[QUOTE="azshorty2003"][QUOTE="jasonharris48"][QUOTE="kentlucky"]Good. Maybe they can make a shooter again that doesn't have 5 year old gameplay and level design. kentlucky
Halo? exactly what i was thinking. because i know he wasnt talking about halflife, even for a game thats almost 4 years old, the graphics and level design are still far better then most games today, especially halo.
Yes I am talking about HL, the game that shoves you down linear path after linear path, sets you against retarded AI and to make up for it it forever has scripted spawns behind you, to the side of you, above you or wherever you thought was clear when you last looked there 2 seconds ago.
I know I'm commiting the ultimate gamer sin by daring to question the almighty HL2 instead of bashing Halo so forgive me for not sticking my head in the sand like everyone else.
HL2 basically represents the epitome of the linear shooter. You're not going to do much better. The gameplay and linear level design is fairly archaic, but there are very few open-ended shooters, so that shouldn't really be held against it. Besides, there were obvious improvements in level design and and gameplay in Episode 2. The levels tended to be a lot more open, which worked really well for HL, and which I'd like to see in future installments.
When it comes to linear shooters, you simply aren't going to do better than HL2. You've got F.E.A.R., with its unparalleled corridor enemy A.I. and vicious gunplay, and Bioshock with its art design and highly immersive atmosphere, and CoD4 with its excellent action and setpieces. But even if those games do some things better than HL2, they still can't match up to it, since it does too many things too well, especially in the way of conveying pathos (which games in general have a really hard time doing). I consider linear shooters a different genre that open-ended shooters, because they concentrate almost exclusively on leading the players through paths and scripted sequences. And when it comes to that, HL2 is king.
