As we all know by now, Halo Infinite's FTP MP mode does not feature a BR mode. A lot of people speculated that naturally, a BR mode would be implemented as Halo Infinite would be coming into modern times. A lot has changed since Halo 5 and a BR mode seemed like an obvious move for many. This didn't happen though. We've been shown your standard 4v4, CTF, BTB, you know, the standard Halo modes. That's fine and all, but it left a lot to be desired for some. After all, a BR mode would be a big draw for many to support Halo over the likes of Warzone and Apex Legends. Even though there was no confirmation that a BR mode would come, fans have been hopeful that it would eventually come, if 343i was smart anyways.

Now, we have new information that a BR mode may actually be coming. Just a sliver of information, but enough to shine a big light on what people thought may be nothing more than wishful thinking.

"Dataminers have dug through Technical Preview file, and a Halo Infinite battle royale audio clip has been uncovered! Here’s the voice clip where the announces says, “battle royale!” That’s about it. There are no images or whatnot tied to it — at least so far. Mind, this doesn’t guarantee that there will be a battle royale mode in Halo Infinite, as this could be leftover code or something for Forge, but it is interesting that it’s there. With Halo Infinite’s multiplayer confirmed to be free-to-play, adding a battle royale mode might be a smart move by 343i Industries."

Could 343i have left this clip in the files on purpose to drum up hype or gauge interest? Or was this mistakenly left there and an ace up their sleeve is now ruined? I for one, hope Halo MP features a BR mode. I think Halo will have a much better chance of success with it and would be in better position to get people off of repetitive Warzone and boring Apex Legends. These games need some competition.

I hate the world of acronyms humanity has become. It took looking at the link at the end to figure out BR is battle royale.

I did not spell it out because I believe this is a commonly used acronym in the gaming world, so the audience is aware of what it means. However, Halo fans do sometimes confuse battle royale as the gun in Halo, battle rifle.

I believe that the game will suffer without a BR mode. I don't think it'll die without it, I don't think it'll be DOA without it, but I do think a BR mode would be a logical step to put Halo in a position it hasn't been in for many years. I can't see how developers and executives can't see this. If gamers can see it would be nothing but beneficial, surely they have to see it too.

@nnoyinghusband: I have a job where I have to know literally close to 200 acronyms if not more. Due to that, many other acronyms become ignored to not cause more confusion.

This is exactly what i've been saying to Pedro a month or so ago. A BR in Halo will refresh the series and put it back on the map at being a heavy hitter like it once was. Without it, the game will come, will be "popular enough" for the first month, but then it'll get buried by Warzon/Apex/Fortnite. If they do have a BR mode, and its good, the game could be massive yet again.

I feel you. I was in the Army and I work for the DOD now. Many, many acronyms. Honestly I've just chosen not to learn them anymore. I have no storage left.

No. Halo's multiplayer mode has classic Halo modes like 4v4, Capture the Flag, Big Team Battle. It's not a large open world map like Warzone or Apex Legends.

100% agreed. There is no doubt that Halo will be big once it launches, but it's how it will hold up, especially with a new COD, BF2042, Back4Blood, plenty else going on during its release timeframe. What are you doing different? Why Halo? Why shouldn't I invest my time elsewhere? I mean BF2042 has that Portal mode. That's a big deal. Who else is doing something like that? I mean they're reaching back deep into the BF catalogue and doing something none of their competitors are doing. I hope 343i sees that.

You are correct, BR=Battle Royale in the gaming world hence we use it on Gamespot whenever we see BR. But the thing is, Battle Royale itself is an actual movie so another issue that some may think its the movie lol.

As for Halo: Infinite having BR, not every game needs to have a BR. That isn't Halo's way and it never will be. BR is not necessary to the success of a game and just focus on the thing that makes Halo great. Just have a really good social and competitive MP.

