GS Flop =/= GOTY?

I was wondering what criteria GOTY is judged by. If perceptions outside of GS are used then would a flop by a GS reviewer prohibit GOTY from being awarded?

Mainly I see a lot of people dismissing Mass Effect as a contender. As someone who has played a significant portion of GOTY contenders, I would be inclined to include it on the vote card.

It might be on the vote card but I don't think it will win Game of the Year.......sigh lol

Higher scores dont equal goty. Scores are given out by one person, goty is decided by the website as a whole. I doubt most of gamespot agrees with Kevin VanOrd reviewsthis year.

You know, in all honesty, I can still see Mass Effect being a valid contender. Heck, after beating it, I can say with confidence that it's the best game I've played in years. Regardless, if I remember correctly the GOTY award has gone to a title that didn't score as well as the others nominated before. Sir_Crocidile

Well of course, reviews are written by one editor. By this logic, Tony Hawk 3 should of easily won GOTY.

I hope it's COD4. I dont' like War FPS's but COd4 blew me away. Amazing game. Would have gotten 9.5 easily if SP was longer.
