in all honesty? i mean did god of war 3 or infamous come out and all of a sudden the PS3 was hard to find? i remember uncharted 2 came out and not only did it not sale systems but it didnt exactly sale like crazy itself.

i mean.the wii has had several games that sold the system. wii sports, wii fit, new mario wii. these games released then all of a sudden wii's were hard to find.

when the 360 came out, it sold out everywhere because of perfect dark zero of all things before people realized that call of duty 2 and PGR3 was the reason to actually have it. then gears sold systems, then halo 3, now halo reach has again emptied gamestop.

so what exactly is the PS3 killer app again?

PS3's Killer App is most likely GT5.

Metal Gear Solid 4 did.

GT5 will harass the word term we know as sales. If you ever looked for a PlayStation massive system seller, look for Gran Turismo 5.

Well it used to be the final fantasy series in the old days. Guess the closest now would be gt5.

GT5 is nothing like GTPSP. Hot Shot golf is different as well, but I'm not sure if LBP, Modnation Racers, and Mlb the show are counted as exclusives.

This, pretty much. I imagine every awesome release has driven sales of the system, but none had that giant push of a Halo game. That makes sense, considering the varied nature of Sony's lineup, the userbase is very varied as well. The Xbox brand is built on Halo, and Halo is the driving force for both its unit sales and live subscriptions. Sony has never relied upon one title in such a manner.

What game is hard to find after its release? The only games I can think of trying to find and having a hard time were Valkyria Chronicles and Demon's Souls, but even then I only had to wait until new shipments came in.

the PS3 reminds me of the PS2. when the PS2 came out the games were pretty lackluster. the best launch game was probably SSX. the PS3 launch was the same thing. the game that really sold the APS3 was metal gear solid 2 and gran turismo 3. i am wondering if GT5 will make the same impact since there is so much competition now with forza, grid, and need for speed.

depends on where you live i would think. i mean in a city with 800,000 people i would think you could find them at the store within a week. but most people live in smaller towns outside of those big cities. i havent seen a modern warfare 2 in 6 months!

Sales of the PS3 doubled (from 200,000 to 400,000 IIRC) when MGSIV was released.

in my circles

the MGS4 was a big reason some friends bought the system.

the next big one i remember was the 100 dollar price drop, now virtually everyone i know has a PS3.

I got a PS3 for KZ2, wasn't interested before then. But your point would suggest to me that Sony is good at keeping retailers in stock, high shipping.

the mgs4 bundle a few days after launch was extremely hard to find. luckily I got my mgs4 bundle on midnight release so I didn't have to deal with the prices sky-rocketing on ebay, but it was the last PS3 sku to offer backwards compatibility so they pretty much sold like hotcakes (at a high price mind you). Altho a PS3 wasn't hard to find, the MGS4 bundle certainly was.

so in a sense, he is correct, but overall it probably didn't sell too many stand-alone PS3s.

Problem is Uncharted: Drake Fortune was a tech wonder, just beautiful and with an amazing gameplay. But since the story wasn't exacly oscar winning it got alot of bad press over that. I remember reading on magazines "king of cliche" as a way to introduce the game, and also the "Gears of War" in the jungle didn't help. I have Gears 1 for PC and as far as Gameplay goes i much prefer Uncharted, the animations alone are superior IMO, maybe because its kinda weird see such a big fella roll on the ground with that huge armor. Then if you consider for example Uncharted 2 and Gears 2, i don't think theres any doubt in anyones mind that U2>Gears2 but still, Uncharted 2 sold like 3 million compared with the 5 million Gears 2 sold (not sure about the numbers, but i know it was more). That alone just shows you how can the press shift the balance on sales, i don't think anyone will ever take Uncharted too serious, and if it wasn't for the fact U2 being the best looking game on consoles you wouldn't hear so much about it.

Considering that we're talking about SYSTEM SELLERS, and not individual game availability... MGS4 most definitely was a system seller. It was bundled with the last of the BC PS3's, and it took me about a month of waiting/searching for the bundle before I found one to buy. @TC: The Wii didn't really need a game to help sell out systems, but Nintendo does have some the most dedicated followers in the industry. So, seeing the Wii sell out for Mario is a no-brainer. As for the 360... Halo 3 and Halo: Reach were/are bundled in with the 360, special edition 360's at that even if it's only the outside that's "special." We could also argue that the re-vamping of the system has helped clear the shelves more than Halo: Reach. I'm only just now actually seeing them at stores. I believe if Sony had bundled the PS3 with more games like GOW3 or Infamous, you could say that each system has an equal number of "system sellers."

