I'm currently playing Alan Wake and I'm underwhlemed how un-scary it all is. shadowy hillbillies and squawking crows arent scary. I havent batted an eye yet, even the random 'jump' moments are lame. pretty lackluster, boring stuff for something billed as a psychological thriller

the only games that ever made me feel really uneasy was the silent hill games. now thats atmosphere. team silent really nailed it

Dead Space had some pretty good scares, along with the older resident evils. I also remember when I was like 5yo and playing Doom 1, and being terrified of the invisible pink monsters

Resident Evil 2 was the only game that terrified me. Mind you I was very young when I played it (8-9)and I was stupid enough to think a zombie apacolypse could happen. But yeah, scared me to death.

Everything nowadays doesnt really give me any real scares. Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 were good for a jump or 2 but they were just cheap scares.

No game has really scared me, but the closest thing I've experienced was in SH2, when you get the first glimpse of Pyramidhead (not the cut scene) He's behind some bars on some aisle and you have to go through a door next to those bars. I was like "Oh man wTF is that??" Kinda freaked me out the first time.

Ya know, I was too. The first one when those weird Chimera are carrying those explosive balls of whatever, and in Resistance 2 when you're walking around the dark in house's basement. Kinda freaked me out, just for a moment anyway... lol. But the original Resident Evil's freaked me out.

Scared the ever-loving s*** out of me when I was 7.

Almost makes me wish they would remake this game in HD. The Well and the Shadow Temple could actually be really creepy.

Also, speaking more recently....am I the only person who can easily freak himself out while playing Gary's Mod or a similar in-engine sandbox thing? Something about being alone in an empty map puts me on edge sometimes.

As a kid:

Metroid Prime 1 and 2: the metroid labs. God, those were creepy.

Paper Mario: TTYD. The Tower of Riddles beind the Thousand Year Door.

The ambiance was unsettling, and I played it in the dark, home alone, while it was raining. 0_o

Nowadays:

Dead Space 2 demo: HOLYCRAPHOLYCRAPHOLYCRAPWHATISTHATOMGOMGOMG!!!!!1!!!!!!??!?!!!!1!!!111!!!!one!!!!

Heavy Rain: Even watching youtobe videos, I was kinda freaked out by the Doctor fight.

There a are a few games where I was on the edge the entire time. For example Dead Space or Resident Evil Remake (especially when the hunters start appearing).

Two scares that I remember fairly well were from F.E.A.R.:

- One is when you go down a set of stairs and when you turn around the girl is staring right at you;

- The other is near the end of the game where a corpse gets sent flying into a glass pane in front of you. Made me unload a clip until I realized it was already dead.

Another really evil one was from REmake: the dogs don't appear where they used to appear in the original, so you go through that zone waiting for them to pop up and nothing. Then, after you go through that zone a few times, they end up jumping the same way and it gets you again...

Hmm... well if I have the volume too loud, pretty much any game with guns can make me jump, but it's surprising, not scary. Shadow of Chernobyl was a little scary in the underground parts, but I didn't really like the game. It just made me feel depressed whenever I played it. I played the demo of amnesia and got pretty scared, don't really want to buy the game right now though because I already have so many games.

The alien sidequest in Majora creeped me out a bit, but mostly because it was really hard and I was panicking the whole time.

These days, The Penumbra games made me too scared to Continue at times, and Silent Hill: Homecoming was the same, I haven't finished that for this reason, but back in the day, Tomb Raider 3 and Resident Evil 3 Scared me, in Tomb Raider's case there was always the sense of Dread, like there was something that was just around the corner that i couldn't see but was gonna eat me when I went around it.

In Resident Evil 3's case, it was the distant screams and Moans that got me frightened, I always imagined more Zombies entering the area and overpowering me, like I had No safe place to hide.

Resident Evil, System Shock 2, Clive Barker's Undying, Dead Space, Amnesia The Dark Descent, Penumbra series, Silent Hill series. That's it. Quite a lot actually, but there are many others too that I never find scary.

Dead Space has only been able to scare me, that's why I only ended the game when I came to know that a sequel is in the making. Otherwise I had decided to stop playing.
