I am sick of this.

  1. more detail in presumaly less space, how is this a bad thing?
  2. they need to learn how to use next gen hardware, if they make their greatest game first, wat about GTAV??
  3. AND CAN ANYONE LINK TO WHERE IT SAYS THAT IT IS SPECIFICALLY SMALLER THAN SAN ANDREAS? ...because all i have been able to find is that it is one city, not spcifically smaller than SA.

Summary from GTA Legends Union (it's also on Kotaku and a few other websites. Gamespot also has GTAIV details stating GTAIV is smaller than SA):

» The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream." The game is set in Liberty City in 2007, but it is bigger than the Liberty City we saw in GTA III.

» The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness... Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.

» Rockstar is giving its players more freedom, more choice, and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of GTA4's storyline is quite different to it's predecessors as it can be told in a number of different ways. You can talk to people in person, by cell phones, and there are a bunch of other ways of giving the player information... In previous GTA games you were like a slave because you had to constantly take orders from people when doing missions. There is still an element of that in Grand Theft Auto 4, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time...

» There are no planes in GTA IV because there is only one city, and Rockstar want the game to seem realistic. That means there will be no rollerblades, no unicycles, probably no jetpacks and indeed no planes. Rockstar are giving choice and variety which feels right for the character. However there will be motorbikes.

» After an initial load sequence, the game will never load again. Not even during exterior-interior transitions (and vice versa).

» Both versions of the game (Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3) will likely be identical, but the Xbox 360 version will have exclusive downloadable episodic (sizeable) content. Rockstar have now spent over 3 years developing the game, and Dan Houser compares the leap from GTA III to GTA IV, to the leap from GTA to GTA III.

» GTA IV will have multiplayer, but it's not going to be a massively multiplayer online game, says Dan Houser. They are trying to make something that is interesting, fun, progressive and which goes along nicely with the single-player game.

Don't underestimate Rockstar. Just because the map is smaller it doesn't mean the game won't be fantastic.

Of course it will be smaller, but who cares..... I didn't like driving around the countryside anyway!  And even if it is smaller, we dont know its gonna be smaller due to a lack of space on a  DVD9, it might just be a developers decision not to inlcude miles of nothingness like in San Andreas!

I find it funny that people are making fun of the PS3 based on actual FACTS... like game library or a lack there-of! and loss of exclusives!

But when they try to bash the 360 its all rumor and hear-say, nothing factual whatsoever.... how sad!  "Go play your over priced machine...... Oh... whats that??.... You have nothing to play??  Ahh.... too bad!"

Thanks xbox360, without you none of this idea and content limiting creation of games would exist.

Games have budgets and deadlines you know.  Just because the space is there doesn't mean the developers (even presumably big ones like Rockstar) have the time and money to fill all that space with compelling content.

If GTA IV is, lets say, 20% smaller land mass than San Andreas, but packs in 5x the level of detail and interactivity, is it really smaller?

That line is only referring to the "no countryside or desert". The map is definitely smaller than SA according to Rockstar.

People need to chill. SA was freakin huge and there was so much country. If they get rid of all the country for GTAIV and make the map slightly smaller then that's pretty damn good in my view.

You seem to be forgetting that this game won't have huge deserts or large forests to take up space.

i dont see how it being smaller is dvd9's fault. the main thing that takes up disk space is cgi (which gta hasnt used for ages) and voice work (which is in there but i cant see it being an awful lot more than other gta and sand box games so shouldnt prove to be a problem).

Yeah, they only showed off Los Santos originally.

However, Rockstar have confirmed GTAIV is only set in a reworked Liberty City. Unless they're lying to us now to shock us later it seems likely that GTAIV is just NY.

The majority of land mass in san andreas was useless, i'd prefer it to be smaller so they can atleast add indoor environments that ain't simply a couple of rooms. I never even finished san andreas because it was such a poorly made game compared to the two before it.

Yeah, maybe the reduced landmass will pave way for more voice over work.  There is the possibility of it being bigger if it were a ps3 exclusive, but the market isn't there to include the content of next generation design to the extra land mass.  Rockstar is still creating an excellent game, so lemmings and cows should be happy.  I just don't see too much difference at all for either side to use GTA 4 in system wars.  It's for both systems and PC maybe latter.  Do graphics matter as sheep say?  Rockstar is definitely looking at more unique animations for NPC's so it's more interactive.  If GTA 4 is top again, which is likely, prehaps sheep were wrong about graphics.

To keep all realism in play here, I have to say that I do not believe 360 is making this game smaller because of the DVD9.  I think it this way because its the first GTA on the next gen consoles.  There was a lot to do to get the game so it could release on both consoles at the same time.

Now, GTA 5 may be a different story.  It remains to be seen.

I agree.

Hopefully climbing (through the interiors) to the tops of the tallest buildings will make up for a lack of planes as well.

Most sensible people are believing that the Liberty City of GTA4 is smaller but more detailed due to the design decisions of Rockstar itself, not out of any concern for disc space. Designing the models, textures, etc. for not just the exteriors of the entire city but also the interiors of many buildings is not easy--it takes time, people, money. Plus they're basically starting from scratch (since they're no longer using the original GTA map of Liberty City but rather a new one more like the real New York City).

I've never said that ps3 was better than the 360 from a marketable point.  Technical points aren't going to drive a game's development when the marketing points will bode well for business.  Downloadable content isn't going to delay the game such as it would if Rockstar technically used all of the ps3's power.  But the ps3 and 360 should be compared with exclusives rather than multiplats which will go for the marketing points rather than technical.

Simple MS paid to have exclusive content on the system just like sony payed for a timed exclusivity of gta III and vice city. the dl content has nothing to do with blu ray. As for the statement that the game would be bigger if built from the ground up using blu ray well maybe thats true but its not being made from the ground up so we'll never know so the ifs, buts, and maybes are not really solid arguments and I'm a sony supporter.

I thought San Andreas spread itself too thinly in places - i.e. the desert and country side that was a complete waste of time. I look foward to a slightly smaller, more detailed city and I am so glad it seems (according to some) that the game is taking a more realistic approach.

I'd rather have the game world smaller and more detailed.
San Andreas was full of crap. (Too much rural areas for my liking).
For an example of small and detailed > large and bland look at the Elder Scrolls games. Look at the major difference between TESII and TESIII.

The point I am making is if it is the 360 is holding GTA from being bigger how could they fit in their own words sizeable content into the 360 game.
