So a little bit after Christmas, I finally decided to pick up GTA4. With a 98 metacritic average and the popularity it acheived, I was expecting huge things. I have come to the conclusion that, no matter how much I didn't care for Gears or Halo, this is the most overrated game I have ever played. Its VERY repetitive and it is very frustrating when you die in a mission. Having to both start over and know you got killed usually in a pretty cheap fasion (crash your bike anyone). Your supposed "freinds" are annoying idiots who do drugs all the time. I like Niko, and I liked Michelle. Roman and that black guy that just got out of jail are OK too. Other than that, I just don't like these guys. They kill, steal, everything, and you get involved in it just for some revenge scheme and the money. I wasn't expecting much but when everyone tells me how great a character Niko is and rivals that of Nathan Drake in terms of how likeable he is, well I would expect him to be a little less of an ass. So story: meh, its good, not great, I can't stand most of the characters. Gameplay: driving and shooting is fun, but gets old. Graphics: I don't know why but shadows practically make my character disappear. I dread the night time because I'm practically invisible.

Although I think a lot of a game's score is based off hype, I didn't think it would be this bad. GTA does a huge ammount of things with the internet cafe, the side missions and relationships you must maintain. There is A LOT in the game. HOWEVER, what good is it if the core mechanics are missing. Missions are repetitive and the story makes me want to kill the people that I don't like (I was thrilled when I got to kill Derrik!) but the game won't let me. The cops can be frustrating to run from and the stupid "sixaxis tutorial" blocks the cheats section on my phone. I'm on my way to pick up Brucie when suddenly I teleport to the airport to learn how to reload without pressing buttons. Then, when I go to my phone to quit, the game asks me if I'm sure I want to quit. That is like a slap in the face! I know it sounds like a minor complaint but you have no idea how many times this has happened to me. The jump button also throws me where my character is looking and not where I push the analogue stick. I've jumped off too many buildings screwing this up!

Its not all bad though. I am very impressed by what the game has done. Graphically, it looks great for the size of the world. I can't help but wonder why inFamous didn't look half as pretty. The cover system is good too. Being able to stick to anything in the environment is a great improvement over previous iterations. I mean, its not perfect, but it gets the job done.

The game does so much, and it does so much so well, but the game tries to be a story focused open world game, and that is its biggest problem. I know I'm one of few that didn't find the story to be "fantastic" but the repetitiveness of the gameplay and how frustrating dying was, it just wasn't fun.

I'd like to believe reviewers base their reviews on merit. However, its also based on hype, as we all know. Well, in the case of GTA, I feel like they grade the developers on how well they've done. Yes the checkpoint system is flawed and the graphics can make your character disappear in the darkness, but the the game has its own internet! Surely that counts for something!

I guess I could have made that a little shorter but my point is, base a game on what it really is. What the game tries to be. GTA does so much your always discovering new things (abandoning a car with a hooker in it and sending it into the river.) but what it tries to be primarily is an open world action game with a long and story driven plot. In that regard, it has failed. I have never felt inclined to put in the game for the story or the gameplay or even have a great time. I put it in just hoping it gets better. My freind says I'm 80% through. If that's the case I don't have a lot of hope for this title. I'll be honest, if I'm not grading the developers, the game is an 8. Thats it. The story is good, the gameplay is repetitive, the characters are annoying, and the stupid sixaxis tutorial wants to make me shoot myself in the foot! It isn't remotely perfect an I wouldn't give it a good score because of how it tries to impress us. Its not an awful game, its just not a great game either. I would think that a game with a 98% metacritic average would be a little better.

Uncharted 2 got it's perfect score because it was BETTER than the 1st game.

GTA IV didn't come up to standards to GTA San Andreas.

Fyi: That was sarcasm because of all the GTA IV and Uncharted 2 "overrated" posts I've seen on this forum.

And I agree with your first statement, but disagree with your second. While GTA IV wasn't as "bloated" as San Andreas, it was a much more enjoyable and polished experience throughout. San Andreas sucked something fierce. Awful characters and story. Vice City, IV, and III are the only 3D ones that are worth a damn.

I'd say that your doing that because you know I'm a huge Uncharted fanboy, but I didn't think I was that well know here in SW.... But if you are tell me, I like feeling good about myself. If not, how DARE you shame Uncharted! (I'm obsessed, sorry!)

EDIT: Yeah, you were sarcastic, MAN!

Very overrated. The controls outside of vehicles are horrible. It's a videogame, not a movie. If you can't make a game with good controls make a movie instead. I think brad at giantbomb summed it up best when he said it had a great story and he enjoyed it, just not the parts where he had to play.

