Question: If the trailer from last year was running on a game engine they plan to be using in the final build of Halo 3, why isn't the recent footage of the alpha build of the game using this engine?

Or is it? Is this running on that engine? Why aren't they able to achieve the same visual effects?

Is this from an "alpha" engine that they are going to scrap next month, when they begin using the "last year trailer" game engine?

The alpha version of a product still awaits full debugging or full implementation of all its functionality but satisfies a majority of the software requirements. It often lacks features promised in the final release but demonstrates the feasibility and basic structure of the software. As the first major stage in the release lifecycle, it is named after the Greek letter alpha, the first letter in the Greek alphabet.

This means that an alpha build of a game WILL NOT HAVE OPTIMIZED GRAPHICS. How hard is it to convey the fact that games usually don't have final effects implemented until late in the development process. In the alpha stage, they are still working out bugs and solidifying features, not hammering out the final product.

So this is running on a Halo 2 engine? Now that's a major misconception, and I've never seen that brought up before. That changes absolutely everything. I jokingly said "is it running on an upgraded Halo 2 engine?" WAS I RIGHT?

Jesus, I am just so friggin' awesome sometimes.

To clear up a misconception, I don't beleive it's a "modified Halo 2 engine". They use Halo 2 placeholders in the alpha build, but the engine isn't a different framework.

I think the only truly frightening thing about Halo 3 right now is that it's so close to release...and comparitively knocking on the doorstep of the public beta test. They'd better wrap this thing up tight. How will they implement, utilize, and tie together a completely new set of visual and technical goods in a peroid of a few months?

Good thing we didn't establish in your thread last night that the vidoc 2 is several months old, or you'd look kinda foolish right now. :|

No its the Halo 2 engine but heavily modified and new textures will be used for the MC, environments and water.

Oh, you're right! They've had at least two or three additional months to completely rework the visuals in the game! Piece o' cake.

Well the video was from 2006, and even then we don't know exactly when it was made. Then they had early 07, plus this extra month until the Beta, plus a few more months before final release.

Could you please grace me with a link? I might have missed the part where they said that the engine was actually a Halo 2 build, because I recall them saying that the textures were Halo 2 placeholders. I don't see the logic of developing Halo 3 on something other than the Halo 3 engine.

I'm fairly positive it's the same engine being used to make Halo 3. It'd be stupid to switch from one engine to another when you reach beta stage because you'd have to rewrite, add, and delete a ton of stuff to make things compatible, which will essentially put you back in alpha stage.

From what I've seen, they've got a lot of the lighting effects and physics and stuff in place already, making it mostly the bona fide Halo 3 engine. However, the textures and model are placeholders (recycled from Halo 2), just at a different LOD. They also haven't implemented the stuff like decorators and others.

I swear, that's all it needs right now: Decorators. Once those are there, people are gonna be like "What happened? Why is there so much more detail?"

In addition, people seem to have forgotten that EVERY SINGLE SURFACE LOOKS NORMAL MAPPED. Sheesh! When it comes to technical stuff, you guys are really hard to please.

6+ months is close to release? Thats a new one. Bungie already said that the beta will not be on par with the final product, it will be a better indication than the vidocs but not at the same level of polish as the final version. You do realize that games under development can have "completely new sets of visual and technical goods" multiple times a day? Bungie has the rough product done (hence, alpha) and are starting to work on polishing and implementing features to the point where the game is close to being complete (beta) and then tweaking and polishing before the final product. They have more than enough time to make a game that will be as good looking as they want.

Uh because its the same engine with placeholder textures, unfinished levels, and unfinished models? Just because your using an a certain game engine doesnt mean the graphics are automatically good. An engine just allows you to use fancy new effects and renders the game. You still need to make all the models in 3dmax or whatever and have artists make thousands of high res textures in photoshop and designers to make all the levels and implement all the art. For the E3 vid they created a special level and completely finished it. The real game goes at a much slower pace.

It's running on the alpha build of the new Halo 3 engine, almost all the graphical effects and layers are being withheld from the public for now because they are not necessary to get feedback about the gameplay.

It's running on a modified halo 2 engine. Halo 3 has it's own engine built from the ground up, like all bungie games.

Maddog, you dont seem to realise that the footage is over a year old. It's not even running on the Halo 3 engine. You know when they say "this is all about the features, not the graphics. You'll see that next month" they actually mean it, right?

Wait so Bungie in there latest vid are using a year old engine...because???

I made a thread earlier regarding how much they can live up to there previous Realtime/gameplay trailers...It doesn't look good. Ninja Vox..don't expect huge graphical leaps..its not gonna happen. and i'm betting its not going to look as good as the the so called Realtime E3 2006 trailer...just like Halo 2 didn't look as good as its earlier E3 trailer.

Dig it up....Know one can yet prove me wrong. ;)

MassEffect is right. I didn't know two people (you know who you are) could make so many anti-Halo 3 threads. It's really something special. Halo 3 looks nothing now like what we just saw in the video- read the weekly updates.

If I had to take a cheap shot, I'd ask when Killzone 2 is to be released, and how that gameplay is shaping up. But you wouldn't have a good answer for me, so I'll just not ask it.

Seriously.

all i know is its not running on UT, HL, Quake/Doom, or Crysis engine. because even their screens and game play in alpha build looks 1000000000000000000000000 times better then Halo 3 alpha build screen and game play footage.

I've proved you wrong a dozen times. :| Yes, they have shown old footage. Why? Because it was a documentary on the game's progress in which they CLEARLY say "this is over a year old, it's just to show you the features, not the graphics" but fanboys like you bash it anyway.

And as for your comments on Halo 2, i challenge you to post one image which the game apparently didn't live up to.

I think I'm in denial (its not just a river in Egypt anymore).  I really think Bungie is just snowing us all and having a good time.  They aren't really going to release something that looks that bad on next gen.  They have the real Halo game under wraps and are waiting until later to show us what they've really developed.  At least I hope so :?

See this is the type of stuff I feel the need to comment on, what about you makes you so superior that you can come on a forum and make some condescending, prickish remark like that? Oh  yeah and by the way, it has been confirmed countless times that the footage that we are seeing is taken from Alpha stage months ago. Not indicitive of the current state of the game, but how it was MONTHS ago.

Do i know how good the game will look, no I don't. But based simply on their track record I do believe that Halo 3 will look amazing by release time. I fancy this development approach that the teams at Forza and for Halo have taken, they are getting the gameplay right and then focusing on the graphics at the end. Seems to me as if the have their priorities straight, nothing wrong with that.Â
