Scroll down for the TLDR version.

I remember the year the 360 launched, back in 2005 the discussions here on this very systemwars forum. Back then I owned a PS2, Xbox, GameCube and Dreamcast(also Japanese Dreamcast). I was excited about the specs of the 360 but then came E3 2005. That's when Sony showed off the CG Killzone, Motorstorm and a few others that really looked too good to be true and they were.

This Sony hype obviously carried over into the systemwars forums. Everyone was calling the 360 the Xbox 1.5. They were saying it's not really next gen and you have to wait until PS3 if you really want to play next gen. They were saying you aren't next gen without a blu-ray player. They were saying the Cell was a monster and the 360 was just a clown show.

The point is, by the time the 360 launched, I was confused by reading these forums so I didn't even want one anymore. I decided not to buy one at launch. After launch the fanboys would post screenshots of Gran Turismo 4(a PS2 game) vs Project Gotham Racing 3(360 launch game) vs Sony E3 2005 CG games. I started to actually believe the 360 was a piece of garbage.

However, I bought an HDTV in that year's 2005 black Friday. It was a Panasonic plasma and I was excited about it of course so I was reading about it on the avs forums with other HDTV owners. The thing is after the 360 launch a lot of guys were posting there about how much they loved their 360s and posting screenshots of games running on their HDTVs. I was thinking damn, heard it's a piece of garbage but these guys either are ignorant or maybe the 360 isn't as bad as I am thinking. For sure those guys at the avs forums weren't fanboys, that I can tell you.

Anyway, in about March of 2006, I was at Best Buy and saw a 360 in stock and decided to buy it with Kameo and Project Gotham Racing 3. Went home, hooked it up and was in the Twighlight Zone. Wtf, this is a million times better than all of the last gen consoles, WTFFFFFFFFFF????????? Especially for an HDTV. Remember, back then almost everyone was still using SDTVs so it was a huge deal to move up to an HDTV. If you played the last gen consoles on an HDTV, they all looked like trash save ironically the original Xbox but it still was not even close to the 360.

Of course today everyone talks about how much of a beast the 360 was for it's time and how it competed against high end PCs. If you weren't here on these forums reading them, you have no idea. It was worse than it is now with the Xbox One X. That is why I am putting up threads trying to show people that the system is really a great improvement over the regular Xbox One S and quite frankly all home consoles including the PS4 Pro. It really is more comparable to a high end PC similarly to how the 360 was comparable to a high end PC for it's time.

TLDR Version

Back in 2005 I got hyped by rabid cows on this forum and didn't buy a 360 because I thought maybe I would be wasting my money on overhyped trash. Didn't buy a 360 at launch due to this systemwars forums basically. Then I purchased an HDTV that year, went to the AVS forums and posted there with other new HDTV owners. Many were showing off their 360 consoles on their new HDTVs so I started to wonder who was right, avs or systemwars. In March 2006 I bought a 360 in bestbuy and when I played it on my HDTV, it was shocking how much bs I had fallen for. It was a massive leap above previous consoles and was comparable to a high end PC.

Have any of you guys been completely duped by reading the ridiculous hysterical nonsense fanboys spew on this forum?

Hm, I seem to recall the 360 fanboys acting a lot like the PS4 fanboys, actually. One of the things that turned me away from that community. But either way - no, some of my favorite systems have been the "losing" ones and always have been the ones that simply had what I wanted

When I speak about the only professional console on the market the PlayStation 4 Pro, and the AAA heart stopping, chart topping, genre defining, limousine riding, innovative PS4 exclusives, everyone wants to be a part of the PlayStation universe.

nope, I look at whats available on my system, check out the trailer, look at the overall rating the game received, the price and from there make a decision. If I listened to fanboys all the time I'd miss out on a lot of good games.

I agree with @xantufrog on this, as far as I remember all during the X360 period all these forums where are the same thing that is happening now... Xbox fanboys creating performance threads until it comes to PC then they add the magical caveat card price.

Also no... When I want something I buy it. To me its the opposite I have fallen for hype and been let down a lot.

Also a GTX 1060/RX 580 is a mid range GPU. Its not a high end experience... and I would like to add dynamic resolution and 30FPS are not what high end PC's do.

Hm, that’s not how I remember the PS3 launch/buildup. E3 2006* was an embarrassment for Sony. The system was considered overpriced and pointless in most gaming forums, and nowhere near as interesting as Revolution. Sony bashing was pretty much at a high going into the next year and “PS3 has no games” would be a popular meme over the next several years. It was actually the lack of hype and price tag that helped pave the way for Xbox 360’s early success. Honestly, the first positive news I can even remember about the PS3 wasn’t until MGS4 got released, in 2008.

Those must have been some incredibly persuasive fanboys to get to you in that environment.

(Edit: * I was confusing E3 2005 for E3 2006 since it’s been a while. Either way, hype fell pretty quickly for the console.)

^This.

I'll use opinions about games to gather a general consensus to find if it's something I would enjoy or not but that is about the extent of it.

It's not your fault that you're too young to have been here and remember properly. The 2005 E3 Sony press conference was a HUGE MASSIVE success for Sony and NO ONE was laughing at them after that. People were laughing at Xbox after it. The hype Sony generated at the 2005 E3 press conference was unbelievable. Everything I wrote is absolutely true.

