More than 2 years after the launch of the 360 and more than a year after the PS3's launch, neither console has seemingly been able to produce a game which runs at 1080p natively.

Ken Kutaragi once infamously stated that the PS3 would run games in 1080p at 120fps,now joking aside the two next gen consoles were supposed to usher in a new era of HD gaming,and as I've mentioned neither has truly been able to do that,and that doesn't look to be changing;

Halo 3 - Flagship 360 title and killer app, sold millions of copies within days of it's release, yet it supposedly runs at 640p.

COD4 - One of the biggest selling games of 2007 yet,as with Halo, resolution was seemingly compromised in order to keep a steady frame-rate.

Killzone 2 - Great hope of Ps3 fans and highly anticipated, yet will "only" be running at 720p and 30fps.

I'm sure there are other examples, but I chose these as these were high profile titles likely to sell consoles.

This isn't a console bashing thread,I just want to hear peoples opinons on the "HD debate" .Will consoles ever be able to run games at 1080p natively with 60fps,or is it just simply that they aren't powerful enough,is that the reason someone sticks to PC gaming or do you really care what resolution your games are running at?

well GT5 is confirmed to be running at 1080p 60fps when playing, and at 30fps when watching replays. Im not too sure about MGS4 but i also think its running at 1080p but ill have to double check that.

What's MGS 4 running at? Anyway yea this whole HD thing has been a failure so far, as no games really run at those res and have good graphics on consoles.

If the GT5 thing is true then thats cool, not sure about MGS4 but I'm pretty sure its "only" 30fps.Like I said I'm not sure if this whole thing of consoles not running games at 1080p with 60fps is a big deal,I just want peoples opinions.Hve Sony and co lied?

I will say both companies went a bit overboard on the promises of HD. But they're still better than SD or ED. I just don't care enough about resolution to let it bother me much, I'm certainly not going to go back to PC gaming because of a few lost pixels.

hmm, good question. while i dont think they intended that comment about 1080p at 120fps to generalized towards all games on the ps3, they might of meant " it's possible" for a game to achieve that if they wanted. However my opinion on this matter is that 1080p at 120fps is just to high for current gen consoles right now, and i dont think we even need it. Games like bioshock, gow, uncharted all already look amazing without it.

Totally agree with you.Playing on my friends 360 compared to on my PC there isn't really a HUGE amount of difference in most games,I mean you notice its a bit crisper and sharper on the PC but nothing earth-shattering IMO.

Play Gears on 360 and Gears on PC. You will be stunned at the difference.Wait what settings are you normally playing at?

stop looking at spec and start looking at the actual games. uncharted is the most beautiful console game on the market with great art design, stunning color pallet, and all around detail

1) 720p is still a high def resolution.

2) Nobody promised that all the games would run at 1080p.

3) There are games for both systems that run at 1080p natively.

4) You're Ken "quote" is wrong. He claimed that the PS3 supported 2 1080p displays at 120 Hz, but this doesn't mean just games, or that any games would necessarily take advantage of this. This was also before the second HDMI port was removed, thus eliminating the second screen option.

I played GEOW maxed at 1400x900,and yes it did look considerably better than its 360 counterpart ,but as I said nothing earth shattering imo and probably nothing the majority of gamers are going to care about tbh ,or do people really care that much about them extra pixels?

I always play PC games on max settings, and i don't see a huge difference.

I mean sure there is a difference, but not as big as some people pretend.

Id rather see devs using the consoles resources to make more detailed textures, better lightning, more polygons etc than make the games in 1080p.

I don't care about em. Shooting for such high res is killing the framerate in alot of console games, I'd wish they would just forget it.

I'm not bashing just want to get peoples views, but you can't honestly tell me that Sony,in particular, weren't hyping everybody up before release that 1080p and god knows how many fps were possible, and maybe it still is?

Heres a little snippet of Ken,pre PS3 release.

Agreed, a high res is desirable, but as you said I would like to see devs focus on stuff like avanced ai,physics, lighting and texures etc.

Kenny was hyping his console just like the pre PS2 era
and as much as I love high frame rate I'd rather have stuff like shadows/lightning xAA

I've yet to see 1080p comparisson to 720p so can't comment on that

Of course companies are going to talk about the upper limits of their new technology. Do you question car companies when you don't get the same acceleration as their 0-60 time every time you accelerate? Don't you think it would be a poor decision for a developer to make a game support a refresh rate that hardly anyone has a display for? Did you expect to have everything overnight?

It's not like resolution and refresh rate were the only things these companies talked about either. When 1080p or 120Hz was mentioned, it was at most, twice a conference. There was a plethora of other information on networking, physics, rendering, lighting as well as upcoming game titles. Why is it only these 2 things you are focusing on?

Don't get me wrong; I definitely prefer playing things (games or movies) in 1080p on my TV, but I'm more than happy with 720p upscaled as long as the game runs well and looks good. A lot of the best looking games this gen won't be featuring resolutions higher than 720p, and I think that's fine.

After all, would you rather your games ran smooth as butter at 720, or took a framerate hitch or two (or worse) at 1080? The PS3 and 360 weren't made to hande 1080p resolutions clear across the board, and the evidence is in every game that comes out below that target.

Exactly. To be honest, i'd say running in native 720p pushes it in some cases. COD4 could have run in native 720p, but the performance would take a hit. Running in 640p and scaling up, then adding anti-aliasing was simply the better thing to do. I doubt Infinity Ward could have hit their 60FPS target - on PS3 at least where they had less development knowhow - if they'd opted for native 720p. And had EA not run The Orange Box on PS3 in native 720p, the framerate wouldn't have chugged quite so bad.
