Yeah, I thought the whole point of the episode thing was to sell a game in episodes, since Valve was tinkering with the business model. I would bet they either stick to a similar model or tinker further since Gabe has gone on the record stating that he doesn't like the traditional sales model for video games.

Woah woah woah... I can understand criticizing Halo games for sequelitis, but Metal Gear Solid? There have only been two MGS games on the PS2, and one on the original Playstation. If you're referring to the remakes, then it's not really sequel after sequel.

I have to disagree. I hate run-and-gun FPS games like Halo... it takes nearly a whole clip to kill someone on Live and even in the campaign. It's too unrealistic to me.

As I recall, Gabe went on record saying that episodes 1-3 were basically Half life 3...

Yeah, the AI in Half-Life 2 totally sucks. Sure does. Compared to the mighty awesomeness of Halo 2, where enemies are too stupid to realize that they actually can pull plasma grenades off your body, or when your Marine buddies let you kill two more of their friends before deciding to shoot you.

Oh, and I'd rather take slightly linear paths rather than a campaign that gets old quickly with its craptastic storyline about a never-ending war with Aliens and *gasp* TWO Halo's!

No the episodes are NOT HL3.

Combined Episodes do practically make a sequal, but yes they ARE developing HL3........

Yeah, ok, fine, Half-Life 2 may not have realistic combat. But the physics are amazing compared to anything Halo has ever done, and actually makes you feel like you're in the game with its superb atmosphere.

I'm not hating on Halo or anything, but it's more of an arcadey FPS to me rather than something that requires true strategy.

The whole Eastern European City, coast ect,all seems very real and plausible, and contrasts well against the overbearing outlandish combine architecture.

And yes the HL series probably has some of the best - if not arguably the best atmosphere in an FPS. Bioshock and Stalker are up there too.

And Halo...... is a very different FPS to Half life....

HL2 basically represents the epitome of the linear shooter. You're not going to do much better. The gameplay and linear level design is fairly archaic, but there are very few open-ended shooters, so that shouldn't really be held against it. Besides, there were obvious improvements in level design and and gameplay in Episode 2. The levels tended to be a lot more open, which worked really well for HL, and which I'd like to see in future installments.

When it comes to linear shooters, you simply aren't going to do better than HL2. You've got F.E.A.R., with its unparalleled corridor enemy A.I. and vicious gunplay, and Bioshock with its art design and highly immersive atmosphere, and CoD4 with its excellent action and setpieces. But even if those games do some things better than HL2, they still can't match up to it, since it does too many things too well, especially in the way of conveying pathos (which games in general have a really hard time doing). I consider linear shooters a different genre that open-ended shooters, because they concentrate almost exclusively on leading the players through paths and scripted sequences. And when it comes to that, HL2 is king.
