I have tons of times. I check the Metascore on every game I buy, and sometimes it sways my decision on whether or not to buy a game and/or console for said games.

A few examples pulled from this generation would be my decision to not buy Haze, decision to buy a Wii because of Super Mario Galaxy reviews, and quite a few others. Overall, I find reviews to be an extremely useful tool when helping me decide on which games and/or consoles I should buy, and I end up being happy with my purchases 99% of the time, whereas I would end up buying a lot of games I didn't like and would regret buying if I didn't have access to reviews.

Only Brink, literally. More because they said the game "was" broken and such, not because it sucked. Also, I'd still like to buy it, but when it's cheap.

So far, Epic Mickey. Not necessarily the scores, but more because of the critics in the review. Apparently the gameplay is a bit unimaginative. And camera problems. And when I want to be sure about some purchase, I usually ask people I know on the forum.

I purchased Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing because of reviews. As bad as it was, that made it awesome.

I purchased the Prince of Persia 2008 reboot based off of the early scores coming in (namely IGN). After learning that lesson, I now just read reviews for fun.

I should add I never would have purchased Oblivion without the extremely high Metacritic score. I wasn't an RPG fan and yet playing Oblivion hooked me. And now Bethesda is one of my favorite developers.

Not really. If I'm unsure about a game, I'll doextensive research (read what's good and bad about a game) from multiple sources. (Reveiwers and users.) I usually focus on the negative reveiws, actually, that way I'll know what's wrong with a game. However, if I'm interested in a game, I will almost always buy it, unless most reveiws are overwhelmingly negative. And even then I may not let it affect me. (I bought Force Unleashed on Wii, and had an absolute blast with it.)

I don't remember why I bought that game, but I stopped it half way. I want to play it again, but I forgot where I am in the story, and I don't wanna start again because I don't want to play that "draw-circles-in-quick-time-events" thing which took me probably around 2 hours. That is actually the only thing I remember in that game. God that was horrible.

A lot of the time. Usually, games that I don't highly, highly, HIGHLY anticipate (did I stress highly?) are buys despite reviews. These are only a few. Like right now, it's Battlefield 3. In the past, it has been MGS4, Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, etc. I try to preorder or reserve these. If one day, I get a good job, I might even go limited edition or something lol. But others, usually stuff like sports games + other annual iterations, as well as games that are sort of "wait and see", I hold off on those for reviews. Sometimes if reviews are mid-ranged like around a metascore of 70, I'd wait to buy these used.

I don't go by review scores but yes I have skipped on buying a game because of the general tone of them. If 10 or 15 reviews out of 20 all say the game is buggy, broken and unfinished I will be skipping that title. Most reviews are just someone slamming what they don't like (i.e an FPS player reviewing an RTS) or praising what they do like (an RPG player playing an RPG) so its hard to really use them on score alone.

Yes, Puzzle Quest Galactrix is a bug fest, so I'm staying away from that one even though it would go nice with the other two in my collection. Even without a review, I could tell Lunar Dragon Song was horrible, so I decided to stay away from it. Doesn't have the spirit of the original series and looks butt ugly.

I mostly read to find out what performance problems or game-breaking bugs the game might have. Otherwise, I make my own decision based on gameplay videos. Just don't want choppy, crappy, and/or slow framerates (a real serious problem this gen). That's mainly all I look for in a review. The game needs to play well. No choppy, hacked-together bugfest games please.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough money for every game I want, nor do I have the time. So, I read the reviews to see what the game has to offer.

Sure, take the Wii remake of Goldeneye for example. I was hyped beyond belief for it. I preordered the version that came with the gold controller. As the day of release approached I panicked and searched all over the internet for leaked reviews. I couldn't find any so I panicked more. The day it released I was at school. I googled reviews for it that morning and the only one up was from IGN. They gave it a 9. I was overjoyed and went and picked it up after school. Did it deserve a 9? No. Did it deserve a 6? No. More like an 8. Do I regret purchasing it, only slightly. I enjoy the single player much more than Black ops, and i've made good use of the controller playing Black ops.

By score I mean the review. Obviously a good game will get a good score and a bad game will get a bad score. You guys try way too hard to discredit people.

looking at scores to decide on the purchase? I don't think that's a really good idea....

No. You're missing the point, Funso, so let me try to explain. Too much emphasis is put on just scores. That's not using your head. Complex opinions cannot be accurately conveyed numerically. The score is only PART of a review, a summary if we really must put a lot of weight in it, but still not the whole of the review. Next, a review is an opinion by a single human being. Remember that tastes vary although, and this is key, a reviewer's job is to be as little biased as humanly possible (because no one can be unbiased); most fans tend to be a bit more biased and that's not terrible or anything but it doesn't help recommending games to undecided consumers. Third, a review should not be taken as "word of god". They are not grand decrees written in stone forcing you to accept them. It's disturbing how serious people take reviews. They're only an opinion whose purpose is to help undecided. If you have already made up your mind on a game, you do not need a review. Reviews and critics are not for you. You've already made a clear and conscious decision whether or not to buy something so there's no point seeking an outside opinion. A review is for someone who is on the fence and would like an outside opinion that isn't necessarily as biased as a diehard fan might be. When I look at a review, I look at the score and either read the review or watch it or glance over one or the other (or all of the above). Then I look at the fan score and then I look at the aggregate score. This is only when I'm on the fence regarding a game. And that's no guarantee that I'll agree. Regardless, but it's a useful tool to help make a decision. You are, in a sense, looking at a bigger picture.

I don't think you understand what I said, what I meant is that scores shouldn't be trusted and if you are using reviews, you should read the reviews, not the scores. And I don't trust aggregate scores either. Scores are already a flawed way of judging a game in the individual standpoint, how should an aggregate score make it anymore accurate to the actual enjoyment I would get from the game.

Invisible Wars, it was graded 8.0 while Deus Ex was graded 8.2. So naturally I thought it'd be pretty much the same game.

From this gen, I purchased NieR based on the reviews from GameCritics - I trust these guys the most. Three writers from this site praised the game, and it was only $30 at that time, so why not I thought. It's a good game, imo, but not as amazing as they put it. Don't regret purchasing it though.

Anyways, I normally just rent games that interest me before deciding on buying them or not; however, I won't bother renting those with less than a 60 on Metacritic. I mostly buy games from series that I love or when there's a good deal going on.

Yes. Maybe once a year I'll scour around amazon and buy like $50 worth of games that are $10-$20. Reviews are pretty much all I have to go on then. I try to find reviewers who feel the same way I feel about games though.
