At Nintendo's E3 press conference, very little of it was devoted to their big games: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Mario Galaxy, and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. And what's more, most of the conference focused on games that catered to the casual market.

The Wii is selling very well now. Nintendo has found a way to mass profits, and they took it: the casual and non-gamer market. But in doing so, do you think they have abandoned who got them there in the first place: the hardcore gamer?

No, Nintendo is giving Hardcore gamers exactly what they need. More reading, more writing, more math, and more exercise.

Just look at this "Hardcore Gamer's" report card. :D

bwahahaha.

And to answer the TC. No they haven't abandoned them they have just made them less of a prioity. In 1-2 years time we will se fewer and fewer hardcore games on the system due to 3rd parties not being able to sell "normal" games on the system.

There's no doubt that casuals are buying the Wii like crazy. But it remains to be seen how long this momentum will last. A year from now, will the novelty of having a new control scheme have worn off? Will people eventually grow tired of Brain Age, Wii Sports, and cooking/fitness simulators? Once all the soccer moms have gotten one for their 2.3 children, I have a feeling the 360 and the PS3 will pull ahead. It's only a matter of time.

No, they've not abandoned them. That's clear from the huge amount of hardcore games they have in development. What they have done however, is put them to the side. It doesn't mean there won't be hardcore games, it jsut means they won't the in the spotlight as much as things like Brain Training or this new Wii Fit. From their conference it's pretty easy to see why. These games are a lot more profitable and more importantly need the advertising.

Hardcore games don't need as much advertising because the people that play them are avid game players, and will find these games, rather then wait for them to be shown. Wheras non-gamers obviously aren't going to know about these new "non-games" like Brain Training, unless it's shown to them in adverts and marketing campaigns. I can't say I'm happy with this new priority, but whatever, as long as they keep the great first party games coming out, I'll buy them, but I think I might as well get an Xbox 360 for third party games. Last gen I only had a GC and therefore missed out on a lot of games, so it'd be stupid to do that again.

The Wii was designed to boost the failing gamer market in japan, with something completely different that every noob and his dog can play.

Hardcore gamers want their franchises to have polished core game mechanics and differ from other games, not make one beloved original franchise like a million others out there buy completly changing its genre.

I'm seriously starting to think so.

A Zelda here and a Metroid there just isn't enough anymore.
SSBB will be the last of the series so it's not like it matters.

Given that the crown jewel of Nintendo's E3 was a glorified bathroom scale and excercise DVD, I'd say YES.

I would disagree, only a little piece of Nintendo is concentrating on them. This little piece seems to pump out about one innovate title for them year, what's the big deal?

imho it boils down to this. are they making fun games and are more fun games going to come in the future? yes they are. im looking foreward to the big 3, BWII, kart, no more heros and a few others. i dont care if its "hardcore", "casual" or "kiddy". if its good then i want it.

They haven't forgotten the hardcore gamer, in spite of what the press conference may have made it seem like. Nintendo has simply reached out to casual and non-gamers like no company before. It's understandable that might make it seem like NIntendo is abandoning the hardcore gamer, but the multitude of titles speaks for itself. Nintendo still values the hardcore market and does not intend to give it up.

Wasn't E3 journalists only? I would think that showing the "non-hardcore" stuff would get them more free mainstream advertising. They did announce dates for their games. Isn't there other shows that invite gamers that would be better suited for the announcement of the "hardcore" games? All three companies were catering to the audience in attendance, hence the "dry" presentations.

I have a hard time seeing your argument, considering the announcements they made: 32-player online MoH, Mario Kart with more players than ever before online, Brawl and Galaxy got release dates, et cetera. Consider this: the Balance Board is going to bring in everyone. Yeah it starts with a fitness game, but eventually you'll see real games making use of it.

The lack of third party support put them in third place. Microsoft andSony catered to the hardcore and yet they didn't take third.

They haven't abandoned the hardcore. They are still making the same hardcore franchises as before. It is just now they are also making casual games, to attract people. As stated above hardcore gamers will find the games anyways and that e3 was all journalists so they had to try to advertise to the market.

Also if you think about it. 3rd party developers put games on where the numbers are. In appealing to the casual and non-gaming community it boosts sales which will also boost 3rd party support.

"Nintendo may be reaching out to casual players and basing its new system on things like Wii Sports and Wii Fit, but the fact of the matter is that the company is still all about the gamer, and all about the games, and Super Mario Galaxy is pure living proof of that."

From IGN's Super Mario Galaxy preview.

In other words, they aren't "abandoning the hardcore gamer."

Shinobishyguy

YES

galaxy looks childish and too easy, and the kind of game where you'll probably reach 25 lives before you die once

metroid 3, nintendo said they listen to customers, not on this one, the lack of multiplayer (i hope) will kill that game
metroid 3 is the complete opposite of what makes a perfect game for everybody
* perfect game : easy to learn + hard to master
* metroid 3 : easy to learn + easy/medium to master + hard to stay alive (at hard difficulty)
thats the only thing they made for hardcore gamers to have a good feeling about that game, some high difficulty
