I definately see why alot of people love this game.... but to me it's rather boring. AI is good, graphics are good, sound is good, gameplay is solid.... but it's just NOT fun! The enemies are uninspiring, the level design isn't that great. I can't really pin point what bothers me most about it.... but I know one thing, and thats when I start to play it. I'm doing so because I want to finish the game so I feel like at least in some way I didn't waste my money.

It's just a chore to play for me. Now b4 you freak out and flame me to kingdom come! Remember this is just how I feel about the game. I know its a good game (great for some) but I guess it's style just isn't for me. Give me Halo or Bioshock any day of the week.

In short I feel like HL2 is over-rated.

i kinda agree with u, i got it for the pc and ithought it was a great game but i got the sense it was missing something. It seemed linear to me (but then again most fps are). Its hard to explainwat it was missing, wen i played it ijust thought, its not that different to other fps.Still its a great game but i wouldnt consider to be one of the best games of all times like people do. Just my opinion

I feel the same way about Halo 3 now i've reached the cortana level. The rest of the game was fun, but this level just feels like a chore to get through, and because its so long it really hinders enjoyment.

I guess sometimes certain games, or certain parts of games, just don't click with some people.

Are you comparing it to the standards of today, or the standards of when the game actually came out?

Personally, I can see why people found it boring, but I never expected it to be a high-octane, constant-action sort of shooter.
I love the game because of its design, its brilliant scripted sequences, and the general themes and artwork behind it all. It may not be the most fun game ever, but it's certainly an enjoyable experience, imo.

Half-Life 2 is possibly one of my most favorite games ever.
The story, the characters, the art, sounds, music... the technology behind the game.

I believe it is HL2 who set the standard for todays usage of advanced pshychics in a game.

HL2 is probably one of my favourate games of all time, yet ep1 was a huge disappointment for me. ep2 is a solid game, but it annoys me how halo 3 is ripped to pieces for not looking any different to halo 2 when HL2ep2 looks almost the same as HL2, and still has the same weapons, yet nobody seems to care.:?

You mean the intro, where they teach you how to walk, jump and pick stuff up?

Do you often stop playing games during the tutorial? I mean, there can't be too many games that could actually keep you awake...

Its the most innovative FPS of all time, whatever HL2 misses out on is covered in Episode one and two.

The half life episodes might be looking the same maybe because the HL episodes were ment to be a continuation of HL2, instead of a true sequel (Halo3 was supposed to be asequel to H1&2) The same weapons huh?, well why do we need new weapons? We already have a new way to kill striders, what else do we truely need? Using older weapons in a new way is funner than just throwing new weapons at someone's face.

Actually the Halo trilogy is more accurate. With 1 being outstanding and the other two being rehashes put into a different visual style and giving so much hype not a single reviewer was willing to state both games were seriously lacking in single player.

The thing I really never like about HL2 is the over use of the grav gun and the lay out of certain area's.

I'm in no rush to buy The Orange Box... I will get around to it late this year or early next year. Maybe the price will be cheaper.

That's because HL: Ep 2 is nothing more than a standalone expansion pack with improved graphics, while Halo 3 is a 3 year direct sequel, that, despite the hype, hasn't changed that much at all from it's predecessors.

I found some sections of it a bit of a chore to get through but I think it really depends on your taste. I hated the Ravenholme level but alot of other people love it. If you're not far into the game just give it a little more time. The gameplay switches up once things start to get a little repetitive and suddenly it's like a whole new game. I don't see how any Halo fan couldn't like the big outdoor skirmish sections with the Combine dropships.

I've so far found Episode 1 to be pretty uninspiring so far though. I feel like I'm just playing through it so I can get to Episode 2. Or rather so I don't spoil the story. It just feels like left over bits that were cut out of Half-Life 2. Also the fact that for most of the your forced to rely on either Alyx or the gravgun just feels like a step backwards rather than a step forwards. It's just irritating having to play through with only half the number of weapons an equipment than you had before. I've heard Episode 2 is extremely good though so there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Scurrydog

Exactly. More weapons =/= better gameplay.

As it is, Valve seems to have shifted the focus away from gunplay - I've used the gravity gun in the HL2 episodes far more than I used it in HL2.
Also, it wouldn't really make much sense if suddenly every Combine soldier, rebel fighter and ammo crate suddenly contained a new weapon type/ammo. Sure, if new weapons are tied to the plot-line (like a certain 'weapon' that we'll definitely see in episode 3), then that makes sense - but it's not like the Resistance and the Combine are suddenly going to invent...bubble shields, or laser swords, or whatever.

...having said that, I'd love to see the return of the Opposing Force weapons. They could explain their reappearance in the plot fairly easily by putting Shephard back into action.

In a way that does make sense, i was just actually trying to state how HL2 made and impact on Games like Trilogies made and Impact on Movies.... but who knows what I'm talking about, HL2 was da bomb when it came out. I played Halo 1 and beat it and didnt think much of it after that and went off and continued to have a blast on other games like Rainbow Six and Max Payne. lol, ranking games is are the fun!!!

Halo 2's single player was junk and for so many more reasons than just that you had to play as the Arbiter and because of its ending. There seemed to be very little though put into enemy placements or level layouts and the scripted sequences just felt extremely un-Halo. They pretty much fixed all those issues with Halo 3. I think if you really look at it objectively Halo 3 is a better single player game than the original Halo. Not nearly as much backtracking, the fact that the entire second half of the game isn't just a rehash of the first half alone make it better. Throw in the massively increased scale, Scarab battles, 4 player co-op, a replay modere-live all those WTF!!? moments and see the battles from a whole new perspectiveand fun tactical ways to use the equipmentand I don't see how you can honestly say that Halo 1 has a better single player.

