I never really played Half life but otherwise one series stands out with its features, and that is Halo. Regardless of how you feel about the core gameplay, maybe it is your thing, maybe it's not....few series can compare features-wise. Game has tons of co-operative and competitive modes. It does large and small scale battles well, has tons of weapons variety, tons of vehicle variety many of which can be piloted co-op. It has creator tools(Forge).
In terms of longevity and overall fun factor, it's Halo for me. Maybe if I had played Half life, I could have a different opinion in terms of the campaign, but from what I know about the game it cannot compete online with Halo. So it depends what you are looking for, mostly a solo player experience or not. Few series can compare with Halo in that sense(feature-set) and a lot of it has to do with preference as well. Metroid Prime is amazing but it's a single player game, one of the best I ever played and the emphasis is on exploration. It's different than Halo for me, it does not have competitive or co-operative online which are features I like a lot in Halo. So I enjoy them for different reasons, I have a hard time comparing them.
