If you think Halo, Killzone, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Half-Life, Stalker, Crysis, and Resistance are the same rehashed games with different titles: You're doing it all wrong.

Yeah i agree, there's only such a virtual human can do, Crysis took care of that by making him do the impossible and modern war games are just bad, mostly MW2 but generally speaking what else can you do with a gun and a knife? Nothing..... so why bother trying to squeeze more out of something and end up ruining it?

I think the FPS genre has a lot of potential. the problem is so many just focus on multiplayer it is annoying. If someone made a long FPS, that had platforming, adventure, RPG, and action elements, it would be nothing other than awesome.

3) 1st Person cover system (Killzone 2)

4) Weapon attachments (CoD)

7) Nanosuits that can change gameplay on the fly (Crysis)

8 ) Larger number of players per match (MAG)

9) Match Recording (Halo 3')

10) Forced team co-op (L4D)

11) HUD-less health meter (Gears, but FPS do it now)

12) Instant kill Melee (CoD)

13) Fully Destructable environments (Bad Company)

and probably many others. These may not be "new" ideas, but they sure have been different approtches to them.

I didn't say they were rehashes, but I played ODST and MW2, and they were just like their predecessors were.

Where you expecting dragons and giant squids in the game? Obviously the game is going to be similar to it's predacessors. It goes back to the old saying, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it".

The way it was implemented in MW2 was bad, but the idea is far from bad. People complain about CoD, and how the good players only get better as they gain killstreaks, leaving the slightly less skilled players in the dust. The idea of deathstreaks, in this sense, works to help balance that out. Only problem is that Activision didn't beta test.

So yes, Deathstreaks are a new idea that could be used to better a game.

What more innovation can be squeezed from the FPS? The fundamentals are already there. Why re-invent the wheel? Does everything need to be under the guide of constant improvement and innovation?

The FPS is fine as it is.

In my opinion, death streaks should be removed from all FPS'es, especially if they're aimed to be competitive. Being rewarded for being horrible at a game is a very bad concept. You should learn how to play properly, without having to get aided by kill streaks. They should at the very least be removed in tournaments and hardcore modes. All games that have death streaks should also have the option to completely turn them off. I'm not about to get owned by a guy that's zero kills and eight deaths because he gets REWARDED for sucking, and I get punished for being good when he comes out with his health boost.

Honestly I agree. I feel the same way about Dragon Quest, but I see other posters always attacking it saying it is archaic and bare bones. I'm just trying to understand why so many people attack RPGs for finding a zone and sticking with it, but I don't see hardly anyone doing that with the FPS genre. :?

JRPG are becoming a niche market. FPS are the main market today. If you are looking for any sort of logic in this mess you won't find any. The majority will ignore its flaws and point out the flaws in others.

I find FPS's focus too much on MP. It would be nice if they invented some kind of new game mode. For example i was playing jedi acadamy yesterday, and there was this one mission where you had to fight a Rancor, but you could not hurt it. So you ended up running away from it for for the entire mission(untill you find a way to kill it) but at the same time your fighting a bunch of dark jedi, who happen to be fight the Rancor too (rancor ended up eating ALOT of em, soemtimes thanks to me). So the entire mission actually felt like it could be some sort of unique online mode. Imagine that in an FPS.

Yea it sounds similar, but it wasn't intentional. However, I was thinking of something a little more FPSish than Metroid.

I believe physics based gameplay and truly fully destructible enviroments are the future of the FPS, but we probably won't see games like this until the next round of consoles.

A sequel is supposed to build on from the original. Not turn into a completely different experience. Hence why it's a sequel. Otherwise it should just be a completely different game.

I couldn't agree more with you. FPSs here are "teh awesome" but RPG are "teh lame and old" is all you get here. It's ok for one genre to be "fine as it is" but the other genre is "archaic and old, I wan't something new waah". The hypocrisy can be strong sometimes.

So why should players who are better get rewarded with better equipment? Makes no sense. Killstreaks are just as bad as Deathstreaks in almost every way. If someone is slightly better than me, why should my chances of killing him be reduced? It works both ways. Getting cash in Counter Strike is another good example. Why should the good players get rewarded with better equipment, if they are already better players?

I like fps but they are stale to me these days..Im not really playing much of anything right now. BUT im waiting to get some money together to buy 3D Dot Game Heroes and LBP2. Thats what im wanting..AND maybe GT5.."maybe"..

Im actually saving up money to get a nice laptop and do some "lite" gaming on it and mostly to have all my data with me 24/7...Still love consoles, but IVE hit a brick wall with everything right now.

The last serious inovation in FPS's was the Squad System back with BF2. virtually everything else has been just minor changes.

10) Forced team co-op (L4D)

11) HUD-less health meter (Gears, but FPS do it now)

12) Instant kill Melee (CoD)

13) Fully Destructable environments (Bad Company)

and probably many others. These may not be "new" ideas, but they sure have been different approtches to them.

I'm pretty sure Bad Company had weighted controls to a degree before killzone did. (Correct me if i'm wrong however). And Halo also had instant kill Melee back in Halo 1 (Though you had to hit them in the back)

I see people bashing RPGs for not having any innovation these days, but what about FPSs? JRPGs like FFXIII and TWEWY have found new and good ways to play in their genres, but what has FPSs done lately that's fresh?

Red Faction ( 2? ) had a destructable enviroment too. Not as much as Bad Company, but still, Bad Company isn't completely destructable either.

I personally like the first person perspective from an immersion standpoint. But, the shooter aspect is getting tired to me for most games. I feel there should be a lot more focus on action outside of shooting to make the most out of the first person perspective, but not all gameplay elements translate well to the limited view. Things like platforming kind of stink in first person games for the most part. But I like hand to hand fighting mechanics when done well. Also, I would like to see more first person games not be a floating camera, but giving you a whole body that's really there. I hate it when you look down and don't have any feet.

death streaks?

The last innovative FPS I played was Stalker.

Same here. Most FPS nowadays is a rewash of old things.

Acc. to me I think still there is a lot in need to do with FPS Genre......

Bioshock,Portal,MW,Halo 3,Resis,BC has bought us something new.......Though I agree that many games have done something new in Multiplayer dept. not in SP campaign....

I hope still this is not the end of FPS......Only time will tell.

Big hopes on VAVLE,GG and BUNGIE

CHEERS!

The console FPS? Yes. It's stuck in neutral at this point. That said we've had some fun attempts, and progressive titles. Portal, Left 4 Dead, Crysis, Mirror's Edge, Stalker all ended up being refreshing, different, or at the least progressive with what they were doing. That's not to say the more safe games haven't been fun as I do think Halo Reach will be fun, and I am certainly interested to see what Valve has in store with Half Life 2: Episode 3(20 bucks says someone throws a hissy fit because I put Half Life in this type of category), but they all seem to be doing a lot of things already done, or just more or less refining things.

Frankly the point and shoot formula in single player FPS games are getting a little stale. Brothers in Arms series and Half Life series are a great example at how FPS games can be innovative (the command system in BIA, and the gravity gun/portal gun in HL)

when an FPS games comes out i dont expect it to re-invent the genre... I just expect the game to have a good sp campaign & a great mp (unless its a sp game only)... Obviously bringing in a couple of fresh ideas is always a plus...
