In these times, shooter games are thoroughly popular and they're obtaining more attention than nearly all of the other genres. Within the shooter games, there is a particular genre that is prosperous - the first-person shooter genre. There are a lot of these games, but during the time when this genre is mentioned, there are two specific game series that the majority of us think of - Halo and Half-Life. Halo and Half-Life are two remarkable, gigantic symbols within this genre and masterly among gamers. But what game is the superior one? Which of these two towering game series is the one of higher quality?

Two legends...

Rise and shine, Mr. Gamer, rise and shine! You are obliged to truthfully tell us which game of these two first-person shooter giants is the most excellent one. And don't make an untruthful statement just because you have never played Halo. I have a desire to go into your brain and read your sincere rejoinders, but I'm unable to do that, so I'm going to rely on you, despite the fact that you may answer Half-Life.

Why Half-Life? Why is Half-Life one of these two?

HALF-LIFE

During the time that Half-Life was released on PC in the distant past, this timeless game thoroughly shook the gaming world, especially the first-person shooter genre. The Supreme Being of the first-person shooter peasants had finally arrived. It whipped all other first-person shooters' asses for not doing the right thing for the genre and told them, "This is the way you shall do in the future".

Accompanied by its more than 50 Game of the Year awards, Half-Life laughed its head off, abandoning all other shooters in the dust. It unquestionably is one of the most powerful and influential games this genre has ever witnessed - its experience was just plain unique!

Half-Life was tremendously prosperous, and we were all aware that the second one was soon to arrive. We were wrong, but it still came. And it rocked our world! Its complicated physics and graphics were amazing. Half-Life 2 laughed, as well, but on this occasion with more than 35 Game of the Year awards.

Half-Life had much within itself - captivating and interesting characters, an immersive plot (which it told well), a great main character (he's not vigorous, he's not a superhero), a kick-ass experience and a lot more.

Half-Life!

Why Halo? Why is Halo one of these two?

HALO

The first-person shooters on consoles shed tears of sorrow - it was merely Half-Life. On PC. And first-person shooters weren't intended to be played on consoles. Until 2001, after the attacks on America. At that time, a small game called Halo: Combat Evolved arrived. Imagine the two towers being the defence of first-person shooters on PCs - Halo was the hijacked planes! It just pulled it to pieces! Halo was the Supreme Being of the first-person shooters on consoles.

During the time that Halo: Combat Evolved was made available to the general public, it was extolled as one of the greatest and most significant games of all time. It was a triumph, and its popularity takes one to names like Halo killer. In addition, it was used in the Red vs. Blue series.

Halo: Combat Evolved is possibly the most consequential launch game for any console. Without question, Game of the Year 2001. For console first-person shooters, GoldenEye 007 was the multiplayer standard. In 2001, a game transcended it. A game that possessed tremendous music and gameplay.

For example, Halo: Combat Evolved was glorified for the balance of weapons, the drivable vehicles and the artificial intelligence of the foes. It was stuffed with splendid details. Its visuals were dazzling. Halo 2's and Halo 3's multiplayer was kick-ass and habit-forming, the audio dazzling and splendid map design . Hail to the tyrant of first-person shooters on consoles, baby!

Halo!

MONSTER SALES

Both these timeless first-person shooters are popular and flourishing. The original Half-Life sold more than eight million copies in seven years! Thus far, this giant has almost sold ten million copies! The sequel, Half-Life 2, sold 1.7 million copies in approximately two months. Up until now, Half-Life 2 has succeeded in selling more than 6.5 million copies.

During the time that Halo 2 launched, records were expected to be broken. And Halo 2 didn't fail to meet expectations - by selling 2.4 million copies in its first day in North America, this blockbuster cleared $125 million, outpacing all games and movies. No movie hammered Halo 2's 24-hour sales record, and the gaming industry had to wait three years before that record was smashed.

Attached by its 1.7 million preorders in the U.S., Master Chief was aware that he would smash records. This can be compared to Freeman's 1.7 million units sold in two months! By selling approximately 2.4 - 2.5 million units within 24 hours in the U.S., Halo 3 made a devastating 170 million dollar debut, burying Halo 2's record.