MGS4 is probably the closest thing it's had to a system seller. I can definitely see GT5 being one, though.

According to NPD it had a big impact on PS3 sales. Now it wasn't Halo but what is. It did do what your question asked though as it moved sytems.

GOW3, MGS4 were my main reason for getting my PS3, but i found there are alot of nice games too, GT5, NGS2, U2 ..etc.

Edit: x360 fans always say the system keeps selling coz of the overall library, the Ps3 now also a great library on its own, and with 2011, its overall library will be unbeatable.

The biggest system seller on the PS3 so far was definitely MGSIV. Smoked any exclusive game before and many after in sales. GT5 might replace it as the biggest system seller depending on whether Europe likes the new changes or not.

Unlike the 360 which turns it's whole focus to 1 or 2 games Halo and Gears, the PS3 does it with GT5, KZ2,3, Uncharted 1, 2, Resistance 1,2,3, Demon's SOuls, God of War III, Valkryia Chronicles, Motorstorm, Socom, Warhawk, Wipeout etc etc. Much better tactic no?

When MGS 4 released it boosted sales by about 1.5 million consoles. God of War 3 had a little smaller affect. GT 5 will have an affect. With the 360 It's Halo and Gears of War games that boost it's sales. With PS3 it's many exclusives: God of War 3 , MGS 4, Killzone 2, Gran Tourismo 5, Uncharted, The Last Guardian, Demon's Souls etc. It's mostly Halo fanaticism that sales 360s.

this is why i wasnt gonna bother asking. the only game that came out that helped the PS3 in an actual sales boost is metal gear but none of you even have the numbers right. no other PS3 game has boosted system sales. instead, cows are just naming off exclusives.

when someone actually comes into the thread with actual evidence that the PS3 jumped in sales because a game released on it, then i guess the answer is no.

i got this from wikipedia

''According to Enterbrain, Guns of the Patriots sold 476,334 copies in its first four days on sale in Japan, which includes copies bundled with the PlayStation 3, and caused a boost in PlayStation 3 sales.[33] The PS3, which at the time sold about 10,000 units in a given week, went on to sell 77,208 units in the game's debut week.[33] As of July 9, 2008, the game has sold 576,437 copies in Japan.[34] It is the 11th best-selling game of Japan in 2008, selling 686,254 copies.[35] According to Chart-Track, the game is the second fastest-selling PlayStation 3 title in the United Kingdom after Grand Theft Auto IV and was below Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty's opening weekend figure by 14,000 copies recorded in 2002; the sales of the PlayStation 3 increased by a "minimal" seven percent over the opening weekend.[36] Konami has reported that MGS4 sold over one million copies across Europe in its first week, with 25,000 limited-edition copies "snapped up almost immediately".[37] In the United States, MGS4 was the best-selling game in June 2008 selling 774,600 copies (nearly one million if the number of copies bundled with the PS3 were included), causing PS3 sales to double over the previous month, according to the NPD Group.[38] As of June 30, 2008, the game had shipped over 3 million copies worldwide.[39] As of August 2009, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots has sold 5 million copies, making it the best selling PlayStation 3 exclusive game and second overall to Grand Theft Auto IV.[''40]

thank you VADER993. finally. the PS3 only sold 10,000 copies a week til metal gear came out? good lord. it had nowhere to go but up. uncharted 2 and god of war 3 had bigger releases and the sales didnt pick up at all til the slim came out. i do not understand cow logic. hype a game to death while bashing other systems games and then do not go buy either one.

[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"][QUOTE="Renzokucant"]uncharted 2, resistance 2, killzone 2, god of war 3, infamous, demon's souls, final fantasy XIII, little big planet just to name a few that I own, but things in japan sell ps3's alot better that we bever know about, like white knight chronicles that came out 3 years ago there and wkc2 that just came out over thereRenzokucant
there's a difference between system sellers and exclusives... and final fantasy XIII is on the 360 as well.

they were all huge in sales and if i didnt have a ps3 i woulda bought one for any of those games...er go.. system seller.. and ffxiii was superior on the ps3 and its widely documented that not only did people buy it more on the ps3, but sales for the ps3 went up at the time of this games release.. sooooo yea.

still, games that sell well =/= games that make hardware sells.
