I thought since i couldnt play gta4 on it's highest settings with my 8800gt that something was seriously wrong since my ps3 could play the game just fine. so i went on ahead and compared the graphics on my ps3 version to my pc version side by side on seperate hd monitors. first off its quite easy to tell that my ps3 was playing in a lower resolution than 720. even setting my pc version to 720 still looked sharper than the ps3 version. then i went on ahead and studied the veiw distance and detail distance and it turns out the ps3 has next to no distance at ALL. even when i set the settings on my pc to 0 instead of 100 i can still see things from a further distance sharper than the ps3 version! then i looked at the texter quality and the render quality. It looks like the ps3 version is running at about medium on both these settings which isnt bad.
I compared same exact spots in liberty city at the same exact time of day and the pc version if set everthing a little above low settings outdose the console versions by quite a large margin. if you happen to have both version of gta4 i encourage you to go ahead for yourself and compare the 2. you might not believe your eyes.
this could be partly why the pc version is so hardware demanding.
i did not compare the 360 version as i do not have a 360 but i can only assume that it is similar to the ps3 version.
(i also compared many other games such as bioshock, cod4, need for speed, half life 2....etc) and none of them have as big of a graphical difference as gta4 does when comparing them to consoles.