Let's just say I wasn't hyped about Halo 1, but I made the same mistake as with Halo 2 and was perhaps overhyped about Halo 3. Here I was expecting another experience like Halo 1, but apart from the 4 player co-op (which is a blast) I really didn't get the same feeling as I did with Halo 1, but I haven't finished it yet. So my opinion may still change.

oh and I still feel that introducing the flood really killed the game.

IMO Half-Life 2 is the pinacle of brilliant narrative, atmosphere, and mysterey in an involving game.. Even if you don't like the actual single player the multiplayer has numerous mods from counterstrike Source, Day of Defeat source, and now the addition of Team Fortress 2.. In the end its one of those games that even if you don't like the single player you should sitll get it because of its overall value.. Specially with arguably one of the best mod communities out there.

I whole heartedly agree with that! I think the the developers really knew that the Flood were really one of the most un-fun parts of the game. I think they tried to cut them down alot more but they're too much an integral part of the story to ditch completley. They're not in Halo 3 all that much which is a relief but that Cortana level really s just horrible to play through. The fact that there's barely any tactics to it. Remember that in Halo 1 you were battling the Flood for almost a mojority of the game.

Granted Halo 3 doesn't give you that feeling that Halo 1 did the first time you played it. I think it would be impossible to do that now but I think the scarab battles come pretty damn close to it.

Yes, totally agree with scurrydog. halo 3 was supposed to be a sequel, whilst HLep1+2 are expansion packs. also, halo 2 and 3 had a three year gap between them, and a jump onto what was supposed to be a graphically superior console.

I loved HL2 the first time through, now I'm playing it through the 2nd time and it's a bit boring, which is a bit weird since I played the first HL through prolly 3-4 times in a much shorter time period without feeling that way. A lot of HL2's appeal is in the scripted events, variety and pacing like in the first one, but imo it doesn't quite grasp the feel of the first one, or maybe I'm just jaded. But it's definately a great game anyway, and Orange Box is worth it just for Portal and TF2 even if you don't care about HL2.

As I said earlier you guys have to stop comparing Half-Life 2 to Halo, while not including its multiplayer.. This multiplayer includes Counter Strike Source, Deathmatch, Day of defeat And/or Team Fortress 2.. Then add in the huge amount of mods that add numerosu things to the game..

[QUOTE="_Pedro_"]oh and I still feel that introducing the flood really killed the game.

Tamashii-sosaku

I whole heartedly agree with that! I think the the developers really knew that the Flood were really one of the most un-fun parts of the game. I think they tried to cut them down alot more but they're too much an integral part of the story to ditch completley. They're not in Halo 3 all that much which is a relief but that Cortana level really s just horrible to play through. The fact that there's barely any tactics to it. Remember that in Halo 1 you were battling the Flood for almost a mojority of the game.

Granted Halo 3 doesn't give you that feeling that Halo 1 did the first time you played it. I think it would be impossible to do that now but I think the scarab battles come pretty damn close to it.

yeah, Halo 1 really lost quality at the final stages of the game where things really just got way to messy. I think I may have to give Halo 3 another shot, I think I may have been to quick to judge. It certainly is a lot better than Halo 2 that's a fact.

Half-Life 2 is possibly one of my most favorite games ever.
The story, the characters, the art, sounds, music... the technology behind the game.

I believe it is HL2 who set the standard for todays usage of advanced pshychics in a game.

I'm a big fan but the music? That's one area that is weak IMO. I think it's of those great big series that just doesn't have a memorable score for it's game and no real theme song or score.

I must disagree as I love this series and highly anticipate ep.3-4-5-6-7-8-9 ect. j/k sorta :)

The story and environments are masterful and I believe with the release of O.B on consoles; Valve and the HL series will flourish and make many more $$$ off the expanded fan base H.L. must have garnered from this move.

I think the game is going to go down as a really decent game in my book, by the end. It's definitely a very good game. And I love zombies.

Whats not fun is the airboat ride up until you get the chopper turret. Pretty much the rest of the game is brilliant though.

100% agreed!

That's basically my opinion of the original Half life.

Good game, I can't deny it. But it's just boring. I've been tempted to pick up HL 2 as people have said it's completely different to the original, but i don't trust them.

Congrats now you know how I feel about Halo ... its gameplay is just a chore, its online is just a chore ... Spray + Melee, in all modes, always.

Never the less I can see why people like it, I didnt like Half-Life 2 for its gameplay , it was rather average, butt ehs tory telling and well the way it plays, how the levels are different.

Theres more to games than gameplay ... I cant believe anyone says otherwise ... if that was the case then Mass Effect/KOTOR would have flopped in an instant.

yeah, I definately see where ur coming from. I really like Halo, but I can see why some people dont like it. If you're not into the story and if the Main Char doesn't do it for ya, then ya all the tight controls & great weapons aren't gonna be enough, imo.

Try playing it solo on Heroic. Co-op is great fun but is a little too easy. Playing by yourself on heroic forces you to plan out how you go into the battles. Halo is the most fun when you stride in way over your head thinking "I'm invincible!" then you get blown to a million pieces from a million different directions. So the next time you take things a little slower and you get slaughtered once again. So the next time you think to yourself "Well I'll go over this way first and take care of this tank that's giving me hassle, there's a nice spot over there to get a good shot at it." You die again. "Oh damn there are a load of snipers covering that spot..." and so the process repeats untill you come up with an intricate, efficient battle plan. You pull it off and everything goes to plan and you feel great. That's what makes Halo fun.
