I am going to be a lemming and say 360. But I would prefer another console around 2011 and then another playstation around 2013. I love new hardware so I don't mind short life spans. But business wise I would love to see Microsoft have a long life span and it seems they will, compared to the original xbox. I have both systems, no Wii for me, except for the one I got at birth and I play with that more than anything.

And the PS1, regardless of which system is your favourite Sony supports it's systems far longer into the "next gen" than other gaming company's.

PlayStation 3. This isn't opinion, it's fact.

Microsoft and Nintendo have stuck to a 4-5 year plan with each of their systems, while Sony stated from the beginning that they plan to support each of their consoles for 10 years, even after its successor has been released. They did it with PSone, and they're doing it with PS2 right now. Barring any sudden change-of-mind from Sony, PlayStation3 will be supported until 2016.

I didn't vote, I was unsure. I saw the wonders worked with the PS2, and saw how long it lasted, but I think that the PS3 is something different entirely.

lol ps3 owners are really convinced by sony's pr lines. lifespan is decided by market demand not sony. whichever console has the most consumer demand will have the longest lifespan. With sony's substantially larger price tag compared to other consoles and weaker library i wouldn't count on it having the longest lifespan

It'll definitely outlast the Wii. The fact that they're completely overhauling the dashboard is a sure sign that there's still plenty of life left in 360.

Microsoft will probably break from the 4-5 year schedule here, but I don't think it'll be supported an entire 10 years like Sony has promised.

Ps1: made sega tuck tale and run from the console business, crushed the n64.

Ps2: made sega tuck tale again and leave the console business for good. crushed both the xbox and the gc by more than a 120 million unit lead.

Ps3: last place, falling in demand while we're heading into a recession, weaker library than a console costing half its price. lost much the casual audience to the wii. lost sony all its profits from the ps2 generation.

Sony has no reason to back off its plan. PS3 might be off to a slow start, but when everyone (including Sony) has released a new console, and Sony's still supporting their old one, that might make that old one more attractive to financially conservative buyer. This is why PS2 has had steady sales despite three brand new shiny consoles to compete with: it's cheap, and it's still being supported.

Truthfully, I expect the PS3 to become profitable for Sony once the NEXT generation comes out.

For current generation consoles. I dunno because it's to early to till. I guess you could say 360 because it's a year older. Which would mean that it technically has the longest lifespan currently.

1- Niether company will pump out 1st/2nd party projects for 10 years on 1 console. Sony never did that. There consoles SOLD strong for 10 straight years, and 3rd parties kept making games on those systems. Look at the PS2 now. NO 1st party games. Tons of 3rd party games still. Its only being made, not supported by the parent company.

2- Playstation 3...only because i think Microsoft will continue to come out a year before.

Actually, with a global recession, I'm positively convinced that this gen will run about as long. People in 2014 will be buying their $149 Elites and 1TB PS3's complaining about the $999 price tag on the next gen consoles. :P

PS3, for the simple fact the big wigs at Sony won't admit their 'super' console isn't as great as they think it is and will support it much longer than Microsoft since the 720 will be out years before Sony gives up on the PS3

Perhaps, but Microsoft isn't pressured to just cut it off like they did last time (remember, they cut it off because it was a money sink--the 360 turns a profit now). They'll just sunset it normally and politely convince developers to jump. As long as games are made for the 360, there's no reason to cease production. Once the games stop coming (which could be 10 years, could be more, or could be less), then they can just put the console to rest with little hoopla.

Honestly, the PS3. Once the next Xbox comes out; Microsoft will probably drop 360 support a year or so after its launch (same with Nintendo). However, Sony still puts games out on its PS2 and its been 8 since it launched and thats already 2 years into the PS3's lifespan.

I would have to say Sony base on track records and when I went into this topic I thought you were asking us which console had the longest life span in gaming history. Sony seem very reasonable seeing that Microsoft loves to get head-start and Nintendo will probably follow Microsoft footstep once they launch their system. We will only know for sure when the time finally arrived.

i agree,

but no matter how we beg them to do a price drop.

they'll still be selling at a loss.

now, per se the ps3's variable cost is 30% of their selling price, that's a very HIGH contribution margin.

but considering the fact that there ARE fixed costs, administration costs and finance costs, it'll be a diff thing and it is a different thing because sony right now, is operating at a loss.

they'll probably be even lucky to get breakeven profits at this point.

now on the longest life span issue, with a LOSING profit-generating formula this gen, sony will probably be in a win or loss situation next gen, but rest assured, the ps3 will last a long time. now thats a good situation for us gamers, but an unfortunate one for sony since they will have to try, EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA harder than what they did this gen.
