Halo Infinite's "coating" system has fans concerned about microtransactions.

Developer 343 Industries recently announced that weapon, vehicle, and player skins in Halo Infinite will be called "coatings," and immediately, people expressed concerns about microtransactions.

Community manager John Junyszek has now responded. Writing on Twitter, he said that while Halo Infinite will have a microtransaction store, it won't be the only way to get the game's customization items, which go beyond coatings.

"There will be all kinds customization items (including coatings) that can be earned in-game and earned as special rewards," Junyszek said. "Will there be purchases? Sure. Is that the only way? Absolutely not."

With the new seven-layer coating system, it appears Halo Infinite will offer many more options to players looking to create a player that is unique. "Although moving away from the old color system was a tough call, it has allowed us to go into greater detail and variation with armor color, materials, patterns, etc. You are going to look great in Halo Infinite," Junyszek said.

We have known for years that Halo Infinite would have a microtransaction store. In 2018, a job listing at 343 mentioned microtransactions and how developers will use human pyschology and behavioural analysis to encourage people to keep coming back.

While Halo Infinite will have microtransactions, there will be no paid loot boxes. Given that Halo Infinite's multiplayer will be free-to-play, it makes sense that the game will support microtransactions as a way to make money from the product.

It's understandable that fans would have concerns about microtransactions, given how they can be handled in various games. It's good to know that Halo Infinite will let players earn items through gameplay, but it's too soon to say how player-friendly the system will be until we learn more about the specifics.

While Halo Infinite doesn't release until 2021, you can get your hands on multiplayer skins by purchasing sugary snacks and shopping at GameStop.

I guess with cosmetics it's becoming like any other shooter. I don't think free to play has anything to do with it. COD games charge full price and still charge for cosmetics. Your thoughts, SW? Does this have you concerned about the quality of the game?

Microsoft's focus on microtransactions and GaaS games have had me worried for a while now, but it's whatever. It's not as if you really have to dish out 60 bucks for a microsoft game, these days.

Multiplayer is Free to Play. Its a given the game will be microtransaction heavy, they need to recoup somewhere.

I don't mind microtransactions as long as:

a) They are not pay to win

b) They do not encourage gambling tactics (lot boxes etc)

Halo fans should be concerned about Infintie as a whole, not just the coating system.

Well this shouldn’t effect lemmings at all. They’ve spent this whole generation defending game as a service model and other forms of throwing there money at the tv concept, that they’ll be okay with Halo Inf, nickel and dimeing them on a daily basis

I only play the campaign so this is of little concern to me. Now the campaign on the other hand, well. 😑

I had no problem with how it was handled in Halo 5 and they will be obtainable in normal gameplay so I trust that it will be handled correctly in this game as well.

Meh, not exactly something I like (nor something I spend money on), but it seems like it has no impact on the actual game and is only cosmetic so I can tolerate that.

I sort of feel the same way, though I don't like the practice in general if I had my way.

I'm not all worry about microtransactions in Halo Infinite. I'm just all worry if the Campaign won't be as good as it should be since this is the very last Halo game in the series. It's all or nothing for the Campaign. MP stuff is the least of my worries.

I am more worry about them focusing on this crap and not focusing on giving the game a proper next gen look and performance.

Isn't this their forte compared to sony and nintendo? Let them do what they want then.

Not a concern. I played the hell out of 5, never bought a single thing, and I still fell I’ve gotten my money’s worth.

You think this has anything to do with gamepass? Micro transactions are a part of hundreds of games and they have nothing to do with gamepass. The hate is clouding your judgement

Meh honestly the game looking like crap aside, I could care less about paied cosmetics stuff tbh..

Game is DEAD, in DEVELOPMENT HELL and mismanaged by INCOMPETENT GHOULS.
