I often hear how the handheld consoles are running their last cycle and that they'll soon get replaced by phones.

But how much weight does that claim have?

Are the 3DS and Vita really the last of a kind?

Are the low 3DS' sales not only a Nintendo problem and can the Vita expect the same fate?

Discuss.

I wouldnt say dying. But smartphones and tabs are definitely denting their markets with aluminum bats and steel pipes.

I think they are. I wanted a vita, until I realized, what's the point? I can just go get on a laptop or web browze on my phone if I'm that bored. Also 250$ is too much, maybe if it was 100$.

Yeah i'd say hand helds are dying. I'd like to see sony make a gaming phone, thats better than the xperia play. I think sony just bought out ericsson recently a few days ago, so hopefully they shift their focus onto a playstation phone, if they did, it would do well imo.

Yeah, they will need to adapt or they will have to settle for a smaller market.

Dunno why they didn't make the vita a cellphone in the first place.

They're not as important, so yeah, technically... sad as it means JRPG's are going to die.

Depends what you want from a handheld, be it a portable console experience or quick entertainment on the go. My iPad has both and cheaper too (to support).

VIta will revitalize things as its continuing to evolve the PSP all around entertainment philosophy. With added 3G connectivity, the ability to play streamed PS3 games, and dual analog sticks, I'm sold.

There is still a market for handhelds so they aren't dead yet.

this, I think a large one too. Why aren't consoles dead when most peoples computers, laptops and now tablets can play games (browser, flash) perfectly fine? Also children will not be getting phone contracts anytime soon. It might make a dent for those who maybe bought brain training for the entire DS lifespan, but I think there is still a big market for dedicated handhelds, if people can carry around a tablet they can easily fit a 3DS in their bag or pocket..

I agree. For me I tend to use my PSP as a somewhat console experience. I really like playing RPGs on system. But is probably because a lot of Japanese devs develop more RPGs (the better ones) on the handheld systems.

They're changing is all. I have an Xperia Play, and it's proving its metal. Believe me, great mobile games are now more than ever.

Well the Vita is dying as it is the successor of the Dead Handheld the PSP.

But in general Nintendo Handhelds will survive for at least 50 years because they make the best games of alltime.Vita doesnt compete with the 3DS as it is not good enough and I can only see it becoming Sonys Dreamcast.

For a dead handheld it's doing pretty good. Sure it isn't selling as much as the DS, but it survived and outsold the HD twins.

Handhelds will probably lose a large portion of the market that the DS gained with games like Brain Age to mobile phones. They aren't going to lose the core gamers to mobile phones any time soon, though.

Unless they start making Android versions of great JRPGs then I'll hold onto my DS. I pretty much exclusively use it for RPGs, there are so many great ones, and is especially useful because I can carry it everywhere I go. Do a couple turns of battle on a smoke break at work, close the unit and resume later. I really enjoy them more on a handheld because I love old school graphics, and a lot of the old school ports. Otherwise I'll stick to PC and PS3 for just about every other genre of games.