It's funny to see Battle Royale take off. I actually remember saying that AAA companies should try to make a game like Hunger Games. I said it would be a breath of fresh air since everyone was tired of Call of Duty. They said that shooter fans would want guns, so that won't work. So I said "what about the idea of Hunger Games, but with guns? Like you start in a circle near the center, which has a bunch of weapons, medicine, etc. There are also other weapons, medicine, armor, etc., but they're scattered about the map and not as common compared to the circle. You can either go to the center where they have a bunch of guns, medicine, etc., or you can go further out. I explained the pros and cons of both strategies. I said going to the center will give you more supplies, but it'll be a blood bath. Going out will avoid a quick and brutal blood bath, but you'll have less supplies and have to search for things." I told them it would be a breath of fresh air from all of the Call of Duty games, they replied "if people can camp on the outskirts, what's to stop them from just camping there? This idea doesn't work." I replied, "they can do like Hunger Games, have an acid storm appear and push everyone towards the center, plus have actual predators in game so they aren't allowed to just sit around and camp." They still told me that it's too much of a risk. Games cost millions to make, and they'd be spending millions on developing and marketing a new game, that might not take off, as opposed to continuing with their tried and true formula of Call of Duty that sells 20 million every year.

Now look...

@nnoyinghusband:

I really hope it doesn’t come and go and become niche like Gears

because the shooters with consistent active communities typically have a BR nowadays

@luxuryheart: Battle Royale movie (hence its namesake for it to be used in the gaming community) came first before The Hunger Games became a thing, I always consider The Hunger Games to be the Bastard child and this isn't me saying The Hunger Games is a bad series, but it sure copy Battle Royale we all know today.

Are you one of the Halo purists who hates sprint? I've noticed that a lot of Halo purists don't like Halo making the move towards modern times.

yeah you can call me a purist i guess, I've played every halo at launch excluding 5.

Halo doesnt need to copy what COD and BF are doing. Sprint has been in Halo already, it was a perk in Reach. I'm not against it but I don't love it.

Halo 1-3 formula is peak Halo for a reason.

Respect the blueprint.

Halo will be DOA without a battle royale mode. It’s by far the most popular mode in COD, and COD is still the biggest shooter out there.

I am most hyped for Aliens Fireteam, hope it turns out good. I'll try Hades since it will be on Game Pass, honestly it doesn't even look like something I'd normally play but people rave about it so I wanna see what all the hype is about.

I see it says Toy Soldiers is getting an HD remaster. Didn't know. I might consider getting it depending on whether it has been improved a lot, and price. I still have the older games, the two XBLA games from the Xbox 360 and the other one that released on 8th gen consoles. Fun games.

Valorant is one of the most popular games on twitch, in fact looking at the view caount as of 10:30 pm eastern time on twitch, the only FPS drawing more views than Valorant is Apex Legends.

Even if you added 30k (15k a piece for modern warfare and black ops separate from warzone), it would still be losing to valorant on the view count. Valorant don't even have a 2v2 mode, much less a battle royale. CS GO n Siege are hella old, the former is at close to 40k viewers, and Siege a game way older than the new Black Ops is holding serve.

BR is not actually that necessary for Halo's success. It being free 2 play and on PC n cross play day 1 is already a huge boon in its favor. It needs to actually be good, complete, and strike that happy balance between having stuff the boomer halo fans will like while having stuff for the mass market to not find the game dated, because lets be real Call of Duty players are scrubs. They don't like playing games where they can get easily exposed.

Battle Royale would be huge for Halo, but it would be a foolish bet to go against their own fanbase for the sake of the hot trend. As much as I like Halo 5's core mechanics (it's probably the deepest a Halo game has been, and I'd only put other arena shooters like Quake, Unreal, Tribes and their imitators over it) having a gameplay loop that your own fanbase is divided on doesn't create good word of mouth. Need something that brings some energy back to the audience.

Notice how MCC basically back from the dead, because of positive buzz from a PC version. In fact I'd say that PC version is a big reason for the pre release hype for Infinite having any momentum to begin with. Having a more playable, smoother version of Halo 3 did a lot for the morale of the player base.
