This rumor from last year looks more real than ever, considering recent events. Kinect is required, movies and tv are main focus, fees are the name of the game, movie achievements.

That ain't going to happen. If the Kinect is off, how would they know? lol!! It's a completely STUPID policy that M$ just needs to delete before they make their customers more angry.

Looks like the system won't run without Kinect, kinda like how you can't play without a controller. The Kinect is another controller. This setup presents many problems in my eyes; if you drop the kinect, a kid throws it, or it just craps out, you can't play without buying another one? Doesn't look like you'll just be able to buy a cheap replacement like you can a controller (My bro bought an extra ps3 controller at a discount clothing store, it had a cord and no rumble but was like $10 LOL).

For starters stuff like this gets patented all the time, doesn't mean a company is going to be utilizing its patents in near future, they could just hold onto them for later use, in patent arsenal for future patent wars, or to license to an interesting party. The only real application I see if this is used in near future is if MS tries to implement a system to show movies the same time they're in the cinema, as it's the cinema that charges on a per person basis and that's where studios make their money during the theater run.

This patent seems to fit right in with the direction they are going. It won't be for movies that are in theaters, you won't be seeing Avengers 2 or an equivalent movie same day on xbox one. Little indie movies maybe since movie services already do that. It's just another sweetener for digital partners; you get an NFL game license but it only applies to four guys, and an extra .25 or something for every extra person. I can easily see that happening.

It's pernicious and rather draconian; doesn't seem like a lot of money but it will add up. The enforcement is what scares me, will you be penalized somehow if you point your camera at a wall, or try to hide extra people? I'm sure it will use the voice recognition to detect extra people. Big brother isn't being forced on us, we're inviting him in...
