Electronic Arts has no plans for any single-player-only games from its studios, according to EA Labels president Frank Gibeau. A promotional pamphlet for upcoming conference Cloud Gaming USA had several comments from him and other gaming figures.

"I have not green lit one game to be developed as a single-player experience," Gibeau said. "Today, all of our games include online applications and digital services that make them live 24/7/365." The statement does not exclude games that are mainly single player, but makes it clear that at the very least efforts like Mass Effect 3, which had a campaign as well as online multiplayer and other social elements, are now the standard for EA.GS

Thoughts, SW?

Do you think the inclusion of MP in all games is a good direction, or do you think this will result in watered down games with shoehorned MP modes?

Some of my favorite multiplayer games have been from previously single player only franchises. ME3 and AC both have outstanding multiplayer. I had a lot of fun with both, and I still play ME3's to this day. I say bring it on! If the dev is talented enough, and the publisher is big enough to provide the support, I don't see why not.

This is terrible. Some games are solely developed for theexperience. I'm thinking of Bioshock. If we believe that multiplayer is necessary for a game then we reduce games to just...games. When i think of the "video games aren't art" argument I am drawn to disagree when I think of Bioshock. You know, some movies, music, and paintings are considered art because they have meanings beyond just what we see/hear and Bioshock had meanings beyond just fun gameplay. When you force multiplayer on games, or don't develop games because they won't have multiplayer then you are losing alot of the meaning a game might have beyond just the gameplay and graphics.

I will be fine with it if the multiplayer experience is good but it seems like a lot of games have multiplayer just tacked on for the sake of it and they turn out the but a very sub-par or horrible experience.

As long as it doesn't sacrifice content for the SP experience, sure whatever.

Same here, but tacked on multiplayer is pretty lame. When games like God of War, and Mass Effect have multiplayer, then that makes me a sad panda.

Hate it. Single player games are one of the few ways where you can really have an immersive story, and multiplayer just isn't compatible with several genres.

I wouldn't say either are necessarily tacked on. Tacked on would be if Bioware made ME a competitive multiplayer shooter or something else that wouldn't fit it's styIe. Co-Op horde mode works really well with the gameplay and fits right into the core mechanics with little to no change needed. A game with tacked on multiplayer would be something like Dead Space which, IMO, doesn't lend itself well to what Viceral did.

No, it depends on what kind of games. And it's ok as long as the SP is not watered down and last only 6 hours.

With EA's DLC policy a 6 hour game will be 4 hours, but it has a really crappy multiplayer to make up for it.

Shoving Multi-player onto every EA game is a bad decision no matter which way you look at it. Good multi-player comes from developers that truly want to develop it.

Last time I checked, consumers want goodmulti-player. Obviously, EA does not care about quality experiences, given what they are doing.

Just wondering but is there actually much money in multiplayer portions of a game which next to no one touches? :P

I rarely play MP any more... all of them feel the same (DM, TDM, CTF, etc) so I don't see the point of including MP in all of the games.

But I guess it doesn't affect me as long as SP is good.

EA are ridiculous, ever since their last CEO left they've just gone down and down and down. They refuse to release games that they can't milk the s*it out of and they said recently releasing a new IP this late in the generation is a bad move which is basically their way of saying "Who likes unnecessary sequels, here, have a ton of them!"

Most genres of games it does make sense to have multiplayer, I can't imagine any shooter, action, racing, or fighting game to not have fully functional online. But it's kind of dumb to go out of the way and put multiplayer in "every" game - even ones that are designed around 20+ hour single player experiences. In those cases just focus on making a great game and don't waste time on multiplayer that nobody needs/wants.

Multiplayer should only be included if the studio has a vision for how it should be done in their project. When you shove it down the developer's throat, you wind up with half baked efforts like Mass Effect 3's horde mode, which feel like tack-ons rather than something that should be there.

I have to wonder if they're doing this just so they can implement online passes in all of their games from now on. Either way, their permanent status on my "Do not buy" list just got a little more permanent.

Agreed,,,, lets not even get into the fact that people like me who have a huge backlog and play old games .. multiplayer games get servers shut down after 2 years ... (sometimes sooner, especially ea.) So what good is a collection. I don't ever play these stupid multiplayer bro-gamer modes to begin with. Games like Deus ex, all the old ultimas, might and magic, strategy games, baldur's gate, etc. etc... would never of been made if this was the stance or they would of but with tacked on bro-gamer mp so as to take away from the single player deptarment. It's bs!!! EA with its no new IP and no single player games , must of sipped the lemmings /bro gamer kool-aid lately :P

I do not like this. Not all games need MP, in fact the MP in most games is forgettable and just feels tacked on. Look at the FPS genre, I play COD, now why would I bother playing another FPS online? Why would I bother learing how to play it, not playing it with my friends, having to level up all over again etc.....

Most devs don't make MP good. It's just an excuse to exploit consumers with online pass crap and stupid day 1 DLC. I hope other devs don't do this.

Why does EVERYTHING have to have some kind of "social" experience put into it? When I play a singleplayer, no, I don't care what achievements my friends have in it or whatever the hell else they've done, I just play it to enjoy the singleplayer aspect. I DON'T WANT social interaction, that's what multiplayer games are for. How is this difficult to understand? I'm sick of all these Facebook-style social features that do absolutely nothing for me besides detract from the rest of the experience.

New idea: let people turn off all the social stuff should they chose to.

We're headed to an industry wide crash very soon. shooting other people online is going to get old fast. Gaming isn't as impressive as it was two generations ago.

BUT WHAT ABOUT MIRRROR'S EDGE 2 YOU *¤&%¤&¤%&-heads? Seriously I think MP is selfsustainable for the most part. What I mean is that they make so much money by adding MP that it really doesn't have to interfer with the SP-budget. Also MP has higher requirements for gameplay, so I think adding MP may lead to some franchises cleaning up their gameplay a bit. The way they enforced MP in ME3 is really not cool though.

some games actually benefit well from having a focused single player experience, tacking on MP diverts resources and makes the game feel cheap when it's half assed... that being said, I guess EA has done a much better job tacking on MP to games that don't need it than other developers
