Microsoft Will Shut Down ‘Halo’ Xbox 360 Online Services in December 2021

This is pretty sad but at least all of the games can still be played via the MCC on Xbox One/Xbox Series X. I know there are people who swear by the original games and say they are superior but at least you'll still be able to continue playing them past 2021. That's more that can be said for nearly all of Sony's first party PS3 titles, which started shutting down as early as 2014 with the Resistance/SOCOM games and ended late 2019 with Uncharted 2/3 and The Last of Us. Hell, even PS4's Driveclub went offline this year.

I wish Sony would service their games for as long as Microsoft does. I was just playing Gears of War 2 online with a friend the other night on Xbox One, a game that is twelve years old still with the servers up and running.

Yeah saw this news earlier and was a bit surprised that they were still up. Anyway it makes sense since there’s the MCC and it’s better to have the player focused in there.

Why though? Many older games have thousands of daily players. Or did, at least, before servers shutdown.

And they would be up for a looooot longer if MS just open-scoured the server code.

Wait are you telling me Sony games have just tacked on MP? I swear cows told me MP component of Sony games are world class.

I guess it depends on your opinion. I very much enjoy the multiplayer of Uncharted 2, Uncharted 3, The Last of Us. I would not call them tacked on. They all have had dedicated communities for years. There is actually a discord where fans are working to get Uncharted 2 and 3 back up running. Same thing with SOCOM.

Good to see MS still supporting it i guess, i just have no interest in Halo.

Yeah Sony should be dragged over the coals for its piss poor effort in MP and the availability of it.

No one plays Halo anymore so this is no surprise.

That is the disappointing thing about games that rely on a centralized server to play online. Once those servers are no longer supported, the game instantly becomes unplayable. There is no going back to experience it anymore after that. Not like OG Xbox stuff which often rely on user created lobbies that you could join and play. Many of those games, if you have the original hardware, could still be played today, assuming Xbox live worked on those consoles. I know their PC counterparts are still playable.

R.I.P still get a tear in my eye when i think back to when the og Halo 2 servers shut down.. at least i got MCC on PC
