You have Halo3 avatar, don't be ridiculous.HL is generaly percieved as better of the two. There is a reason why HL2 beat Halo2 for FPSGOty here
The Half Life series has the Halo series beat by miles, and its rather simple why, Half Life and Half Life 2 have a great single player mode while Halo's is rather lacking in many aspects. When I sat down and played through Half Life and Half Life 2, I was completely blown away by the level Valve took everything too, each game reshaped and redefined the FPS genre, setting a new bar for story telling and the bar for graphics. Halo has a single player, but its mostly tacked on to "finish the fight" and I feel like the only worthwhile action is online with that game. Yes there was fun parts in the Halo series, however when I sit down to play the game again its not overly fun, its a run and gun, fighting wave after wave of enemy. Halo has brought nothing new to the FPS genre other than to keep regenerating health around. It set the standard and bar for console FPS games, which at the time was remarkably low but for those who think it finally got the controls right really need to take a look at the other FPS games out at the time.
A little game called Red Faction came out May 21st, 2001 for the PS2 and used the same exact control setup (left analog stick to move forward and back, strafe left and right as well as the right analog stick to look around and shoulder buttons to shoot and all that) that Halo is so heavily touted for having pioneered for consoles. Halo however definitely has a great online multiplayer, I'll give it that, and I'm on there rather often since it provides a great jump in and play setup. However if there was a Half Life 2 deathmatch for the consoles I'd be all over that and forsake Halo in a heart beat. That all however is my own personal opinion when comparing the two.
Halo does alot of things right and it does them well, however it doesn't do anything new or push the envelope the way Half Life always has. Now I'm not saying Halo is a bad series or anything, but if given the choice myself, and many other gamers would take Half Life over Halo any day since Half Life offers a more diverse experience while Halo is more of a one trick pony and that trick is multiplayer.
Also this thread needs a poll and I love how the TC has a Halo avatar and then awards Halo the winner.
That's because I think Halo is cool. And that's laughable. Halo 2 scored higher. TheDefinitivethat just shows how higher PC FPS standarts are. HL2 beat Halo2 for FPSGOty everywhere and een among halo fans you will have troubles finding people who disagreed with this choice

Would cut this childish crap out? Halo is nothing compared to Half Life. Half Life showed us whole new ways stories could be delivered ina game. It proved you dind't need cutscenes. It's incredibly immersive the way the camrae never leaves Freeman. And then in half life 2 you have ALyx Vance, probably the most realistic, likeable, well written and developed digital character in history. The gameplay is wonderfully varied with brilliant pacing. It's scary somtimes, exciting, sometimes it's even boring! It's everything. Halo is jsut **** Space marine, super soldier shooten guys bullcrap. It's story scraps teh bottom of the worthless sci fi barrel. It's single player 'action' is relentlessly repetitive and stupid. Outside of vehicles it brought nothing new or interesting or even of above average quality to gaming.that just shows how higher PC FPS standarts are. No Halo game has outsold Half-Life um really? Halo 1 sold like 5 million Halo 2 eventually hit 8 Halo 3 is allready at 8 Your telling me that Half Life is well over 9-10 million?Halo has sold 20,000,000 between all 3 games sourceNo. And Halo also sold more.

sence we are including everything apparently, the half-life mods like CS are in. therefore the top 3 selling valve RETAIL games equal 20,000,000
if you count everything halflife the toal is 31,300,000 source
even if we were only goign to count 'halflife' titled games the total is 22,100,000 2.1 million more than halo's total sales
now mind you, these halflife numbers are RETAIL ONLY they do not include steam sales, wich is expected to be much higher
in a quote from gabe saying"Is there a crisis in [PC] gaming?" asked Newell, who led the first segment of the talk. "You know, 'Piracy killed my game,' 'Console numbers are huge,' 'People don't want to play their PCs in the living room' - all these stories get written over and over again, and our view is that it's exactly the opposite. PC is where all the action is, and there's a perception problem."
he continued to say
Newell then cited DFC Intelligence data showing that, while worldwide retail PC game sales have been relatively flat since about 2001, PC online sales have continually grown - that segment has traditionally not been tracked by widely-cited firms like NPD. With Valve's own products, it expects online sales to surpass retail sales within the next three months. source
now take into account that the DD sales have been growing for years, and that valve has yet to release steam sales #s, its easy to see how halflife's sales Dwarf halo's.
There is a reason for this, as there was it HL2 got GotY over H2. and that is many people believ it is quite a bit better than Halo. this is by no means saying halo is a bad game, quite the contrary it is a very good game. but standing it up next to Half-Life is like standing a goldfish next to a whale
also: @ jg4xchamp Halflife has sold Half-Life: 9.3 million units so...there you go HL2 has sold Half-Life 2: 6.5 million units source
this is retail only, so the true numbers are quite a bit higher most likely.
Your telling me that Half Life is well over 9-10 million?jg4xchampDid you know that like, the other day, Valve was selling Half Life 1 on steam for $1. I'm pretty sure everyone bought it. I already own it and bought it again, just because I could.