HALO IS BETTER

While Half-Life unquestionably is good, the medal should certainly go to Halo. I am more fond of its graphics and its action. In addition, it has splendid multiplayer, which makes Halo a more complete game. I also find Halo's story more epic than Half-Life's. Nevertheless, Half-Life is still a game of high quality - not all games are capable of being better than Halo.

Merely on Xbox 360...

If Master Chief and Freeman would fight in a town, in the end, this is probably the way the town would have looked.

What's your game?

I'd say Half-Life wins but I guess it just falls down to opinion.

Half-Life and Half-Life 2 did not have great plots by the way, why has it become fashionable to claim that it did? The only compelling and interesting thing was G-Man.

Here's how I see it:

Halo > Half-Life.
Halo 2 < Half-Life 2.

I never thought that the first Half-Life was anything special. However, I do think that Half-Life 2 wiped the floor with Halo 2. As for the Episode expansions, they've been decent, but nothing I would consider amazing.

Overall, I'd give the trophy to the Halo series just being easy to pick up and just play. However, I'd give the Half-Life series a trophy for really putting you into the story as a character, immersing you more.

Well Halo:CE is the better game but there are a good few years between HL1 and Halo:CE, in its time HL1 was an FPS revolution, i think it is one of the games that can be turely said to have invented the modern FPS.

Halo2 and HL2 both came out in the same year and the difference is staggering. they look and feel almost a generation apart. I still maintain that HL2 is the best shooter made to this very day (with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC a close second)

Halo 3 was just a REALLY well done Halo2 HD IMO (not really a bad thing) and HL2;EP2 is dammed close to the heights of HL2. So its hard to judge which is the 'better' series.

I know which was the most innovative, and it wasn't halo ;)

Halo = Three decent if unimpressive FPS'

Half Life = Two of the best games ever made, and two games that both were massive leaps for the FPS genre.

I think it's Half Life somehow.

Yeah, right! When people played Halo: Combat Evoved, they found it an unimpressive game, and yet, 1.5 million of them pre-ordered Halo 2 in North America before launch... They did not do it because the original game was fun and good, but because it was unimpressive.

Let's see Haze 2 sell millions within 24 hours in the U.S., then!

I prefered Half life 1 and 2 (and the episodes), they were far more enjoyable than the halo trilogy. I played the halo's tried to enjoy but couldnt see the fun in them thought they were dull and thought the ending of 3 was rubbish

True, but at the same time the story in Halo seems mediocre because of how badly it is told, all it does is have very lackluster cut-scenes and nothing more and characters are also pretty meh and undeveloped

Half-life plot is a lot simplier and less epic, but it totally immerses you into it's story, makes you care about characters more than anything Halo has ever achieved and makes every storytelling segment of the games a pure joy to play through.

Valve has raised the bar so much in interactive storytelling that Halo seems like a game from another era in comparision

The Half-Life series gives you depth and emotion to the characters. You start to feel a connection to them and you get really into it by the time your half-way in the game. You alreayd know the characters and the actions they take either are "OH NO" or "HELL YEAH". It's just much better in immersion, concept, story, gameplay, and the story will always leave you wanting more.

I really didn't like Halo that much, thought it was overrated. Pretty good gameplay, but terrible score and it got old.

I never cared for halo and the story put me to sleep. Half-life on the other hand is the ONLY FPS I have played that has great characters, story and settings. Something that is rare in a FPS game. While I missed out on half-life one (only got to play a bit of part 1) half-life 2 was just amazing thank god for the orange box. Im still dieing to play episode 3 whenever that is.

TheDefinitive, I'm not sure you ever planned to compare and contrast the two games objectively. Halo is nothing on Half Life. It's a fun game multiplayer that does vehicular combat better than most but it's no pinnacle of game design.

it is just epic and thrilling in the singhm i reckon that they are of the same "cailber". just that one is MP-focused and the other is SP-focused. i personally think halo is better because the multiplayer is *BEEP* unbeatable and it is just epic in the SP