One thing i agree on is the sixaxis tutorial garbage shouldn't be in thephone as it ALWAYS ends up vbeing pressed during a playthrough. Annoying but not game breaking.

the game deserves a 9.0. It was really fun just messing around in the game. Omg, get all the cheats programmed into niko's phone. I don't know why Saints Row 2 didn't have saveable cheats, a major oversight imo. Anyway, like all the great GTAs, cheating turns you into a giggling imp. I was supposed to meet a contact with Roman downtown, so I summon a helicopter, we get in, fly off, then I jump out mid conversation and watch him crash into the ocean as I fall to my death. Summon boats on land and they don't appear on the curb but right in front of you, meaning you can crush pedestrians and cars, or get in a cab as a customer and annoy the cabbie to no end. The realistic graphics and physics only enhance the appeal of being a total asss. The darker and more twistedly creative you are the better

LOL It has been a while.
I do feel it's slightly overrated, but I'd give it a 9.5/10. (I think that's what I gave it in my review :P )

Didn't read what the TC posted. But yea GTA4 is overrated it wasn't worth a 10 (I've played far overrater titles though). Do I find it a bad game not at all. GTA4 is probably my favorite GTA title. I think it was worth a 8.5 or a 9/10.

I'll admit, the most fun I've had while playing is when I had my freind and my brother in the basement and we just messed around in the helicopter. We'd spawn a helicopter, fly up, hit a building, and while it flaws, put in the health cheat to fix it. Very fun, but its sad that that's the most fun I've had so far.

the saddest thing about GTA4 is that there is only one of them. Last gen there were 3 very distinct games. Now... DLC (yuck). DLC has a dark side, and this is it.There will never be a Vice City of this gen

LegatoSkyheart

Uncharted 2 got it's perfect score because it was BETTER than the 1st game.

GTA IV didn't come up to standards to GTA San Andreas.

It's ironic...I just started San Andreas on my PS2 a month ago...I STILL can't flubbing believe HOW FUN that game really was. Yes, the graphics these days just plain hurts your eyes, the controls at some point sucks...Some of the mission are acorn holes, like the driving schools and High Stakes, Low Rider (took me 11 times to complete...GRRRRRRRRRRR.........). But the mission variety, from "Wrong Side of the Tracks", to Catalina missions (oohhh, aahhh, eeesshshhh, AAHHHH....! ) to the Truth (a-holes, right wing a-holes! Hey CJ, its sad all these products are going up huh? CJ: "Uhhh....I don't feel too good!). After the hoopla died down, and I got to experience SA again, I came to the conclusion that CJ is a far more interesting character than Niko, and there WILL NEVER EVER be a crazed, stoned out, zoned out character than The Truth! GTA IV? "Hello, this is your cousain/GF/someone else who is bothering you...again!" There is nothingmore wince inducing than driving down the road, Niko and Dwayne murrmurring about how tough life is, and you get jerked out of thestory because "Piswassa Beer" commercial is on! That's GTA IV.

NOTE: I also just started on VC again....Man, the differences! I love VC also far more than GTA IV! Goes to tell how far that game has went down the tube for me!

Maybe, it certainly wasn't perfect, and it had quite a few problems, but I thought it was a very enjoyable game. An 8.5, definitely, but not a 10.

A little harsh but you can't argue with opinion. Actually don't give it points for production values. Don't rate the devs, rate the game, who cares what it achieved from a technical standpoint, it doesn't effect your enjoyment of the game. Give it a 6 or a 5 if that is what it deserves.

GTA4 would have got a good score even if there wasn't a single mission in the game though. If the game said, "here is a beautiful world with realistic, fleshy people, now go F%*K it UP!!" then that would still be an amazing gaming experience in its own right. You have to give props for the game world and the fun outside the main game. Look at prototype or web of shadows. Maybe a better main game, but those souless game worlds drag those games to a lower class than GTA4

Well it probably didnt help that you played the game nearly 2 years late. It certainly hasn't aged well, tho I still think its a fantastic game. But alot of things have happened since then. Open world game's structure have really been evolving lately too. (infamous, red faction, ac2) And so has story telling in games.(mgs 4, uc2) Both which the game was higly praised for. Its kinda like playing half life 2 four years late and saying its an overrated fps. Its just really not fair to judge when so many things have came out after it and raised the bar. But its all your opinion I guess. Still one of my favorite games this gen tho.

Funny, I found GTAIV to be my favorite game this generation. The story is the best, especially when you include the DLC stories. I still play GTAIV almost 2 years after it was released. I actually think UC2 is one of the most overrated games I've ever played.

Pretty much every game that gets a 9.5 or higher seems to be found to be overrated by a huge section of gamers this gen. Everywhere I go I see people posting that Halo 3, Uncharted 2, GTA4, MGS4, and Oblivion etc... are all overrated and not nearly as good as people/fanboys make them out to be.

I'd say out of all the really highly scored games I enjoyed MGS4 the least by far, but I'm also open-minded enough to see why others might like it so much. This is what TC doesn't seem to understand, the simple idea that just b/c you don't like the game, doesn't mean the game is flawed, it just means it's not your type of game.

