So I was at the Melbourne eGames Expo today and as I was passing dozens of console booths I peered over towards the PC section and thought "Ahh... the last bastion of hardcore gaming... home..."

Then it dawned on me - as porting games becomes a more widely accepted means of distribution, and as developers are becoming more aware of a casual and potentially prosperous audience, which console... as casual as they may seem... appears to be more "hardcore" - more kitted out for hermits; a console designed for game developers, not casuals?

I'll put my money on the PS3. I just think all that raw power needs to go and appeal to someone... that someone being a PC user who's PC is either being repaired or otherwise inaccessible.

I think it goes to the 360 because it has more games, but i'm a PC gamer who sees the PS3 as the better value since most 360 games end up on PC anyway. I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer though :|............

Well assuming hardcore gamers are all about games I'd say the 360...it also has the online hardcore gamers want with the universal headsets and heft competition and it has the two most competitive console shooters out there (Halo and Gears of War)

The Wii is a joke, I haven't played it since Brawl came out.

Most hermits would not want to play a shooter competitively without a mouse, or pay a monthly fee for what they can get for free.

As a hermit who delved into this gen, the PS3 was the clear choice.

When you rule out all the existing/probable PC ports from the 360 library it is not very compelling. (Gears 2, Fable 2 for eg)

In contrast, this year the PS3s AAAA, and two AAA exclusives will not appear on the PC, or any other console for that matter.'

Hardcore gaming is word we gamers came up with right?  There is no such thing as a hardcore stamp collector. Maybe if you are interested in cliff diving, glass eating, something like that, then the word hardcore sounds right.

OT, the most competitive console is by far Xbox 360. Bigger more experienced userbase, better online support. You wan`t to play the best clans, 360 is the way to go.

As a hermit, I enjoy all type of shooter, whether be on keyboard and mouse or controller. I find the exclusives on the 360 good enough for me to warrent ownership of one.

It is likely Fable and Gears 2 will come to the PC like their predecessors, in which case, the 360 would have barely any exclusives at all.

The idea was to pick just one. See, that's where it gets a bit tricky, yeah? Sure you can pick the Xbox 360 for online pay as more hardcore than the PS3 - but exclusive wise, everything on the Xbox will almost certainly make it to the PC, so a hardcore gamer with a brain would rule out the Xbox.

It's quite simply when you think about it. PS3 has a number of good exclusives as well as a blu-ray player.

I'm just asking for everyone else's opinion.

fable 2 maybe, but gears of war2 will not be going to pc, both MS and EPIC have clearly stated this.

Im going to repeat what a lot of people probably have already said. If you are a hardcore gamer. You dont pick one console. You pick every console that comes out. Plain and simple dude. I cant afford all the consoles this gen. I have Wii and 360. But If I had the money....I would have all 3. Its best to enjoy every game you can. Fanboys stink up the industry.

well that doesn't sound very hardcore of you :P :)

Was the term "hardcore" for games/gamers always this over used?  I never really noticed it in previous generations, but in this generation it seems like alot of people who are called hardcore gamers were what'd be the casual gamers of previous generations.  Is "hardcore" the new fad?  Since the brain training games and the like hit it big, has anything that's not part of that just become hardcore(when it wouldn't have been considered such before then).. or is hardcore meant for just the games with mature content, no matter their ease or stupidity?  Why do people not think of the truelly challenging and deep games when they think/talk of hardcore?   Why don't people praise niche games more when talking about hardcore gaming?

I would say anything but Wii. 360 would be the first choice with games like Ace Combat, Forza Motorsport, Dead or Alive, etc. But then again PS3 does have Warhawk, MGSIV, & GT5 soon. I know the Wii didnt appeal to me for very long. I beat Super Mario Galaxy (one of the best games this gen) and that was that. Mario Kart, HoTD, Z&W, etc were ok games, but didnt keep my interest. Looking at this holiday season when Gears, Fable, Fallout, CoD, B&K, etc were all coming out for the 360, and I wanted nothing for the Wii, I sold the Wii.

By nature, it's the PC.  The words "hardcore" and "console" don't generally go together.

Maybe I grew up or something but I loved my SNES, and N64 when I was young. Those RARE games kept me entertained forever and I loved Super Mario 64. It was a great console but the third party support went away oddly enough so I also had a PS1. Last gen I also had a Gamecube which I used for Capcom games and the Nintendo first parties which disappointed me. I played my PS2 more. Now the Wii just sucks, gimmicky controls and nothing there for a core gamer to enjoy.

even though i'm a ps3 owner, i'm gonna have to go with 360 on this one. i've never seen such a die hard group of individuals. i swear, MS could make a game that gets a 1 and people would be on these forums defending the hell outta of, just because it contained master chief, marcus fenix, shepard, and calvin pissing on the ps3 logo. that my friends is dedication.

That's exactly what makes him a hardcore gamer in the first place !

Hardcore gamers need to play everyday for many hours, so I don't see how a hardcore gamer could cope with the RROD issue with the 360.

wii has the worst line-up of titles since the begining of video games.

the only titles i own are smg, ssbb and zelda which is pathetic .  i do have a few vc games but compared to the 30 disc based game i own on 360 and 10 xbla games the wii is a gimped console for the hardcore

i bought mp3 for my little cousin

PS3 + PC easily. Too many titles are shared between the 360/PC to warrant having both.

If I can only choose one...Microsoft Xbox 360!

On a side note: LOL, theres a Blu-Ray ad next to where I'm supposed to type my post :P

The 360 because of the amount of great games. Any system can be hardcore it just depends on what one likes the most. The Wii has the most casual gamers because of the numbers sold. The PS3 also has a large number of casual gamers because of the Blu Ray player.

The only reason why you can say "gimped down" is because you've paid 200 bucks for your update. The fact of the matter is when a console is first released it is better than most PCs on the market at that time.

So I will keep my "gimped down" gaming consoles that are cheaper, funnier and more simple than any PC game. And if a little better graphics are that important to you, go ahead and spend your 200 bucks every 2 years ;)

And as for the TC question it's the 360 all the way no matter how anyone tries to re-word your question! 360 has the most games and better online.
