Halo Infinite MP going F2P??

new leaks have suggested Halo Infinite will also have a free-to-play multiplayer. Details on the currently unannounced multiplayer were first posted by retailer Smyths Toys, describing the mode as a “groundbreaking free-to-play multiplayer experience” with “greatly reduced load times” and up to 120FPS gameplay on Xbox Series X. Although the listing has since been pulled, The Verge says it’s still viewable by looking at Google‘s cache.

An Xbox leaker named Klobrille who previously confirmed a myriad of details on Halo Infinite before its official reveal also says the game’s multiplayer will be free-to-play and that it will offer a Battle Pass of some sort, similar to several other multiplayer shooters on the market, as well as new customization options.

343 Industries hasn’t revealed much about the multiplayer for Halo Infinite yet. The game developer recently posted a lengthy blog in response to Halo Infinite yesterday, including the criticism about its graphics and visuals.

What?? Battlepass?? F2P???

This be rumors or could this be real? After hearing such things im angry, will halo MP still have its game modes and forge? What in the world would a battlepass do? Give cosmetics? like COD and fortnite???

On another hand "free" sounds good, but at what cost???

What is going on here.. Expand the player base as much as possible???

@Sevenizz: I dont know how i feel about Halo MP going F2P... Might mess it up, i love Halo MP but im wondering if this might be a separate MP mode altogether.... I swear they better not sacrifice the quality of the MP for some Battle Royal BS. battle pass for halo???

Of course they were gonna to. How else are you supposed to compete with Apex, Fortnite, Warzone and that Chinese Tojan game?

I feel they should have done this a long time ago. But, they were stuck in Xbox only mode back then.

Well as long as I can just buy the “full package” with the campaign and multiplayer then I’m not bothered with them offering a free to play multiplayer aspect.

As someone who played all Halo campaigns and just about 10 minutes of multiplayer... I don't care, let the developer do their job then decide if you like it or not. Save some outrage for release.

@phbz: as someone who's played halo since xbox launch november 15th 2001, which is before all of you assholes lol, free to play is bad news period.

It's gonna make them lots of money though if it's not total trash. Just because it's "free", I wouldn't write it off yet.

Well, free keeps the community strong, free also probably means people paying for cosmetic upgrades, and those that don't want to play have to grind for them. I play a lot of Halo 5 for Firefight but damn I am still grinding for good weapon variant unlocks and other cosmetic unlocks and such. Gears 5 started out with ridiculous grinding, got somewhat better in Operation 4, Gears 4 too took a long time before they updated the Horde MP class XP could be gained quicker.

Anyhow, not been a fan of Halo PvP MP for a long time, I hope they keep the Warzone Firefight PvE MP in this next one, and keep supporting it with updates, or even adapt a Forge mode for Firefight.

i cant stand games that require you to login to some screen name to play online, all i wanna do is choose a character and enter my player name and join a server like you would in quake 2 or any true multiplayer fps.

i cant stand these stupid logins/passwords/emails needed/store fronts its complete shit.

anything with a login server/email/password needed isnt a true multiplayer game and never will be.

the only future proof games are games like quake where there is no stupid service to login to.

even if the master server is down you can still play online, platforms like steam arent future proof and neither is xbox live.

When they are giving away Infinite in Game Pass, this F2P move became a necessity. Multiplayer is the draw to Halo, and the F2P model will maximize exposure and revenue potential. I'm just not sure the game will be good enough for people to really care in any big way...

games requiring you to make an acount sign up via email to play it online are dogshit, and will never be future proof.

only a true dedicated server/ip address connect model not connected to some ''login service'' are future proof games.

free to play is only good for microsoft it's not good for the consumer.

games like quake will still be playable when services like steam/xbox live are shut down that proves my point on this subject tho.,

like quake 3's master server was down awhile back, yet i could still play it online because i found websites that listed dedicated server ip addresses lol even if the master server is down u can still host servers or find em off website.

all a master server does is gather dedicated servers and put them in one place ''inside'' the game, these are the only future proof games tho.

Multiplayer games live and die on their active player count. F2P would make sense to ensure this, especially with 343's multi-year plan to expand Halo Infinite. The online multiplayer market is much more saturated these days, between Overwatch, RB6: Siege, CS: GO, Valorant, and of course the Battle Royale games. New entrants into this market will need a fast start, and this is potentially the best way to do it.

Of course, we will need to look at the monetisation. Judging from previous Halo games, I think there are plenty of opportunities here, but also plenty of ways it can get icky.

Yeah, that's how I would prefer it too, but we don't live in that reality. Personally, I'm more forgiving towards F2P games, because their economics rely heavily on a very small section of the player base.

Yep. Any promises they make about no microtransactions are meaningless because we already know how fast that can change.
