Well to be truly fair you have to compare all three games. Half Life, Half Life 2, and Half Life 2 episodes. Which the two can be considered the third game.
Halo 1, 2 and 3.
I have played all of them except episode 1 and my clear vote goes to Halo and here's why.
Half life1 was waay to easy. Even on the hardest setting I would just obliterate the A.I. Maybe I was just too good, don't know. Plus there was a lot of medicine and armor available just when you needed it. Kind of threw away the immersion factor. I never finished it maybe I will revisit it one day. It was an ok ride but not my cup of tea unfortunately.
Half Life 2 was cool but the storyline was not that developed. You say it has great storyline but that is part 1. Part 2 you were left with a cliffhanger ending just like Halo 2. Plus it got repetitive halfway across. Something I did not find enjoyable. I just got bored but that's just my tastes. I don't like puzzles as much.
Halo 1. Well the storyline rips Half Life a new one in my book. Better graphics, A.I. difficulty, cool multiplayer, and just immersive.
Halo 2 did not surpass Halo 1 in my book and was cliffhanger just like Halo. However it did some amazing technical achievement with that big walker in the city.
Halo 3 I have not played and I have not played the episodes. My vote goes to Halo because it's just better for my tastes.
To conclude both franchises appeal to different gamers more. I can go back and enjoy Half Life 1 and 2 just fine. :)
