With so many games getting good reviews solely based on gaming companies purchasing them by paying the website to advertise their ads for it, its hard to get a descent review nowadays. This is why i stopped listening to reviews, and focused solely on gameplay footage and asking myself "will i enjoy this?"

So have you?

FF13!! I knew it was going to be bad after all the Japanese user reviews on different sites complaining about its linearity and other stuff. But famitsu gave this game such a good score and it was generally well accepted by western media too and then when I played it I couldn't actually believe how bad the game was. It was at this point that I stopped caring about reviews that much and then I found Yakuza, a really good series that generally gets below average scores despite having so many redeeming features compared to bullcrap like FF13.

If you buy games based on reviews you fail. I use reviews to own console plebs and to help sway me when I'm on the fence about a game.

I've never been forced to perform sexual acts to buy a video game. And neither should anyone else. Unless it was a lady. Then I may consider it.

Nah, not anymore. Now I look through the review and see what they find good about the gameplay and what's bad. Ex. Chances are I wouldn't purchase a game like Shogun because even though it's highly-rated, a review might say it won't covert any non-RTS fans. So I won't buy it then.

Reviews don't really do anything in making decisions for me

Its only a rough guide of what someone else thought

Actually playing the game demo helps me more

Still though nothing beats going to the game store with nothing in mind and just using the back of the box for your next game

Research like... I don't know... read reviews? I love how people act all cool like "Nah, I don't listen to opinions. I do research!" when anything you might read or hear about a game is an opinion. And don't tell me all you people rent all games before you buy them. Of course do reviews influence decisions. I usually have a pretty good idea about which games I would like but I still read reviews to see if I learn something new that could change my mind. I'm not talking about the actual score but about information on gameplay mechanics etc.

FF13. I was skeptical about this game when I heard about this game's linearity and so on, but the reviews were mostly good so I thought that it could be good. It wasn't. At least I only paid about ?25 for it. Now I have a list of certain franchises that I don't trust the reviews for as their name gives them a good review even when the game is terrible (I'm looking at you Mario Sunshine and Majora's Mask).

This.

This too.

Max Payne 3 got a lot of all the great reviews but in the end the game is more generic crap to me. If i had purchased the game based on the reviews i would have been screwed.

There are also great games that had i listened to the negative reviews i would never have purchased

Halo 2, reviewers were singing nothing but positive praises for the game.

Since then I grown wiser and just look at the games and ask my self, "dose this **** really look like it might be fun to play" and if the answer is anything along the lines of "not really" I pass on the game no matter what any reviewers say.

I give more credit to actual gamer praise (not fanboys) than anything else.

The only time I ever buy a game based off of a review is when it is a title that I'm not sure about and it gets above an 8.5. There are plenty of games that get scored over 9 that I don't buy simply because I know I wouldn't enjoy them.

I don't buy games because they have high reviews. I have played crap games that happen to have high scores but I don't blame the reviewers because my purchasing decision wasn't decided by them.

I usually go on metacritic, look at the summaries for good and bad reviews, then watch some gameplay and decide based on that. Has been working for me all the time.

Most games I bought based on reviews were good. I play games on the PC mostly. So, I prefer reviews from PC-centric sites which tend to dissect the game thoroughly.

I use reviews as part of my reserach in deciding if I want a game, but not the sole reason. And isn't the whole point of the review to give an opinion to help in deciding if you want to buy a game, see a movie, etc. I don't understand the idea that you are wrong if you read a review as part of your decision making process when that is what they are there for. REviews aren't made for ammo in system wars

They're not based on gaming companies paying for them these days IMO, I think they're far more influenced by gamers whining whenever a game gets a bad score and a reviewer tries to say something critical. As for the question, no, I realised years ago that scores are a useless metric and if you want to know how good a game is you have to read the full review from a reviewer with similar tastes and see if it fit's your tastes.

I have, and everyone one of these people listens to reviews. People are so full of crap when they say they don't. . When did people lose sight of how dumb it makes them to say they don't listen to reviews? That's the whole point, so you can get an idea or even a warning that something is terrible. If you're not listening to reviews then you're just listening to commercials, otherwise you would have no idea it even exists... unless of course you're only basing your opinion on boxart... "ooh, pretty... me buy this one now". . not making informed decisions should not be treated like a badge of honor.

Yes a couple of times. I got screwed over with Left 4 Dead, revieweres made it out to be some super amazing experience, well I thought it got boring fast and had no variety.

The missions were too short and there were only about 4 or 5 of them, and that was it. Playing with friends made the experience better, but still not enough becaise the core game wasn't very good. It was an average game at best.

Though I do hear the PC version is better because you can have mods! I saw a Luigi's Mansion mod on it and I was like "hell ya that's awesome!" but the 360 version simply isn't that good. Doesn't have enough to keep you entertained for very long, at least in my experience.

I've been screwed out of buying a game based on reviews, but never into one. I had watched WET ever since it was in development, and then it got lousy scores and I delayed in buying it for over a year. When I finally got around to it, it immediately ranked as one of my favorite games ever. Ever since then, I've trusted my own hype levels when deciding what to buy.
