Wow has 8 million current subscribers at last count, this will have gone up with the expansion. The actual box sales of wow is past the 14 million mark and the expansion sold 2.4 million on the first day of sales. Those figures can stand up against any GTA game.

Box sales and revenue prove that your opinion is incorrect.
Why use box sales? If someone was a fan of the game they would subscribe to it.
Subs work just as well. Wow has 8 million subs. Do you think 8 million ps2 owners are currently playing any of the GTA games at this time? Besides box sales = one months free play anyway which is longer than most console games last due to the increasingly short SP sections. What ever way you cut it WOW has the bigger fanbase. But the arguements a bit mute anyway, the Sims destroys both when it comes to fanbase..... so I don't think it can mean all that much :/

WOW has over 8 million PAYING ($15 monthly) SUBSCRIPTION. Nobody would ever pay a monthly fee for GTA4, especially for 4 plus years.  Totally two different leagues.
Actual fanbase? WoW, because every person who still plays WoW is probably a fan as they spend 13 euros/dollars/whatever a month to play it. Not everyone who bought GTA is a fan. Especially since casuals arent the people who are a fan of a game.

Considering that every console GTA game has sold between 12 and 14 million since III, I'd say there's a pretty large fanbase present, since the same people keep buying these games. The reason people are still playing WoW and not GTA is because it is simply a longer lasting and more replayable game, not because it has a larger fanbase.
