Not in-engine. Not cut-scene. Gameplay. Read:

"The shot was taken by our very own Sketch. He detached the camera on an early level, flew out a little, made sure nothing too revealing was in the background, and took a shot. There you have it. It's not only the game engine, it's the game. Accusations of "bullshot" were especially amusing given the utter lack of stuff in the shot. A dude, some clouds, a mountain. Not only was it not fake, it would have been the most pointless fake in the history of gaming."

So, the huge number of cows claiming it was fake, accept your ownage with dignity. That includes the one guy who adamently said Frankie's forum account was not in fact Frankie, when he claimed that it was in-game earlier, and that he was lying.

Most of the haters were in two camps; one that it was too good to be real (now owned) and the other that it was a "downgrade" to which we have:

me. but i was not a hater. the small image was to good to be true. watching the image in a larger size made me believe it could be true, cause the textures weren't all that.

I think it was mentioned that it was taken from in-game in the description tailing the pic on bungie.net...

It looks good, not impossible.

As a veru avid Halo fan/follower, I agree 100%. The E3 trailer armor doesn't look like it's descibed in the books, regardless of whether or not we think it looks better. In the books the armor is described as having a "glossy smooth sheen" that appears almost alien in nature. That flak-jacket wannabe from the E3 trailer was not authentic by my, and Bungies standards.

Does he mean that "flatter metal version" is gonna be used from now on?Or was did they just replace it just for that pic,and theyre gonna add the pretty golden armor with the high-res textures back for the retail?I prefer the purrty gold one myself.

They said earlier that they didn't like the "metallic" attempt with Halo 2, as it basically made the Cheif look bright green unless the lighting was perfect - which i'd agree with. They then said a while back that they were trying again to get a "metal" texture - and it was even there in the multiplayer beta - but again that they weren't happy with it because the texture kinda looked like sandpaper; so this is what they're going with. As Frankie said, its what the art team were happy with.

The game comes out in September. If the pic is fake, Bungie would get destroyed for it. Just look at the hoopla with Killzone 2 @ E3 2005, and that was just a demo video. I don't like Halo, but that character model does look impressive.

i agree. but the trailer was metalic. i like how it is in the screen though.

In all honesty, this is an in-game shot, NOT the same model used in the cutscenes, which is where you'll be seeing Master Chief most of the time anyway! Why exactly would they waste time in making a model that users won't even see into something insanely detailed? It'd waste resources, which are being used to render the enviroment...which we will be seeing.

I think people will appreciate the cutscenes, since they'll be able to apply different effects that they couldn't normally use in-game. DoF, different lighting techniques, ect.

Now, I'm saying all this before actually seeing the final product, but I don't think anything is disagreeable here.

Oh if thats the pic then I didn't see no cows saying it wasn't ingame rather they where saying it looks downgraded but it looks great to me, although I would of guessed it was an ingame shot.. It is downgrade from the E3 trailer though..

what's harder to render? smooth, glossy metal or the rough, almost-3D-looking-textured metal? I was calling it a downgrade, whether or not it was in-game, in-engine, or whatever. I never said it was not in-game, becuase I did not know for sure. But whatever the screen was, it does not look as good, from a graphical standpoint, to the first Halo 3 teaser. There is no ownage on me, sorry.

Completely true. This is the MC in-game. In cut scenes they can apply all kinds of nice effects which make him look sharper and more detailed. I think the E3 trailer will look identical to the chief you see in all of the in-game cutscenes, only without the sand-paper textures.

well, if you look closely to the new screens on ign, it's not far of from the new multiplayer screens (and yes, they too are an improvement from the beta)

Well obviously not everyone agrees.:P I like it though... looks like I am going to have to make a new halo 3 sig, my old one has the old style.

Lets remember the older e3 video was IN ENGINE, this is in game. In Engine cut scenes have more resources and can add many touch ups that are not possible in playable gameplay because as I said, not as many resources are available. It's nice to see the fanboys try and spin it.

it looks amazing and because it is up on bungie.net it is real.. and yes is is small and when you zoom it does look blury... but I still think that the game will hold the same graphic on a HD screen if not better...lets just hope:D

Exactly. On a technical level, it is the same exact thing, just different textures. Not textures removed, just different textures. No downgrade.

the E3 trailer was not in-game but in engine and that is diffrent. that is probley how the shots clips between missons.

Because you never see the chief in-game. You only see his hands (and legs if you look down). It'd be a pointless waste of resources to have a mega-detailed awesome master chief running around which you'll never see. Instead, they shift those resources to other things like the environments and the enemies you're fighting to make sure THEY look awesome. Then with cutscenes, THEN they pile on the effects to make MC look kick-ass.

And even then, considering you'll never see this guy while playing; dont you think that look amazing? The detail on a character you wont even see? I think it does. Just think of how awesome the elites are going to look.