Half-Life series is 100x better than Halo.Brainkiller05seconded .. in pretty much every department IMO: gameplay, level design, weapons, story, characters halo has better multiplayer, but i've never cared for that, and i'm sure that PC users are pretty satisfied with counterstrike and TF

lol whats the point of the thread if anyone who disagrees with you is either a hermit or fanboy beacause that is just further proof that his opinion outweighs everyone elses. and that he is right about yet another thing due to his clear non-bias aproeach to the comparipisonum really? half life series >>>> halo series in every possible way including sales. dont fall for the hype machine. half life sold 9m which is higher than halo that sold around 7m. half life 2 sold 6.5m through retail + 3m through steam making it a 9.5m which is again higher than halo 2 which sold 8m. and i bet half life 3 will be huge, probably the most anticipated video game ever and it achieves all these without microsoft's crazy advertising. i am debating sales because its the only thing we can debate here. half life is vastly superior.SamiRDuranDominican I agree

Halo 3 owns Half-Life 2 in sales. Did Half-Life have more than 1.7 million preorders in one country before release? No. Halo 3, despite being released years after, owns Half-Life 2 in sales. Weep is all you can do...
Half-Life 2 sold 1.7 million throughout the world in two months!

Yes, it does. Don't let Freeman drown in your tears.
Also bare in mind how much Microsoft spent on advertising the hell out of Halo 3, then look at how much Valve has to spend on advertising the Half Life series, amazing how a truly good game basically sells itself while Master Chief is reduced to ****ing himself out to anyone and everyone who will have him.
Overall numbers shows the Half Life series selling more, and that's only in retail, that doesn't include how many people bought it through Steam. I think this debate is over and if you really want to see who the winner is, open up a poll on this topic and let the people cast their votes. Or are you worried Master Chief just won't do it for everyone?

Well I will probably get killed or atleast tortured for this but...
I am a PC gamer with no console and I like Halo more
don't know why, I can't explain it, but HL just lacked something compared to Halo, I can't even tell what but it did. I still liked and enjoyed HL but I just didn't enjoy it as much as halo.
this is just my humble oppion and I completly understand that the vast majority of people here would diasagree with me.
Halo 3 had 1 million preorders in North America before it started. Cry. It still would have owned Half-Life 2 in sales.TheDefinitive
Woulda, coulda, shoulda, but it didn't. Millions spent on advertising, and a game with next to no advertising outperformed it sales wise. All you can talk about is pre-orders and short term sales, but we are well beyond that, and as it stands right now, Half Life series has sold more than the Halo series.
Once again I issue my challenge to make a thread with a poll and let the people vote on it, I can assure you Half Life will come up on top. Doesn't matter how many Mountain Dew cans Master Chief was on, nothing can save him from the might that is Half Life.

No, it didn't. Halo 3 has sold 8 - 9 million copies. Half-Life 2 hasn't. Halo 3 also made $170M day one in the U.S. Half-Life 2 didn't. Halo 3 had 1.7 < preorders in the U.S. before release. Half-Life 2 didn't. Halo 3 sold ~2.5 million units in the U.S. in 24 hours. Half-Life 2 didn't.
Conclusion: Halo 3 owned Half-Life 2 (sales).
Chief has more money than Freeman.

you are comparing half life 2 with halo 3 :SI've played Half-Life 2 and the Episodes and I consider the only Halo game I've played (the first one) to be inferior to Half-Life 2 but superior to the episodes.
I can understand what's the big deal about Half-Life, but I can't say the same for the Halo series. I dunno why, I played Combat Evolved, and I enjoyed it, but I'm still scratching my head about what about the bloody game somehow makes 5+ million fans go wild and guarantee their purchases for two more times, and if Halo 3: Recon is successful, then you can chalk that up to three.