Now let me explain to you with facts how you're wrong. First of all Sony didn't announce a price for the PS3 in the 2005 press conference. They just showed a bunch of CG games that looked incredible for the time. Now in their 2006 press conference they showed the actual games that were running on the system and announced the price tag. That's when everyone clowned the hell out of them because they had been hyping the system for a full year after the E3 2005 conference CG and then in the 2006 conference we all found out it was BS. The 2006 press conference was when Kaz Hirai went Riiiiiiidge Raaaceer! He did that a bunch of times and everyone was like wtf, who cares. Then it was real time weapon changing and historically accurate giant enemy crabs and the $599 price tag. Sony got clowned after that for years. That is not what i'm talking about. I'm talking about the 2005 press conference that Sony had that somewhat sabotaged the 360 launch with their announcement of the new Playstation console and a bunch of BS CG movies to prove it was the real next gen machine.

Before you pretend to know what you're talking about and tell someone else they're wrong, try to know what the hell you're talking about so you don't make such a fool out of yourself.

@Xplode_games: yeah, yeah. As I mentioned in my edited post, I misremembered the E3 2005 as the E3 2006 conference. For some reason I confused the two years, it’s been a while. The rest of my post is true with the correct date (and obviously contextually it’s pretty obvious that I was thinking about E3 2006, for various reasons as you noted). It doesn’t really make a big difference; the hype fell off the PS3 very quickly, well before it launched, and the console was being dogged for years to come.

In any case, it’s silly to let hype regarding something that’s not even released greatly influence your decision making.

Xbox users have repeatedly convinced me to never buy another Xbox.

1. Bought an original Xbox when Halo 2 released to play with my brother. Finished the mediocre story and played online. My brother was rarely on so instead I was always playing with 7 year olds cussing into the mic, doing anything but helping with the objective and apparently doing my mom repeatedly (I was about 23 years old at this point). I got so sick of the user base that after a month, I sold the system and everything with it on eBay.

2. PS3 launch. I missed the small preorder window (1 hour) so I would go store to store every day after launch asking if they had any. At one game store was a total Xbox fan that was an employee. "Why do you want to waste your money on a PS3? All the games coming to that system will release on the 360. We even habe a deal going on the 360 with bundle" 12,567. I confirmed with him... "every PS3 exclusive is coming to 360 huh?" He replied with a yes. I rolled my eyes at him and walked out. Then of course all the RRoD issues started cropping up. That was a dodged bullet.

3. Microsoft made my decision easy with the X1 via the 2013 E3 reveal. Fanboys on forums being complete douche bags helped solidify that I don't want to play online with them. Then with every X1 title coming to PC there is no need for the Xbox considering I have a PS4 and Switch. I'll eventually have a PC that is powerful enough and I'm pretty patient.

Xbox is completely irrelevant for me via my experiences and witnessed history with the brand.

You need to stop taking SW so seriously. This place is a joke and half of the people posting here post shit to troll people (myself included).

Yes, it's one of the deeper action games ever created, get on it man.

Do yourself a favor and learn dodge offset right off the bat though. Game does a shitty job explaining it and it's a key to higher level play.

I've never avoided a game because of SW negativity, but I have bought into mediocre and straight up shitty games due to overwhelming praise.

I'm more careful now though, rarely buy a game that I don't end up enjoying a lot. There's a few users here who I'm on the same page with when it comes to certain genres, can basically trust their recommendations. Otherwise, nah, don't take too many opinions here seriously.

Usually I will be on the fence about something, and ill analyze the feedback and conscensus of what users say. I do the same with reviews. Ultimately its my choice but a game has to get at least 3 points for me to buy it. One point from me, one point for good reviews, one point for good critic feedback, and one point from forum discussion. That being said this is never a hard rule, and I have bought games that got shat on.

@ConanTheStoner:

So it starts slow or is the whole game a Mish mash of random camera angles? I found it difficult to get into for that reason. I recall everything moving, making any player movement difficult to pin down, if that makes sense. It gave a very random feeling impression. Is the first one worth it? Skip to the second? What I am saying is the game failed to draw me in.

... ODYSSEY. Imo I would have preferred a shorter, more compact game aka 64. It isn't that the more exploratory segments are bad; imo the better parts are the pure platforming and stressed speed platforming. There's simply TOO MUCH, I think. Too many moons to bother memorization..... Well see what the speed runners do with it.

Intro level in both games is basically an interactive cutscene. Very short, you get into the meat of the game quickly. But yes, those intro stages are a bit hard to read admittedly, the games are absolutely better from there. The games are designed for replayability though, and you'll never have to replay those sections again.

Both games are great. If you really want to get snobby about it, the first game is technically a little deeper, but both are top notch beat em ups that excel in different ways.

You haven't even tried Xbox, that's what you're really saying.

@Xplode_games: Quite the opposite actually. I played a lot of the first Xbox and even the 360 at friends home. I can't say the same for X1 because my friends switched back to PlayStation.

I listen to the fanboys all the time. If they tell me something is bad or 'flopped' I buy it immediately. The more they bash something the more likely it scares the hell out of them.

Best thing to do with System Wars is enjoy the entertainment of it and the meltdowns! Never, ever let it influence anything in real life. Fanboys have always and will always exist but just buy whatever it is you enjoy and **** everybody else. I've enjoyed the hell out of Xbox One since launch day despite PS4 curb-stomping it saleswise around the world since, well, launch day, lol. Nothing said on the boards anywhere should ever affect your opinion of the games you pay for....

Except for Star Wars Battlefront 2 - that's some epic ignorant BS and that's coming from a gigantic Star Wars fan. I'm not buying that shit.

Nope. I buy games that are interesting to ME.

Reading news or reviews are some of my deciding factors in my gaming purchases. But more importantly, Renting and Borrowing the games first to physically try out are the most important to me. That way I get to experience the games first, to see if they're actually worth purchasing.
