I've noticed the MMO genre isn't a favored genre here, mostly due to those absurd stories about World Of Warcraft causing people to starve themselves to death, ect. So my question is, has anyone ever played, or still plays or looking forward to a particular MMO? Be it WOW, the upcoming ABP, FF14, SWKOR, or any current MMOs. What's your thoughts towards them? What do they offer apart from level grinding ect, that other genres don't?

-Edit-

My fav MMOs are Ragnarok Online, Star Wars Galaxys, City Of Heroes / Villlains. :)

Uh? No its just Console owners who dont really get to play them bashing them. I played WOW and i loved it i have also played loads of free random ones etc etc.

To answer your questions.

Looking forward to the next Final Fantasy MMORPG and the Warhammer 40000 MMORPG

What do they offer apart from Level Grinding?

Teamwork, challenge, social interaction, item collection, crafting, end game 1st kills on servers or world.

I've played MMOs since Ultima Online but I won't play one again until a truly refreshing MMO comes out.

Plenty of MMOs. None have had me hooked, too many catches. EVE Online though was the best, as quite frankly there is nothing out there that does a virtual world governed by players as it does. Pity the amount of commitment involved killed it for me. Others like AoC, WoW, Aion, Anarchy Online had their catches, Planetside was enjoyable while it lasted.

Well, I have played a bunch of mmorpgs like Runescape, Tales of Pirates, Knights online, WoW and I can say those games take alot of your time. Now, for me they get boring after a while and I retire after that. As for the story, if they make an original story it is ok because they can expand it in their own universe but games like Warcraft in my opinion shouldn't be adapted into a mmorpg; for me, the events of Burning Crusade and Wotlk didn't happen but well, that's Blizzard's universe.

They give the most value for money of any game. They good just to play with/talk to friends etc. Lots of teamwork and memories. Meet some cool people. Really the game itself is just one part of the deal and you can spend hundreds of hours not playing, just having a snazzy msn. I'd say its worth it to play at least on of the decent ones.

JONO51

True. Traversing lands with a group of your mates can be an unforgettable experience (if the MMO is good). I really enjoy the social / chat part of MMOs too.

Played WoW and WAR, WAR was totally forgettable, but WoW is one of the greatest games I've ever played. I'm really looking forward to Blizzard's next MMO, I'm positive it'll be "The Next Step" in MMO gaming.

I still play WoW, I know why people over react to it so much though because I see people ingame that put way too much time into it. Some of my friends advance a lot faster and leave me behind and then patronise me for having other interests :|. Its still pretty much the only game I play on my pc which is a shame really, but I do enjoy my consoles :P.

Anyway I have been playing MMO's for about 10 years now and my advice is remember at all times that one day the character you are leveling will be gone, treat people like people and make friends because this is what the genre is about and avoid the free to play ones because they are in my experience a giant scam that will try and rob you down the road. Oh and don't just play one game!!!! I cannot stress this enough, variety is the spice of life.

I lost a lot of time to WoW.... oh how I wish I could have that time back..... the time I invested into WoW... I could have learned to speak another language. I don't regret playing the game, just how much I played it. So glad I got away from it.

I have played Ultima Online, WoW, The Conan MMO, FFXI, Warhammer & Champions Online.... and a couple I don't remember the name of. I'm staying away from MMO's in the forseeable future..... except for SWTOR.... I'm definately getting it.

If only more people lived by this philosphy :( Seriously, there are too many elitist jerks in WoW in higher tier content, which initially turned me off to the game. Overall though, there are a lot of good interactions to be had in the end though

I used to play Phantasy Star Universe for the PC until they closed the servers down about a month ago. I also played FFXI, but money got tight so I'm off the wagon for a little while. Once in a while I'll get back on Phantasy Star Online, just for fun.

I paid for the lifetime of Star Trek online which I no longer play. I have played SWG did not care for it. I played Maplestory for awhile but the grinding killed it for me. I did not like WoW. I have however been enjoying Leagues of Legends.

I haven't played too much. A bit of LOTR online, FFXI, WAR and WoW.

In the end though it's WoW I always return to when I'm hungry for some mmo.

I've played: EQ1(Best oldschool one hands-down), Eq2(Best current gen now), Vangaurd, Linegae 2, Age of Conan, Warhammer Online, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy 11,. That's all that comes to mind now. I'm avid MMORPG player started when I was like 10 with EQ. They're great games and I'm currently playing WoW with friends (Considered imo one of the worst current MMO's)

I played WoW for about 30 levels until I realized I wasn't having fun. I wish I had liked it, I have a lot of friends who love it :(. I am, however, eagerly awaiting ToR.

Speaking as someone who used to be an avid WoW player, the reason you don't hear from people who play mmos very often on the forums is because if they're still playing it, then they're probably doing that instead. Looking back now, it seems like it was all a complete waste of time when the fun to grind ratio is taken into account. So no, I have no interest in anything mmo related anymore.

I used to play FFXI till it pretty much died out, then I bought WoW. I stopped at Burning Crusade because I realized that Blizzard has a vendetta against all hunters. It's like they go out of their way to power everyone else up to the point that we become worthless. Rogues have a skill that can completely negate a trap? WTF is going on? :| Never bothered to buy WotLK. Then I tried Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. While the PVP was great, the game was a buggy mess and even graphically it felt unfinished with some things looking great and others looking atrocious. Then I played champions online. Character creator aside, the game is just too empty. There is nothing to do. All you have is the grind and the arena battles which get boring real quick. Then comes the fact that the skills aren't balanced. Everyone ends up getting the same skills because if you try to make a unique character you will constantly get man-handled in PvP.

So true! Hunter nerfing, imba druids and everyone else getting Buff aside, I realized that every time I logged onto WoW, I spent 90% of my time sitting in Ogrimmar calling out "LF Raid group" while waiting for my BG/Arena to pop so I could grind some honor for some new gear. The game simply ceased to be fun. It felt more like work rather than play.

I've played a few. I played the World of Warcraft trial and I thought it was good but not good enough to pay fifteen dollars a month for. I use to subscribe to City of Heroes. Now I had a great deal of fun with that game. I'd have kept going if my friends played it to. But as it is the only MMO any of my friends play is WoW.

I tried Runescape and Fuzion Fall(Yes, laugh at me) since they were free. I found both of them pretty dull and stopped playing after like the first day. I tried the demo for Phantasy Star Universe on the 360. I thought the combat was kinda dull.

My main complaint with MMOs is that the combat systems generally aren't all that fun, fast, smooth or excited as most any other genres like action adventure and shooters and the graphics and animation generally aren't on par with other genres either. And the subscription fees are ridiculous. I'm not paying fifteen dollars a month just to play one game.

Play WoW pretty regularly, (10 80's only 3 of em geared though, way to easy to level in the game now) and cleared all content up to LK 25 HM's. Gave Warhammer a good run aswell, but the player base just dissapeared, shame really it had some good potential.

Played PSU on the 360 and PS: O and PSO: BB aswell.

Played MapleStory for about 2 years and wasted about $200 on NX cash before realizing the game was boring and a waste of time. I still occasionally get on every now and then though.

Played a lot of mmos, never for more than a few weeks, it was always the same grinding. I play video games for fun, grinding isn't fun the end result of grinding is fun but Is spend more time grinding than having fun with the end result. So I might as well spend my time on a offline game thats actually fun all the way through.
