I would just like to say that this month marks the 30th anniversary of the Atari 2600. it may not seem like it matters now, but when it was released back in October of 1977 it was revolutionary, it was the first successful home console, the first home console to use changing cartridges (back then the games came built in). If you have not played an Atari 2600 it's a great experience and there are still lots of people who make games for it (home-brewers mostly) I just wanted to point out that modern gaming wouldn't be where it is today if it weren't for the Atari 2600. So heres to you Atari 2600 happy birthday:)

And yet Arcade and PC gaming was blooming, and in other parts like in Japan there were other consoles.

I am thirty this year, but remember getting an Atari 2600 probably when I was 6 years old (Asteroids was my first game). So I got the console 6 years into it's lifespan. Man I feel gypped. J/K, but I do remember Atari 5200 commercials not long after I got the atari. Anyone remember those commercials?

Yeah, you were cheated!

Seriously, I am 36. I got an Atari shortly after launch when I saw one at a girls house I went to school with (yeah, a girl was actually the first person at my school to get in on the videogame crraze). Eventually, the whole school had one.

On the positive side, your parents probably didn't spend $220 on it like mine did. And by the time the 5200 came out, I was hooked and had to have it. Interestly, I don't remember how much that one cost. I also don't remember being there when it was bought. I guess that is why I don't remember the price.

They got it really really cheap. I guess it was a boon, because I didn't know any better (hey I was 0 years old when it came out) and I assume games were cheaper because my notoriously cheap parents and uncles kept the games coming pretty steady.
