very first Call of Duty yesterday. That game came out in 2003. I also from time to time play Half Life which released way back in 1998. Lets see you do that on any console.

The top game on Metacritic is OOT (N64), but the second highest is a threeway tie between GTA4(ps3/360), SMG2(wii), and THPS2(ps1), 2 of which can be played on any PS3. SMG1(wii) is tied with THPS3(ps2), GTA3(ps2), Halo(xbox), Metroid Prime(gc), and Perfect Dark(N64).

So, OoT, SMG, SMG2 are the highest rated of all time, if you leave out all the other games that received the same scores as SMG and SMG2. Of the top 4 (since three are tied for second place) rated games on Metacritic, 2 are playable on a Wii, and 2 are playable on a PS3. If you include third place, making it the top 10 rated games, 4 are available on Wii and 4 are available on PS3.

All PS3's can play all PS1 games from as far back as 1995, with no need to go through any hoops to make sure it works right.
