Halo 3's September release and its effect on the Console War.

Recently, it was rumoured that instead of Halo 3 being released in November, that Microsoft and Bungie were aiming for a September release date (Link).  While many fans don't want the game to be rushed, I could care less, as Halo 2 ruined the series for me anyways.  But the bigger picture is, Microsoft can get their primary system seller out the door BEFORE the release of GTA IV.  This, I think, is the reason they are doing this. 

Halo 3 will sell a lot of consoles.  A good amount of Halo fans are waiting on getting the 360 until it comes out, so the game's ability to move consoles is pretty well accepted.  Grand Theft Auto is one of the highest selling franchises of all time, so if Microsoft can use Halo 3 to increase its installed base before GTA comes out, the success of GTA will be much higher on the 360 than on PS3.  

Will this move put the nail in Sony's coffin?  I don't think so, really.  But it will definitely hurt.

Halo 2 actually sold around 9 million WW and Halo sold over 6 million. Combined they sold close to 15+ million WW. I'd like to think that Halo would have had more sales if not for the fact it was the first title in the series on a brand new console, from a company who had never made a console.

 Halo 3 IMO will probably outsell both and move more 360s than any other game this fall.

That is true. Considering XBL has nearly tripled its user base in the last year, Halo 3 IMO will not only push 360 sales, but XBL sales as well and in the end will probably overall sell 10+ million copies WW.

I don't really care for halo either. But I can already imagince SW: if it gets 9.0+ lots of 'owned' threads by lemms & damage control threads by the trollcows (keywii) 8.9- lots of 'owned' threads by cows & damage control threads by lemms. if halo 3 dos flop, i would bet quite a few people would take back their 360s, I've talked to a bunch that like the 360 games, but they really just want to play halo3.Kook18

There are a handful of series that have larger fanbases.  Halo is big, but it isn't even close to being the biggest thing in gaming.

I think that for the US it is the biggest, but not world-wide.
