I doubt it'll ever replace consoles for me, but the 3DS has definitely picked up a considerable portion of playtime considering I use to be one of those lolhandhelds guys less than six months ago :P
Won't happen. Handheld consoles themselves are a dying breed. Smartphones will replace handheld consoles in near future. This will probably be the last generation of handheld consoles.
Guys I know that I am probably the odd one on this subject, but I have really lost all passion for console gaming. I would much rather play games on my PC or my iPhone. This leads me to think maybe its time for me to step into the realm of hand held gaming with the PSVita. I was able to get some good play time with one at a local store and I have to say I was highly impressed with the visuals, controls and overall feel of the Vita. It just screamed quality to me. Yes, I know that the library of games is thin right now and $249 might seem pricey for a handheld, but when I look around and see everyone paying games on the smart phones, tablets, 3DS's and now the Vita, I just feel that maybe I should jump in as well!! Your thoughts?ShoTTyMcNaDeSHandhelds HAVE replaced consoles for me until next gen arrives. This gen has gotten old. It's the same crap over and over again. MS just announced 2 more Forza games! Seriously?!? 2 more?!? It's time to stop. That's why I went to handhelds. They are easier to pick up and play when you don't have a lot of time like myself, and new things like the Vita and 3DS provide new experiences that consoles right now just can't provide. I've had a blast with Mario Kart, Ace Combat on the 3DS and I'm loving Wipeout and Hot Shots on the Vita. Plus I'm getting MLB the show tomorrow and Motorstorm RC is a FREE download tomorrow for all Vita owners. It's exciting to be a handheld gamer right now.
[QUOTE="Icarian"]well why not considered smartphone as the new handheld. A dedicated device will never be the same as a generalized device. The whole "Jack of all trades, master of none" thing.Won't happen. Handheld consoles themselves are a dying breed. Smartphones will replace handheld consoles in near future. Play whatever you want. I've gotten more enjoyment out of Jetpack Joyride than anything else in 2012 thus far and that game is free. If you enjoy something play it, if you don't enjoy it than don't play it. If you feel attracted to mobile and handheld gaming than take the dive. Your gut instinct is usually the best thing to listen to.
I only want to play on my Vita lately, if it got all the mutliplats PS3/360 got i wouldnt care about playing on consoles much at all. I know i wont be able to just play Vita forever though i know there are alot of games that i will be wanting to play on other systems, I am really hanging out for Diablo 3 and the next WoW expansion for example. If you are wanting to make the jump into the handheld space though then the Vita is the way to go.
Handhelds will replace consoles. Handhelds would be a powerhouse device that would be able to connect to your tv and you could also play games on the go. Everything will be wireless and 4g will be across the world where you could play online anywhere. Consoles are obvious outdated devices.
handheld electronics is a smartphone. It is a category. There will be an all-in-one device 10-15 years from nowWon't happen. Handheld consoles themselves are a dying breed. Smartphones will replace handheld consoles in near future. This will probably be the last generation of handheld consoles.

Think of it more like "games replacing games"
I mean honestly if you like the games on a handheld then why would you not play them over games you don't want to play? It shouldn't matter what type of system they're on. It's not as if there is inherently less quality about a handheld game simply because it's on a handheld.

Your thoughts?ShoTTyMcNaDeSActually It is not as unlikely as many make it out to be. I remember reading an article where one of the creators of the early modern computer predicted that pocket PC's and smartphones would be the death of the conventional computer in a near future, At the time I thought that the man was crazy but the smartphone+tablet craze which has been raging these last few years, mixed with rise of cloudbased technology has certainly given me pause to think.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon further thought, I have come to the conclusion that there is a very real possibility of tablets, cloudbased tech and smartphones rendering stationary PC's and dedicated consoles obsolete and replacing them entirely. Fortunately this would have no effect on videogames tho.

Yes. Some people just refuse to see this. Phones are getting better and better in gaming. Bad launches of Vita and 3DS just supports this view. Dedicated handheld gaming consoles will die.

IF sales start decreasing maybe but 3ds beat ds 1year sales in months and vita sold out in my area psp didn't. Both sold more than home consoles last gen same might happen again this gen.Gaming on an iPhone or tablet or whatever for me NEVER! Handhelds for me will never replace console gaming. They're more of a compliment to the console..

I don't travel enough to use a handheld, and I value my user experience and not a graphics whore, so a console is perfect for me.
It's simple, cheap and does what I want.
When it stops entertaining me I'll stop using it.
.. The Vita is mroe then $249.. People stop saying that is, you can't do jack with it inless you get Sony's memory card which can be anywhere from $20 more to a $100.. Its such bull, if Sony weren't greedy **** we could be using regular sd cards with more memory and one thats much cheaper.
