i recently got the Orange Box & I cant stop playing Half-Life2- its great- the puzzles & shooting is so well executed & balanced, the vehicles are entertaining & dont feel tacked on. the graphics are great- its hard to believe this game was released in 2004! its the little things in this game that set it apart from the rest- like the gravity gun. the story in the game is good too- its been a while that i've actually followed a story & its so well done- no yawnfest of cutscenes.

im a FPS fan myself & Half-Life2 is more of a 'thinking man's shooter' & thats why I think its so Great

Congrats, you'd be even more impressed if you played it in 2004!

To many dull driving sections in Half life 2,

episode 1 sucked and was to short

Lost interest in Episode 2 when I fell into a hole and had to kill these spider things.

Not a bad series but highly over rated by most people, it really is quite dull to play now, leave it in 2004 where it belongs

Thinking mans shooter?, the puzzles were very easy, if Half life 2 taxed your brain then :?

I have to agree, Half Life 2 is still amazing to this day. Hell, even Half Life is amazing to this day. I have a lot to owe that series, since most of my favourite online shooters have branched from it someway (Natural Selection, Counter Strike, Team Fortress, Empires, Day of Defeat and hopefully Left4Dead).

When compared to other FPS games the puzzles are definetly above average. Which says more about the FPS genre than it say about HL2.

I think he means that the story in HL2 isn't really groundbreaking and compared to a lot of other genres It's kind of weak.

I wouldn't exactly refer to COD4 or the Halo series or Gears of War "run & gun" FPS games : once you've played the Painkiller series (or even checked out gameplay footages), "Run & Gun gameplay" would be insulting to those games.

I couldn't get into this game nor could the story keep me interested. After Portal, I lost interest in T.O.B. I know many people love the story but to me it was just disinteresting and some of the "puzzles" feel tacked on in an attemp to say "ooh look at teh source engine, it haz teh awesome fizikz". Vehicle sections sucked and the main character is as interesting as hard peanut butter. I gave this game one last try 1/2 hour before I traded it in but nothing. I'm happy with my new copy of Mass Effect, which has me glued to my tv about 4 hours a day.

In the way the story is told it's groundbreaking in the FPS genre, the puzzles however is not groundbreaking in any way.

No the way the story is told is groundbreaking - not just 'in the genre'. Its probably the most immersivee presentation you can have in a video game - having the player physically 'there' in every scene - as they would be in real life - be it dialouge or scripted sequnce.

The puzzles are groundbreaking in their own right. When HL2 came out it was one of the first games to do physics puzzles in such an intricate manner, and the puzzles and physics in the world in the game were relative to the gameplay and gameworld, not just 'taked on' - like when you are coursing the sand dunes infested with ant lions, and have to use the gravity gun and objects to create a safe path.
Its why HL is considered a 'thinking mans' shooter. Its not just 'run and gun' gameplay. The games forces you to think on many levels - not just the puzzles, but about the characters, setting, enemies ect.

I'm glad Valve decided to release The Orange Box or else I probably would have never experienced Half-Life 2... As the TC stated, I too loved the mix between puzzles and action, the way physics were actually used to benefit from the puzzles, gameplay, etc. is great.

Yeah, it's definitely one of the best shooters out there, period, partly because Valve didn't catch Let's Be Like Halo Syndrome. I did think the game dragged in some bits though, since some of the sections seemed a bit drawn out.
