Rotten deal, especially since 2011 is supposed to be such a great year for PS3 exclusives, and now it's possible for people to steal all those games and have them sell far less than they would've normally and seriously jeopardizing Sony's future.

The 360 & Wii have been doing fine with piracy. PS3 wont go down. Jeez, this thing is being overblown.
inb4 omg teh piracy isnt same as steal1ng
Good for them. Im so sick of Sony. IF they were to win, which they won't, it would be a terrible day for anyone that owns a piece of hardware and wants to use it as he sees fit. I hope they lose hard so they don't pull this crap gain.
Sony seems to have the idea that they still own my PS3 and they need to get over it.

Well they do own their PSN...
And I really don't see what the problem is with wanting to prevent piracy.
are you advocating piracy? Or do you think people are seriously going to use this for anything other than this?Good for them. Im so sick of Sony. It's not about using hardware as one sees fit; that's not the problem. After all, it was Sony who included extra features like Other OS in the first place.
This is about releasing the root key.

Again people need to get it into their skulls that with CFW you can do a lot more than just piracy. Give it a rest already. Haven't you ever seen a jailbroke IPOD. Jeese.
Why release the goddamn tools if you were only in it to access Linux again?Locutus_Picard
I never understodd why anyone would want to put Linux on their PS3 in the first place...
Sure you can. But then other people also need to get it into their skulls that the dominant effect of these hackers' actions will be piracy.Again people need to get it into their skulls that with CFW you can do a lot more than just piracy.

I had it as a backup for my primary computer for emergencies in case my computer took a dump. I used it for checking email, checking the weather, and some work processing. It had firefox which was a hell of a lot better than the PS3's awful buggy webbrowser.

Well then it's too bad they decided to take advantage of the Other OS vulnerability so you were forced to refrain from upgrading your PS3 or give it up.

Yes and arson is a dormant effect of fire. Let's ban matches!
Some things that are morally neutral can be abused by unscrupulous people. That doesn't mean there is something wrong with having it in the first place.

Homebrew...emulators...in order to pirate SNES/NES/SEGA/N64 etc. games on. So it all leads back to poracy again. :?
Removing Linux support did nothing to stop hacking or anything at that time. It was already to late. That was just a knee jerk reaction. It accomplished nothing for Sony and only served to piss off a bunch of hackers.

doesn't stop piracy for being the main reason its jailbroken, costing developers, especially with such developmental costs, a lot $$$I wonder if Sony can have a talk with his internet ISP.

Uh, the dominant effect of matchesis fire which isn't a problem.
Arson is the not the dominant effect of the availability of matches. If the bulk of activity resulting from the availability of matches was rampant arson and cities burning down, then I'd most likely be in favor of limiting the availability of matches. Piracy is the dominant effect of hackers feeding their sense of entitlement and vanity by doing things like releasing master keys. It's a flawed analogy.Yes and arson is a dormant effect of fire. Let's ban matches!

I didn't say hacking consoles is necessarily 'wrong'. I'm of the opinion, however, that the negative ramifications of it, namely piracy, game cheaters, outweigh whatever little benefit it produces for a few select individuals.
I wonder if Sony can have a talk with his internet ISP.

Yes, but in his analogy he compared arson to piracy. Guess what? Both are crimes. Sure, CD / DVD burners can be great for backing up data you have to hard disk or making secondary copies of movies and music you purchased that you want to keep to yourself, but how often does THAT happen?

This isn't about a creative product. Geohotz did not create a product (unless his CFW isn't already out, which doesn't matter if it is). The problem is releasing the rootkey to the internet.

Another way to look at it is he essentially gave the keys to the fully loaded tank to a mentally insane person, correct?

I'd replace that analogy with driving that tank into a prison yard.

And people like you need to getthe facteven Overflow in their own CONFERENCE highlighted the fact that the main and majority byproduct of they're and other hackers exploits and activities is... SURVEY SAYS!!!!
Jailbreaking an iphone and a PS3 are two totally different aspects here. They will get punished and found guilty on some of the charges. The reason why they will be found guilty is because they had the intent to publish a master key of the unit. It not like a mod chip that is made to bypass it, they made it were you can go without. All I can say is good bye Geohot it was nice knowing you. He will never be able to touch or be in the presence of a computer too after the trial, mark my words.

I did it for media purposes. Sure, PS3 has some built in media center capabilities, but they don't match up to Linux. When my PS3 had Linux on it, I could stream any file in any format from any computer in my house. I have a FreeBSD server, an old eMac, a Windows gaming PC, and my everyday Ubuntu machine. The PS3 with Linux didn't care what operating system it was trying to stream from, and I never had to worry about file conversions. Beyond that, it worked fine for everyday web functionality. Browsing, email, instant messaging, whatever. It was definitely something I used often. If Geohotz and Overflow had restritcted who got the key then I would be there defending them, becasue it would have been a sign of high morals and ethics they claim they have but never ever keep... Too many hacker groups and reverse engineerers claim high morals, freedom of information...etc and in Overflows own words admit fully that the main and majority byroduct of what they do is piracy which does not help any industry ever and instead of backing up such high morality and ethics they release the key to the public anyways...Freedom of information when its main use is to hurt people and companies isn't a good thing.
and oddly enough when freedom of information comes down to private information of these same folks they drop such ideals quick. Which is why such groups aren't in it for the ideal of free information but rather.
1.Prove something to someone.
2.Get a job cause of their experience.
They aren't white hat in the least they are black hats all the way.
Very few people will download PS3 games. Why? The size and also the fact that bluray disks aren't readily available in regions where piracy is the highest.shakmaster13Don't have to use bluray thats the problem...
I hope sony realizes that this lawsuit thing might backfire, in the end it may only end up calling attention to the fact that the PS3 is now hackableohthemanateeyour sig makes me lol every time.
I hope I'll come to System Wars one day to find that Sony have won the legal case & have financially ruined everyone that is a member of Team FailOverFail & that other dude. I'm so sick of hackers. Why not run homebrew or install Linux on a PC? Instead they hurt the people that actually make good games through allowing piracy & hacking, just so we can play a bunch of garbage homebrew stuff on the PS3.
I wish they could just sue anyone who was found guilty of creating/using/distributing hacking tools.DudeNtheRoomAnd then what would they do? Make them reverse it?
I find it amazing that everyone are supporting the hackers in this conflict. :P
Does no one realize that these guys, while talented hackers, are obnoxious? They keep restating the fact that the tools they're releasing are 'LEGAL!!' where they know clearly that people are going to end up using it for piracy. These guys are just saying they dont support piracy as a premature anti-lawsuit measure, which they're getting nonetheless.
Yeah, it's really killed all the other consoles...Rotten deal, especially since 2011 is supposed to be such a great year for PS3 exclusives, and now it's possible for people to steal all those games and have them sell far less than they would've normally and seriously jeopardizing Sony's future.
