so many games have tried and failed, pushed on by ps3 owners or fans of other titles on the 360 and they never succeed. it seems like so much effort has gone into killing it that it's reputation is too strong now. almost as though trying to be a halo killer is more likely to hurt a game than to help it.

is halo unkillable now because of all the failed hype for other games?

is it the fidel castro of video games? eventually you just have to leave it alone and let it die of natural causes? (especially since so many claim it's flawed?)

The industry has already moved on to Call of Duty style controls, Halo is slowly slipping into the past.

The term "halo-killer" proves that it's popular to hate Halo.. The term is silly and needs to end. No game can "kill" another game, and people should stop comparing 9 out of 10 shooters with Halo. It doesn't make sense.

it's popular to hate it, i agree. but every game still gets thrown against it. and none of them get remembered as a halo-killer. most of them get remembered for not being a halo-killer. and this in turns hurts their reputation. even trying to kill halo is bad for a games lifespan. seems better to just sneak past the giant then to try and fight it.

Very true, and also a reason why I think the term is silly. It doesn't even make any sense. Someone define the term for me..does a game need to better? I think alot of games are better. Does a game need to sell more? There are games that sold more.. Does it need to be more popular? Look at WoW.. I seriously don't even know why it's still around to be honest.

Why does a game have to 'kill' another game to be respected now? Look at World of Warcraft, it does nothing that other games weren't doing for years, however rather than focusing on trying to do something new and intuitive to 'kill' it's competition, it focuses on doing the norm very, very well. If FPS games stopped trying to 'kill' other games with new initiatives and control schemes and focused on making a unique, well-tuned game, I think the industry could breath a sigh of releif.

On another note, it's a very barbaric nature we have when we view games, that the current king has to be 'killed' by his usurper before someone else can take the throne... No sharing the top spot in our eyes ;)

The all "x-thing-killer" is nonsense.

Halo is still the most popular FPS out there. And? That has not stopped Resistance 2, Killzone 2, WaW, CoD4 from being excellent FPS.

And not only about gaming.

I see things some gadget being called "iPhone killers", when they will never EVER be as popular as it. And? That does not stop them from being very cool gadgets, and gadgets that some people will like more than the iPhone anyways.

call of duty 4 was a refreshing feel from the past games which were just the same thing, world war games, the atmosphere of call of duty 4 was awesome, and i defy you to find me another game where you stumble down a crumbling street after a nuke was dropped to take a first person control of a soldiers last breath, can you find me a game that does that? thats the innovation, innovation does not always refer to mechanics, it does not always refer to a new story, it refer's to doing something which has never been done before in a game

well in fear you controlled the character while a nuclear explosion was coming towards you, i'd say it had the cinematic feel cod had too(with much better ai). cod4 was great though and while not innovative the online was the most addictive online (on consoles) since halo, and that's quite an achievement.

i wasnt talking about crawling mechanics -___- i was talking about the experience of taking control of a soldier who is suffering from radiation as he stumbles back and forth with blurry vision until he finally falls to the ground and breathes his last breath

Whenever something is very popular, there's always a large group of haters. Halo, SpongeBob, iPhone, you name it. In the end, they aren't killed, and the product or franchise is not nearly as popular. But haters always wish for a ?killer? to these vastly popular things, and while they will inevitably die out one day, they aren't ?killed? so easily. I would expect the trend to continue, maybe even with cod killer hyped games.

no, but at the same time there hadn't been a game in the Zelda series that used a Magical Harp to travel through time yet I doubt anyone would call that 'innovative'.

seriously.... halo perfected the space age shooter type thing, but story shooters, modern shooters, arcady shooters, ALL of them can be more fun, but won't hurt halo.

Of course. It's out of jealousy, most likely. Some people don't like Halo, and I'm cool with that, but the hate for Halo usually doesn't come from actually trying and disliking the game but actually out of fanboyish motives. ThePS3 has some good quality shooters, but you're right, none have reached the success of Halo 3 in terms of sales, reviews, or just plain ol' popularity. Across the board, Halo has claimed its victory.

edit: i'd like to note that i'm not calling halo a bad game, i just happen to think its the most overrated fps ever mainly because all bungie really did was make a so-so fps that controlled halfway decently. more than anything i think it got popular because of everything BUT the game itself.

Halo just has a great following, backed up by fantastic multiplayer. I think games have come out that look better, or even play better, but Halo just has that quality that keeps players coming back.

halo 3 has co-op, online split screen, a map creator, very deep rank systeam, bungie updates the playlists every week

what does KZ2 have? a single player and a multiplayerthat you can get all the medals in really fast, thats it and you cant even play split screen

the term "halo killer" shouldn't even exist. there will never be a FPS that can "kill" the halo series because it has a huge fanbase around it.

the only severe case in here is you trying to act like an adult

btw, all that stuff that halo is so praised for has been done for quite a while already. level creator? doom and quake say hello. split screen mp, didn't perfect dark have 4 player split screen? didnt goldeneye as well? very deep ranking system? well every FPS claims this.
I was the one saying Halo wasn't innovative
but then again, It seems like I'm talking to a literal fourteen year old, so it doesn't really matter.

The industry has already moved on to Call of Duty style controls, Halo is slowly slipping into the past.DarkGamer007

id agree with this, halo's style of gaming is very old fashioned now a days, no one wants another basic shooter, they want something with some sort of innovation

 Call of Duty is far from innovative, Call of Duty's mechanics are just as old, if not older than some of Halo's mechanics. :|

Exactly, Call of Duty and Halo are just two dogs barking up the same tree. They are both excellent games, but they are both using and polishing existing mechanics to make their games work. Only the original Halo came close to really doing anything new.

my bad lol

calling me a 14 year old however, not exactly an exercise in maturity. and calling someone else a 14 year old doesn't help with you trying to act all big and tough by calling me son.

i think we both know that the average 14 year old probably wouldn't know much about the original doom, quake, perfect dark or goldeneye.
