It hit me, the level design, expecially the jungle and enemies..the vizor appearance is also similar...the entire footage looked like a metroid prime game with a graphical overall. I have no doubt 343 looked towards the franchise for some insperation in alien design and weaponary. I will say the graphics look amazing...guessing because of it, it will remain linear if not more so. I hope they don't pull a bungie and downgrade the game visually, come launch.

I guess it did from the aesthetics side of it, and especially the enemy he reminded me of a Pirate from Metroid. But the general ebb and flow and structure of the game is still way to by the book FPS Halo. Honestly they should be borrowing that type of structure. A more open and larger environment where you're the chief. Maybe with some evolving abilities for his suit or his armory. I'm interested to see how the other enemy types fight(and I'm hoping there is a good chunk of new enemies, not like 5 new ones, and let's call it a day). 343 needs to avoid that Bungie plague of running out of ideas half way through the game.

Halo 4 does look good. Will be buying it. After skipping ODST, reach, and aniiversary i think this will be a good place to start again.

Only in enemies design. Level design likely won't be the same at all. Metroid Prime focused on exploration and that's not the case with Halo. Maybe that changed with Halo 4... would be nice.

As a huge Halo fan I was kinda worried about a non Bungie made Halo game but after watching that trailer I dont feel nearly as worried because it looked great and hopefully we get another great single player Halo game.

Another note. SO far 343 is doing what i wanted bungie to do all a long. Bring back that classic eerie feel the first Halo had, while introducing a variety of better weaponry/graphics. Even tho Halo 4 doesn't look that different gameplay-wise...the environments and new visual look, design..makes all the difference. Love it.

I thought that weird new enemy looked exactly like a space pirate from metroid prime which was a little disconcerting. Also those smaller enemies reminded me of creatures in MP3. It does look pretty though.

Every game nowadays has to have ripped off another game/studio in some way, shape, or form. The developer couldn't have just come up with the idea because they thought it would work well in that situation.

Not identical I will concede, the space pirate model is more organic, but in motion you can understand the recognition.

I haven't watched any footage. All I've seen is the pics posted above. And that is a rip off. Creature design for sci fi has literally unlimited range, yet in the above pics they hardly managed to break the silhouette and primary forms and even some of the secondary forms fall in the same. Breaking away from another design at the tertiary level does very little to change the overall design.

I would get my ass handed to me if I tried to pass that off as an original design to any of my clients. Far too many similarities between the two.

^ Need to look at more DeviantArt and read more sci-fi. I'm well aware science fiction has the potential for unlimited range of creature designs. And yet, the only non-humanoid thing anyone has ever seem to come up with every other year or so are insectoid alien races. And no, you wouldn't get your as$ handed to you if you passed that off as an original design. You'd be hired. I'd know that from experience.

As is said before there are former retro devs at 343, besides I wouldn't call it a rip off more like a tribute, remember the design for the elites was inspired from ridley's alien xenomorphs, they even admitted it.

1. Unaware of the original piece.

2. Not familiar with design tenets

3. Not one to give a f*ck.

I know it happens unintentionally. I found myself sculpting out a design about a month back and realized I was basically sculpting the damn Rankor from Star Wars. Had to go back to the thumbs process and get my ideas in check. Its all too easy to be influenced by what has come before, but it is part of your job as a designer to to realize that and take the necessary steps. Sometimes you need a fresh pair of eyes to look at your work and tell you that you've basically copied something else.

But really man, Deviant Art?

Look to guys like Jordu Schell, Cesar Dacol Jr, John Brown, Grassetti, Pointpusher (forgot his real name), Scott Spencer, Feng Zhu, Zack Petroc, etc...

There are some fine pieces of work on DA, don't get me wrong, but for the most part its a playground and hardly the place to hold up as some sort of authority regarding character and creature design.

One after another, people and games were rolled out that had many wondering what year it was. Halo 4, it turns out, does an excellent impression of Metroid Prime, the demo showing us a fetid forest through a convex tactical visor. http://www.edge-online.com/features/e3-2012-microsoft-press-conference-report You were not the only one that notice it,apparently Edge did as well.

there's an obvious likeness for sure. I wasn't going to post about it because I wasn't sure anyone else would spot it. There's no ripping off going on here, just that it's inspired by Metroid Prime. It''s not one thing either. The visor is not exactly right but almost. The enemies are not exactly right but almost. The cinematic and main threat are not exactly right but almost. Pacing, weapons, etc. all follow the pattern. If it were just one element I would not have noticed but all those similar elements together could not have been a coincidence

It absolutely looked gorgeous; however, I was not impressed with the gameplay. Which just seemed boring compared to compared to competitors demos. The preview looked almost claustrophobic because of how linear it was.

theres one guy from retro at 343....and it looks nothing like metroid

it looks like halo and a good one at that people take the two ppl that left retro(well 1) way too serious. 343 is a pretty big team and one guy i highly doubt put much emphasis to make it seem like metroid

What's this? A halo thread that is constructive and not inflammatory in nature? I agree that the metroid-esque look to it is very cool. I am excited for it and I don't have a 360

It didn't look like a rip off, but damn it looks inspired and very well made. The only Halo games that grabbed me were the first and ODST.

Actually, the visor thing that Chief did in the Halo 4 footage reminded me of the X-Ray visor straight away when I saw it, lol, but meh.

Looks good, wasn't expecting it.

I only said you'd get hired because I'm the one that does the hiring. I know of the original pieces. I know of designs tenets. And I do give a good f*ck about getting my money's worth. But I digress. I didn't say look to Deviant Art for a standard. I said look to Deviant Art for the fact that everyone seems to arrive at the same place. Once you understand that, you'll understand that Halo didn't have to rip off Metroid Prime. They all just seem to draw from the same essence. P.S I looked at the guys you mentioned, and while they're all great, it just further re-emphasizes my point. We creative individuals all source our inspirations from the same pool. While I don't know any of those guys from reputation, I've known many similar guys before, and looking at the portfolios offered online, I can make out the design decisions from a lot of their pieces. A lot of those works look experimental rather than functional, and as an artist you will know that the more you refine your initial concept to its final stages, the more your work homogenizes itself with the rest of the world.

Not identical I will concede, the space pirate model is more organic, but in motion you can understand the recognition.

didnt think it was that bad. I stand corrected lol.

As a lover of Metroid prime and Halo, I'm all for this design with Halo 4.

[QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"]They didn't rip off Metroid Prime. It looks similar because that's pretty much the template for science fiction.sandbox3d

Far too many similarities between the two.

it also looks like a mech you can make in Armored Core, metroid prime must of copied that then... its like a buggish design so.. its definitly a used template
