As much as I love tablets I think they are a time for a quick game of cut the rope or something along the lines of that...while with handhelds I can play them for hours without stopping. What do you guys think??

3DS will live... Next Nintendo handheld will face the same fate.
3DS and the Iphones are swarming the Vita as Sony the corporation crashes and burns.
Handhelds can not compete with multimedia devices.
I love how you exaggerate everthing. It's not that handhelds cannot compete with multimedia devices, it's more of handheld gaming devices don't compete with multimedia devices. Do you actually believe that people who buy iPad are buying it instead of 3DS? The target consumers differ. And most of the reason why Nintendo is failing is because of High Yen currency. And Sony is failing mostly because of their non-gaming departments.Game performance is quite unimpressive on - I suppose they can now be considered mid-level - tablets like the iPad 2, Galaxy Tab 10.1, Transformer Prime, etc. Only the most simple of games are any fun to play and they're fun to play solely for their novelty. If you can run ROMs and play some old SNES games, those run alright from my experience, but again, they're just SNES games. The PSX emulator I tried never worked right so I can't say how well they perform, so I'll digress.
I have tablets, handhelds and smartphones, that way I always win.
I even bought a 360 against my will, just so I could be a true Manticore. That's how big of a loser I am.
Tablet for sure, I received an IPad2 for Christmas and love it, take it to work, there's so much to do on it. So the games aren't as great as handhelds? WHo cares? I rarely play games on my tablet anyway, and I doubt I'd spend much time doing it on a handheld. That's what my console is for.As much as I love tablets I think they are a time for a quick game of cut the rope or something along the lines of that...while with handhelds I can play them for hours without stopping. Try listening to your whole itunes library, or writing a document, putting it in dropbox, and its sitting there in a folder on your desktop ready to print..watching netflix, youtube, using learning apps to learn a new language, surfing the web (yes I know you can on vita..but all reviews say it is slow and horrible). Tablets > handheldTry playing a FPS on a tablet. Handhelds > Tablets

I think you're right. Some of the best iOS games are boring if you sit and play them for extended periods. Smart devices are perfect for quick game sessions and thus perfect for portable gaming. And yet I still thoroughly enjoy my handhelds, because whenever I have more than a few minutes to kill, or when I'm just sitting at home with indefinite time, they give me a vastly better experience. As much as I love tablets I think they are a time for a quick game of cut the rope or something along the lines of that...while with handhelds I can play them for hours without stopping. I never, ever use my handhelds outside of my house. Ever.
If I'm outside of my house, I'm never in a position where I would be able to concentrate on a video game for extended periods of time.
If I'm at a friends house, well, they all have consoles, just like I do, so I'm not gonna be playing on a handheld.
I never play games on my tablet. Ever.
The only time I'll ever play a game on the go is Farmville on my iPhone 4S.
Yeah, FarmVille, I'm level 37, and it rocks. I plant stuff on my farm, and it takes like 2 minutes.
Sometimes I play other games on my iPhone, like this one called Zenonia and Demon Hunter, but usually just FarmVille.
I consider handhelds like consoles. The games are too deep when I'm on the go. If I'm on the go, it usually means I have something I need to be doing. It's not like I take the bus or train anywhere, I have a car. I consider handhelds like another home console, because they all have big libraries of games, and I don't wanna miss out on the Zelda and Mario games that you can't play on the big screen TV consoles.
The smartphone is good for burning a few minutes on FarmVille every once in a while, but usually I just browse the web instead, and see what the trolls are saying on System Wars when I'm caught in traffic.

Aaaaand they all fail by trying to do TPS.
Handhelds are too big these days. I'm saying tablets, by far. The next Ipad, taking the Apple Gamestore into consideration, will likely support gamepads. Many tablets already do this. Developers are NOT going to ignore the huge market. Would you rather play Marvel vs Capcom on a dinky 5inch psv screen, or play MvC, sitting next to your buddy, with two controllers, on a high res 10 inch screen?

The only thing that worries me about tablets--and apple specifically--is the constant need/want to upgrade. I bought a 3DS knowing it will get supported, with maybe one minor system upgrade at some point in time.
[QUOTE="Heirren"]I'll take the vita. Why? Vita is going to be dead when the iPad 3 and monthly Samsung Galaxy Tabs roll out (however that's another issue)Handhelds are too big these days. They are not representative of what mobile and tablet gaming can do. If you want to know more about Mobile/tablet gaming like iOS and Android beyond what SW thinks it is go see Toucharcade and pocketgamer.AdmiralBison
Key word "can". What limits tablets is the expected sub $5 games. You simply cannot create a nicely produced in-depth game and sell it at that price unless you are 100 percent sure it will be a massive hit. I mean you could, but there'd be huge risks, or you would have to not pay all the various artists that worked on the game.

The RE games on the 3DS are fine.:? Guess you hated RE4 controls since it was pretty much the same control layout.

Sure. Too bad you're not controlling the same game. Revelaitons' shooting doesn't touch RE 4's, judging from the demo.
Even if it did play just like RE 4, it's hardly what I'd call "true handheld gaming". Neither iOS nor handhelds benefit from chasing shooters (except the Vita, I guess)

Unless the HD version of RE4's controls is weak compare to the original, I found to be much smoother in Revelations. And both REgames on the 3DS could be consider "true handheld gaming" due to their short burst nature (at least Merc and Raid Mode) and even if they aren't don't see how they fail. The IOS and tablet ones looks crap through.

Ha ha ha. You really don't play of mobile and tablets. There are so many sales of high production value games at almost every occasion and sometimes even go free for a period of time it will make your head spin. A lot do become successful, Soul Calibre, GTA3, Real Racing, Infintity Blade.... Also a huge risks in developing games if it's not a sure fire hit can be applied with the other platforms. With me having a smart phone, I see no reason to own a tablet. My phone does everything a tablet can do plus more. Now if comparing my phone to a handheld, I would take both. But if I could only pick one, it would easily be my phone.AmazonTreeBoaTry writing a document or watching a movie on a phone vs. a tablet. There's a big difference.
Let me know when real games are being independently developed for tablets.meetroid8
Does Project Fiona count :)
Hows this?

I'd buy one if a tablet was released that had standard touchscreen capablities but with analogs and buttons for gaming.
It would replace laptops for sure.
I would prefer a handheld built for gaming as opposed to a tablet for gaming, just because of the buttons. With everything wanting to be a touch screen these days, it just seems a little annoying. Could i adapt to something without buttons, yeah, but why use an iPad for cut the rope when I can use a PSP for Daxter?
on my travels i usually have my Iphone and PSP with me (sometimes i'll have my DS Lite, only sometimes though). like when i'm at the airport, riding the bus, in the plane, places such as this.
what do i typically play on?
PSP
why you ask? because while there are a few games on Iphone i'll play, there is nothing as rich as the games i could play on my PSP, and probably more important then that. when i'm traveling... I need a freakin' phone. Much more likely to run out the battery on the PSP then i am with the phone. I tend to get paranoid and keep the juice on my Iphone above 50%, once it gets lower then that i stay away from games and just keep it on until i cn get a chance to recharge it.
This will probably end up being the case for me again when i get my Vita next week. I'll have the Vita (and eventually 3DS) and my Iphone when i'm traveling.
