shooters take the lion share, followed by RPGs, then action adventure, sports ...etc and lastly hack and slash games.

first of all i want to say that these kind of games are very few, barely 2-3 good titles per year and even less, last year i can't remember anything good excpet NGS2, this year Bayonetta, Darksiders and GOW3, in 2008 NG2 and DMC4 ....that's it !!!!!!!!!!!!

strangly these are the most exciting games to play, tons and tons of replaybility, despite being a single player experience, i guess this is the only genre that can compete wz other online and multiplayer games when it comes to replaybility.....i ,for example, had put 400 hr in NG alone, 100 hr in DMC4, 60-70 hr in NGS2 and i am still playing it till now.

now let'ssee sales, GOW is probably the most successful of them so far, many of them didn't and probably won't exceed the 1 million mark.

i am talking abt pure hack and slash games, it's just sad to see a great genre like this falling behind more overarted and overused genres.

I don't understand, you put genres and sub-genres together acting like they're the same thing.

Hack and Slash isn't a genre. I could say Space Flight Sim RPGs are the most underrared genre. If even they were, it doesn't matter, it isn't a genre.

I know, but you said "shooter" and "RPG" then you broke out into a action sub-genre next to those genres. It's just a pet peeve when people talk about genres and just throw in a random sub-genre in there without mentioning others.

Anyways, I think (real, not Diablo) Dungeon Crawlers are underrated, but Visual Novels are the most (in the west).

Adventure games are more underrated. The RPG crowd loves to talk about their "stories" ...and I just laugh considering how much the adventure genre does it a completely higher level of quality.

Im a HUGE Hack and Slash fan, but im gonna be honest:

NG2 - Disappointing

DMC4 - By far one of the biggest let downs

Dark Siders - Not bad not great either (not considered a true hack n slash but even so)

NGS2 - Excellent

Bayonetta - Unbelievable!

I hope we see NG3 & DMC5 trailers this year :D

Those are all action adventure. I can't think of another game this gen other than Dynasty Warriors that qualifies as a hack and slash title (Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Castle Crashers, Fairytale Fights maybe?).

Those are what quite a few people call Dungeon Crawlers these days (mostly by people who have never played actual Dungeon Crawlers), I personally refuse to call them that.

Hack and slash titles are really light on adventure elements and/or story. You're basically moving from point A to B killing everything in your path. At least that's how I would categorize it.

if you're refering to games like dmc, ninja gaiden, etc...then no, they're definitely not niche, but still not necessarily as mainstream as cod or halo or somethin

The problem that I have with the hack n slash genre is that when it's good, its great (see ninja gaiden, bayonetta), and when it's bad, it's horrible and boring as hell (Dynasty Warriors). And yeah, I wouldn't call it under rated, just under appreciated. In a similar vein is the beat-em-up, a genre which I personally love and treasure, stemming from days on the genesis and snes playing awesome beat-em-ups. Castle Crashers was a god send.

Just asking out of curiosity, what adventure games have had spectacular stories? The only ones I can recall are MGS, GTA, and maybe God of War. Whereas most WRPG's have fantastic stories, IMO. I haven't seen many devs do better story telling than BioWare.

I'm talking point and click adventures, think the PC genre. MGS is technically action/stealth GTA is sandbox God of War is hack n slash.

I think it is mainly due to the genre always being dominated by God of War, Devil May Cry, and Ninja Gaiden. Bayonetta has earned it's place in a top tier hack and slash but that is brand new. The only other 'good' hack and slash I think I've played is LoTR: Return on the King. That game was a blast

I love Dynasty Warriors 3 I put so many hours on that game when it came out. I havent bought any of the new games tho. The last game I bought from Koei was Samurai Warriors the first one for the PS2, I was a bit dissapointed on that one since it didn't have a lot of characters like the Dynasty Warriors games. Im looking forward to Samurai Warriors 3 for the Wii, since the trailer said it has over 30 characters.

Hack-and-slashers are different from the games you mentioned. Ninja Gaiden, God of War, and Devil May Cry are all considered action-adventure games. Hack-and-slashers are games where you just tap a button repeatedly to kill thousands of stupid enemies. See: Dynasty Warrors, Ninety Nine Nights.

Hack-n-Slashers are great. Diablo 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, the God of War series is great, and some people even say Demon's Souls is a HnS, and its been the best game of this current gen so far. Others might not, but I repect Hack-n-Slash's authoritaaaaah...

To be frank, Thats kind of what NG, Devil May Cry, Onimusha, etc are best at Specifically their combat. Action-Adventure is more zelda or dark siders. More puzzleish, same with God of War to be honest(you do as much puzzle work as you do combat) With NG, DMC, Bayonetta and the like, it's purly an action experience. It is all about the combat, and how the game is buit around the action.
