In fact, its not even in my top 10 FPS list. Then again, who am I? Well for one, I've played way more than my share of FPSs and I feel I know what it takes for one to be good. The combat should be your number one focus. HL2 is incredibly lacking in that department. Very basic shooting action with a gun that can move random objects does not make for good gameplay, sorry. The one thing that HL2 does well is the fact that it can tell a story and provide the proper pacing in doing so. Thats it. In fact, I'll even go as far to say that HL2 is nothing more than a tech demo for source. The COD series has some of the best FPS combat out there, and completely blows HL2 away. Even halo(lol, I can see the hermits now), from a gameplay standpoint, pisses all over HL2. It seems people out there forget what a FPS should be, and by those very basic standards, HL2 is totally average. Don't get me wrong, its a good game, but far from the be all end all that most people claim it is. If I wanted to move ******* crates to create a path for me to walk on, I'd be playing tomb raider.

Half-Life 2 was a masterpiece and F.E.A.R. was far from boring. Both are in no way overrated, in fact, Gamespot treated both fairly and they got the score they deserve.
I love Half-Life 2 but all your gripes do have substance, I mainly like it for it's presentation, pretty much everything you said I agree with. I still love it though, 9.4 I think I gave it.

Why is it that whenever someone has a different opinion or viewpoint of a game, people flood the thread saying how wrong they are, or that they're idiots, or so and so says otherwise, etc. Believe it or not, not every single person on the face of the earth likes Half-Life. Or not every single person in the world likes Zelda, FF, Halo, etc., or will enjoy the game as much as others do. I know it's hard for you fanboys to comprehend that, but hey, that's the way it is. :P
I half way agree with you. HL2 is an excellent game, but not the best fps out there. The reason i believe HL2 is one of the best out there is because of the fact that there are so many mods. While the game itself isnt very replayable imo, the mods make it my most replayed game of all time o.o. Also, HL2 Episode 1 was very intense, and was very fast and action packed.

Are you kidding me? Vegas came out recently and a long time after HL2... you do have a strong opinion obviously but almost everyone disagrees with you.
I can understand your viewpoint. Half-Life 2's shooting action is adequate, but compared to some other shooters (yes, even Halo!), it doesn't offer a lot, beyond a few choice moments. I do think that the game does a good job of mixing up the kind of action offered, from the dark city of Ravenholm to the antlion attack on Nova Prospekt. Still, I can see that criticism.
However, Half-Life 2 more than makes up for it by being miles ahead of just about every other game on the market in story presentation and environmental atmosphere and cohesion. That's why it's one of my favorite games of this generation.
im sorry but when i played hl2 i didn't get the impression it was made to be an "intense shooter" with intense combat... maybe counterstrike.. but hl2 (and even hl) has been more about survival... infact, so many of the single player areas being scripted so great, it's much better than the wash rinse repeat cycle of the regular firstpersonsnoozefest maybe its a havik and source demo, but i was just happy i wasnt playing Yet Another Realistic Shooter Game mainly, i was more excited from the potenital i saw in the game... the ability to have puzzles in a fps added a fresh change of pace... i wish there was more you could do, but i was able to plan plenty of things in my head so atleast it has the ability to show the potenital of involving environments in shooters much more
Well, combat isn't really the main focus of HL2. It's more of a "think-shoot" game, rather than a "shoot-shoot" game, which makes it less generic.16bitkevin
Yeah, that's why I like it. Also Deus Ex is in that mold, with obvious differences of course.:P

Because Vegas is repetitive as hell whereas Half-life 2 has variety. I love Vegas but damn if I do not get tired of constantly move and clearing every room.