You fanboygasm over uncharted 2 huh? well i loved it but I made my brother try it and he didn't care for it much at all and thought the controls were really annoying. Just goes to show how fun opinions are huh?

This is why the statement "game X is the most overrated game" sounds so silly. It's so up to opinion it's a joke. Unless you admit it's just some random opinion with no real solid argument behind it and are just arrogant enough to think we should all care so much...

I will respect your opinion.

But don't say the dlc doesn't do justice to the series!

I mean it is FUN! I've been playing gta iv for 2+ years.

I got gay tony and it is AWESOME!

but hey... If that still doesn't dazzle you... well idk. Have fun with other games.

Each has their own view

Two things TC:

1. You obviously don't like any GTA's by the sound of it, so you saying GTA4 is overrated doesn't mean much if you never liked the series to begin with.

2. You played the game recently and thought it was overrated because it wasn't this 98/100 average quality game, you should have played it when it came out 21 months ago, because a lot changes in 18 months.

[QUOTE="GunSmith1_basic"]the game deserves a 9.0. The darker and more twistedly creative you are the bettergamefan274

The TC plays in a basement, interesting.

But yes GTA IV is completely overated. Halfway through playing it I just switched to San Andreas and played that instead.

[QUOTE="falldogout"][QUOTE="gamefan274"]

LegatoSkyheart

Uncharted 2 got it's perfect score because it was BETTER than the 1st game.

GTA IV didn't come up to standards to GTA San Andreas.

It is a sequel to GTA III. The countless and mostly crappy spin offs do not count. (I loved Vice City)

I've found this to be the case as well. Imagine never having played a GTA game & IV being your first one. Yeah that would be pretty awesome indeed. But if you'd played the other 3 then not so much. What completely baffles me though is that the so-called "professional" reviewerswould have presumably played the other 3 also& realized it just wasn't up to par. Based on that, the Meta critic average it enjoys is fishy at best. It makes no sense that NOT ONE of the so-called pros pointed out the flaws & downgradesrecognized & publicly called out by fans of the series. NOT ONE. Is the game a terrible unplayable useless piece of junk??? Of course not. Did it improve upon its predecessors in any significant way?? Well, better GFX for sure. Monkeyed out & broken vehicle physics on the other hand were my mainproblem with it. Why break something that isn't broken??Decent enough game but no where NEAR what it is valued at on ratings sites. Overated?? Oh hellz yes. It really is.

Yeah, I got really bored with it after about 10 hours of gameplay. I don't plan to touch it again.

Good thing the awesome Chinatown Wars came, or I wouldn't think very highly of R*.

I agree. A while after I finished the game I turned it on again to do some side missions, and boy was I disappointed. There was'nt much. Police missions and assassin missions, yaay.

And the fact that you'll have to pay alot more money for the whole game to have the same features you had in the previous games is also ****** up. I hate DLC, because parachutes and tanks should have been in the game from the start.

The City also gets boring very fast. I remember GTA-SA where you could get tired of the city environment, but then you could leave to the woods or vegas which was awesome.

Wow Bioshock that was pretty lemming of you to say what you said about UC2. I dothink that with UC2 it was a have been here and done that before, but you have to admit it was perfected. By no way is UC2 overrated. It is a perfect 10 for graphics for sure and the rest are pretty close. If some one can name me one badanything about the game I would like to hear it. So cmonBioShock lets hear why UC2 is over rated, because I bet you will go to the ends of the earth to find some teeny weeny complaint!

Fair enough. You GET IT.. I'm still mentally blown away by the fact that this somehow was overlooked by the legions of so-called professional reviewers who absolutely GUSHED over that game giving it reviews which were clearly at odds with what the majority of the rest of the gaming comunity voiced quite publicly, & even 2 years later in this very thread. Like now this minute. The general consensus (SP?) amongst most gamers is that itwas a collosal let-down & grossly over rated. How did the so-called pro reviewers not clue in??

If GTA 4 doesnt deserve a 10 then what do all the other games that get 9's and 9.5's deserve? Bioshock is the number 2 rated game on 360 this gen. A lot more work went into GTA 4 and you get a lot more for your money with GTA4.

Tanks and parachutes could have been added by an amateur modder in a week if it was a moddable pc game. Those are simple, easy to add things that Rockstar decided to leave out.

Multiplayer on the other hand takes a lot of work, so does the much improved physics and the vastly improved ai.

Because they don't have fanboy like biases over GTA4 being a multiplatform game.

GTAIV suffered from its too long for its own good. I got bored after the bank mission finished and I had no desire to play more of it. The story was uninteresting, the gameplay was fundamentally the same and the fighting/cover mechanics were decent compared to other games on the market. I like the realism though, but not enough to keep me playing or for me to give a damn anymore.
